It was a good weekend for Motor City sports:  Tigers go up 2 games to none in the ALCS against the dreaded Yankees (even with the Valverde melt down in Game 1).  Lions come from behind to defeat the dreaded Eagles in Philly in OT.  The Lions still look sloppy and played some undisciplined football yesterday but a win is a win.

But the Yankees make money even with that payroll.  There are obviously a lot of factors that come into play on why the Yankees franchise is profitable, but the bottom line is that they pay their players more because they can.  If you look at it strictly from a business perspective, isn't your value tied to the profitability of the organization?  And following with that theme, Jeter was a huge part of the Yankees resurgence in the mid-'90's, so they should be paying him more than what might be considered his fair market value.  He sells tickets.  He sells merchandise.  He wins.  

the difference is what a team can do with LESS eg. oakland A's coming in to post season were only 1 win short of the yankees and having the best record in the AL. 

in this case, the yankees are overrated and everyone on their team is pretty much overpaid...by a lot

While there is nothing wrong with that, any team that could draw in high profile players and afford them would do the exact same thing, there's also no denying that they do 'buy' or attempt to 'buy' titles. Again nothing wrong with it, but it's hard to argue that they don't do it.

As is the case in any sport, people will always dislike and envy the top teams. It's nothing new and it isn't going to change.

Also it's all relative, sure they did a lot of their winning before having huge amounts of money, but it's not like any of the other teams had huge amounts of money either.

yeah, no one really likes a consistently performing team...or well, an overpaid consistently performing team...they've shown time and again that they could basically almost buy games ;D

They might have little offensive presence in the paint, but they have one of the best defensive big men in Perkins, and Ibaka isn't a slouch either.

I agree about the Ravens. I also think the Bears will do well this year. Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall reunited along with forte in the backfield is a pretty potent offense, and their defense is solid as well. As much as I can't stand Cutler, I see them getting pretty far this year, not sure about super bowl, but they are definitely making strides. 

My Super Bowl picks would have to be Patriots or Texans vs Packers or 49ers. If I had to pick just 2 I'd go with the Texans and 49ers

The thing is, the badminton players were doing in the round robin rounds (like regular season), not elimination rounds (like the playoffs). So, they're doing the same thing that the NFL or NBA teams do, resting/tanking in order to have better success in the elimination rounds. Japan's women's soccer team did the same so they wouldn't have to fly 300 miles for the next match so they can be better rested. I blame the system that they put in that would give an advantage to losing teams. The players are just doing what would give them the best chance of winning within that system. And winning Gold is what the Olympics are about, that sportsmanship thing is just propaganda.

Having said that, the grandstanding by the NCAA is nauseating.  Like the NCAA itself isn't completely corrupt.

 

The money could have gone to lowering costs of tuition, improving school facilities, paying more employees to serve the students better, etc. At a time where many colleges are raising tuition and cutting programs, any money that the school loses will directly impact the students.

Played the seeding games of a coed 2-pitch tourney today. Went 1-2, which isn't too bad, considering we were a meld of three teams - none of whom have played together before. Played a sloppy first game cuz no one knew where anyone else was gonna be. Second game was a big win against one of the more dominant teams in our city league schedule. Third game was super close. Woulda figured the fist fight in the 3rd inning between members of the opposing team would have disqualified them, but no. One of the kids got taken off by the cops.. then brought back by the cops later to compete in the HR derby... wtf lol

Also... we got our asses handed to us this morning which ended our day. had somewhere around 10-15 errors (6 of them as fielding/throwing errors to/from third base). rough. Watched the rest fo the games which were pretty entertaining. The group that fought yesterday got the sportsmanship trophy today. dumb, but whatever.

 

in 2 weeks...starts 7/27..ends 8/12.

at halftime KD had 21 and the Dominican had 27

 

9 dogs, 9 beers, in 9 innings of baseball.  We did it a few years back on dollar dog night at a ballgame.  Seemed like a fun idea at the time, but those dogs really get tough to eat after about six.
