Ok, hopefully this will clear this up, as we seem tohave a few threads a month lately on this topic and it seems that it'snever quite understood.

Here is the breakdown for levels:
POINTS      LEVEL                BENEFIT
200           Ski Bum                additional 10% off anything & Free Sierra Snowboard brand Tshirt
1,500        Local                    additional 15% off anything & Free Goggle (up to $100 value)
3,000        Instructor             additional 18% off anything & Free Binding (up to $200 value)
10,000      Board Member      additional 20% anything & Free Snowboard (up to $400 value)

These are the ways to earn points:
- Daily Log in (one per day)
- Legitimate* Reviews (3 points per review, capped at 3 reviews per day)
- Legitimate** Posts (1 point per post capped at 5 posts per day)
- Purchase Points (1 point per $10 spent with no cap)

*By'legitimate' we mean that it needs to be worth of your five pointgain. We are looking for reviews that will help future customers getan understanding of personal experiences with this product. Pleasemake sure that you list details that are essential for those looking tobuy.
In terms of post points, please put in an effort to become anintegral part of the community. One word posts and posts with prettymuch zero relevance to the topic at hand are not generally worthy.

Ifyour review is 'flagged' by five members, or one staff or expertmember, it is deleted and your points are deducted from your pointtotal. If you have ten reviews flagged and deleted, you will no longer receive points for reviews from that point forward.

**For legit posts, we're looking for posts that actually add to the conversation or content at hand in the thread you're posting in. If you're only posting in a game thread (ie. This or That) your posts will be flagged as well. Please do your part in becoming a useful part of the community and you won't run the risk of having a problem with this.
Once you've had 30 of your posts flagged, you will no longer be able to post in the forums, so please post with content in mind.

On another topic of points, here's some info on the Points for Purchase topic:
- Points for purchases has been working again since the 18th of March.
- Nighthawk will be adding them to the recent points list on your profile as it has been previously not shown.
-Points for purchases prior to the 18th that were not awarded will beretroactively added soon (we do not know an exact date on this yet).

The points were implemented and worked for quite some time, but stopped working when we relaunched the site on October 12, 2009.    Previousto that, the points worked from when we first implemented that aspect of points until thatdate, so there won't be any other points added prior to then.

So,just to be clear. Anyone who made purchases between October 12, 2009and March 18, 2010 will have the points added to their account that thepurchases were made on when the programmers get the chance to work onit.

The Member Points system is in place to REWARD members who are active, participate in the site, and contribute to the community. Its not just suppose to be a way for people to get free stuff. More often than not if you try to cheat the system people will notice, pretty much everything is transparent on the forum. I would recommend you take a look at some of your reviews, the reviews are meant to help customers make an educated purchase NOT just a means of getting points.

Daily login, good and reliable reviews on products, purchasing products, and relevant comments on the forums all accumulate points. Avoid posting single word responses that aren't relevant to the topic because it'll probably end up as spam. :D

anyways, to get points, you can just simply log in everday, you get 2 points.. posting in the forum will get you points and doing reviews will give you points. making purchases will also get you points.
click on your name in top right corner to get into your profile then click on your level to see your points breakdown.

Ive noticed this on my computer as well... it just takes a minute. A couple times Ive even gotten an error msg, but when I go back and click on the forums, it has posted. So I would just say let it go and eventually it should post.

yea theoretically the little box is there to check that you are getting it or want it, but what makes a good review is actual information about a product. Its one thing if you demo'd the board or bindings, and then checked the "i want it/gonna buy it" box, but its another thing to just look at it online, or in the store and then write a review about it. This is basically writing a shitty review, because you have no personal experience with the product.
SOOOOO if you wrote a bunch of reviews about things that you wanted, but had no experience, then yea sure, I bet they were flagged as spam.

For the future, please only write reviews about products that you have used and have personal experience with.

I was thinking about getting a board and i noticed that you can write a review about wanting something and in the review i made it fairly clear that i was going to purchase the product and adjust the review after i used it a bit. but its just getting bad reviews...what can i do about that?

Unfortunately there has never been retroactive points awarded when you weren't signed into an account. I mean, you could associate a paytype, or address to it, but that would be a lot of work to make it easier for people to get discounts.

Honestly I don't mind not getting points for logging in. If I get points that's cool, I guess more incentive for hanging out talking to people, but shouldn't that be the idea in the first place?? Instead of it being 5 points max for 5 thread posts, why not like every 3 posts you get 1 point? That way you have to keep up a conversation on a thread to continue getting points. I know I don't have a lot of posts, but I can't spend my whole day on the site, I wish I could haha but between school and work it's nice to unwind to. Like hey I'm home for the daily giveaway I'll give it a go and hit up the chatroom, but really I see the same people type in the chatroom everyday and it kind of sucks that theres what, 500-1000 people and maybe 40 or 50 actually talk? I wish more people would post on my meet up to drive to Mt. High or my question about boards. I don't mind music posts and stuff, gotta start fresh sometimes, but yeah there are a lot of pointless ones.

The reviews section is full to bursting point of utter dross. There are about 100 reviews TOPS i would trust in there to be from people not trying to 'trick' the flaggers that their review is of any substance or worth. The only reason its not cleaned up is simply because there arent enough hours in the day to even make a dent in it since the staff went on exodus.

It doesnt also help as well that you can't flag crap easily. You can't just click on a user look through his inane crayola dribblings and flag his reviews. No no! you have to find what he reviewed, go to the review then find his review in amongst all the other detritus and then flag it, then wait for the page to reload, then go back to his or her member profile and do it all again.

Someone needs to code something where not only can we say this review stinks, but also where we can immediately flag it when it crops up in the summary listing.

Honestly, its hard to say this, but the worst thing about this community right now, is well, this community. I mean even when we tell people we are sick to death of point whoring jerks, they swim in like zombie goldfish "did someone say something about points? How can i get more points? I wish i had more points?"

The experiment failed. I'm sure everyone on this site is nice and decent. but dangle something in their face (for contributing to the community), and they turn into a jackass.

Did you miss the point about contributing?

"hey! if i order something and then return it, will i get more points?"

"if you make 3 reviews a day you can earn points!"

"i wish i had more points!"

YOU IDIOTS ARE MISSING THE POINT!!!

Theres been a few threads on this. I dont think you can buy any shirt anymore, you could for a time being but not now. Keep the coupon and when they restock the shirts you can pm your code to a staff member to get them to extend the expiry date.

There are heaps of threads on reviews. Basically, if you review a scraper or a bandana, you have a good chance of it being flagged as spam. The key rule is to write an informative review, that someone can use to make an informed decision.

Comparisons are great, I've got a Signal Omni (currently) and a Sierra Crew (coming), so once I have both I'll write up about the differences.

Don't review saying "the colours are great", instead you could say "the colours are lighter/darker than the photos", etc.

If it takes you 2 mins to write a review, you may wish to rethink.

It took me ages to find out how the points work though... I think there should be a link to this info on the website somewhere (maybe on the daily giveaway page).
Or maybe (and more likely) there is already one and I just couldn't find it because it was just too dam obvious.

You need to get in contact with a Sierra Staff Member explaining your situation. Only a staff member could lift up the exemption for you. If you understand why your reviews were flagged, then I don't see why they won't give you a second chance. There are few threads floating around the forums that talk about what are good reviews. I say you should read up on them and get in contact with a staff member and hopefully they will reinstate it for you.

once you're there, the discount applies to all your future purchases. You'll see the price of the item and then the discounted price for you.

OK, so you are saying its good business practice to have an expiration date? It makes no sense to have one, other than making a person pay to ship just a shirt, and Sierra employees to work to ship just a shirt. Look, having an expiration date forces the recipient to use it, if they choose to do so. Forcing the recipient to use it might make some of them go buy more stuff to be eligible for free shipping (since people don't seems to like to pay shipping). If people buy more stuff from Sierra, it will compensate the loss in revenue of the t-shirt or other free stuff they give out. Also you need to consider that business makes money when people buy things they want and not what they need. the free coupon gives more of an incentive for the recipient to buy more stuff they want, thus creating a revenue stream for Sierra. I am not saying this is Sierra's business model or anything of that matter, but personally I think it makes perfect sense from a business stand point to have an expiration date for a free gift. If they don't have an expiration on coupons, they will lose a lot more money, since there probably are people who don't use it. Even though Sierra is community oriented, they are still in the business in making money, not losing it.

Concerning being green, there is a responsibility from the consumer and the seller. I think Sierra does its best job to be green. If the consumer wants to use the free t-shirt coupon just to get that t-shirt, then the responsibility will lie on the consumer, not the seller. As another member states it:

I agree here... I got my free t-shirt coupon from forum posting right after i'd spent a G buying all new snowboarding gear; no money to pay to ship a t-shirt right now. I'm effectively getting penalized for bad timing on my 200.

Hey Nicki,

You have to make sure you are logged in when you make purchases. If you are not logged in, you will not receive points. I can confirm that I have received points for purchases after March 18. The points will show up on your total points tally, but not in your "recent points" box. See below.

Ok I've read through this forum and I don't want to spam but I am still wondering about one thing.

Can anyone who has purchased stuff AFTER March 18 verify that they've gotten points for it? I haven't gotten points for any of my multiple purchases after March 18 (and obviously not for those before then either).

yeah too much spam even though l'm a new joiner myself.

l personally wont be making a purchase till next yr at least so l'll probably forfeit the free t shirt cuz I'm from Canada which equates to like $40 additional charges.

There's not much you can do about spam post. That's just the way the system works.
My opinion: I think Sierra did a good job with the system. Seriously, do you think someone is going to post everyday until they get like thousands of points? They'll probably just stop. Unfortunately you get new members who will probably spam but again there's nothing you can do.

I don't think the system needs any changing.

I am not for changing the point levels. If Sierra really wanted to get rid of spam, they need to get a better forum search function and maybe penalized people who do re-post of the same topic. Maybe more than 1 per month the member would lose a point every topic they re-post. But I feel like this goes away from main topic.

In light of the increase of spam and pointless threads/reviews by new members, I'd like to see the Ski Bum threshold increase from 200 to maybe 500points. It may well discourage those who are here to do a quick hit and run just for the 10% discount.

Well if you were expecting to see purchases show up on weekly points in your member page, then it won't (according to Sierra it is to protect your privacy).

I love how the majority of complaints are about how it's too hard to get points, that you should get more points for purchases and that people haven't received their points from previous purchases. First off, Sierra is doing this for your benefit. Anything that you get from this site on top of the great deals is a gift, and people should be grateful. They have no obligation to give you back anything for buying here and hanging out, or making reviews, but they do, so stop whining about how tough it is and how much a pain it will be to get that next discount. Second, don't complain when you write 5 word reviews, or make useless threads about nothing, and they get locked or flagged. The idea of the points is to generate content that is useful and enjoyable for the rest of the community, not hussy for points. Don't be surprised when you lose points if you did nothing to get them.

The member point system isn't perfect and as of right now there are things people are unhappy about (expiring coupons, not getting credit for old purchases without logging in as a few things). But the thing is the point system is an on going project. I am not sure if it finalized since it has been changed (as in rewards) a few times in a month. yeah there are probably a lot ofpeople going to get the short end of the stick, but it could a lot worse as in no point system. Personally I appreciate this reward bases system, even with its flaws because where else am I going to find place with 70% off and get an extra discount on top of that?

I understand that this whole points reward system is basically a gift. So I'm not trying to be a kook about it. It's just a bummer. Seems like customer service could maybe take it on a case by case basis. It totally sucks that you missed out on purchase points. Whoever is updating the website has now places a prominent feature telling people to sign up for memberships and reap the benefits. I've looked through this whole forum on the "how to earn points" topic and the retroactive purchases question seems to have been answered to where I understand what the deal is. That was part of my question but not all of it. I saw one post close to addressing the other part of my question, which mentioned the poster being bummed they bought as a guest. I would like to know what's up with purchases made before discovering the whole member point system. It would seem only fair that if a purchase was made, then the customer found out about the member point system that they would not be "punished" for not knowing. I mean they still bought something. If it is easy and obvious (same name, address, etc) that they are the same person as a now member who made the purchase before they became a member, the proper thing to do would be to reward the points for the purchase, same as anyone else. RIGHT?

You could probably ask a staff to look into it, but from my understanding points from purchases doesn't show up on your weekly points. Too bad there isn't a way to look at all the points you accumulated.

Yeah the expiration date on the freebies is bit of a bummer (can't complain about a freebie though). I still have Goggles and Bindings voucher to use up and nothing appeals to me in stock :(

Your post idea does promote a better community, but there are few problems with it. The biggest problem is the fact there are hundreds of post here everyday. It would be impossible/or at least very hard for an expert members to validate every posts. That is why you have members to do it, but if you just get friends to approve your posts then that would defeat the purpose.

Overall I do like the idea, but I doubt it would get implemented because there might be some forum issues. Also they have so much other problems with the forums and upgrading the site, it would take a while if they implement something like that.

I like to take the glass half-full approach of thinking that SS values community involvement so much that they're willing to give $60 worth of points per day for being an active forum member.

Rather than changing that, it might be good to find ways to award points based on promoting SS, or encouraging quality posts versus just five posts. Perhaps something like post votes or karma, with 3 points being given if a post is rated helpful by 5 members, or one expert member.

Just a heads up for Sierra Staff, on the front page you changed the main banner to reflect the new 10% - 20% discounts only but down the bottom on the right there is a square image which says "reward yourself" and still has listed 10% - 30% discounts.

True, but percentage make it a whole new level. Also, Undecided's equation is addition, and his addition is correct. Too bad it just wasn't a simple addition problem.

FYI:
30% off 70% off = (100%-70%)*30%=9%; 9%+70%=79% off

but since max discount is now 20%, would you get a total of 76% off the total retail price.

Any discount is better than no discount.

Yeah I saw the update on Monday. Also Expert Members seems to also get free binding (which I believe it is an upgrade from a free snowboard). But you need to selected to be an expert, so I guess it doesn't really fall under earning points.

I believe the points system for purchases are still not online, or you might just need to wait a while. It was said that the points system for goods purchased are still being worked on because they wanted it to be retroactive, so its taking longer to implement.

5 points a day from posting is better than just 1 for logging in. as for reviews you have to write really good ones or else you will lose your points. i once had 200+ and the next day had 150.

^^ if you read the other posts, you'd know that its up to the programmers. There isn't even a guarantee that it'll be back, as of now we aren't getting points for purchases alone so stop worrying about past purchases for points

but also on the points note, it says on the 1st page that if you get 1500 points, you receive a 15% discount. But on the member points tab, it says we only get 10% for 1500 points. Can someone with real info shed some light on this?

Sierra's point system is pretty smart. You get people to contribute on the forums, and make them come on their website daily. Once you get discount, it would be hard for people to walk away and go to a different place to buy.

How do we get points taken away? When I wrote my first review I was in Japan and every time I tried to post it a page kept coming up saying that Sierra had crashed. I assumed it was the crappy Japanese connection so I kept trying to post it and then I checked the next day and it posted like 12 times! I've been writing things down for threads on my whiteboard that I want to say but not waste them if I am already over my 5 post limit for the day. That way I can save them up so one day if I need a few more posts before bed I can just go to the whiteboard and bam I can hit my 5 posts per day limit.

Yah i don't think implementing this point system is a huge priority on the list of things to do. There have been talks of revamping the system for quite sometime now

Although I love watching the reviews and points disappear when they get deleted, fake reviews just waste your time and make you look like a n00b, so don't make fake reviews. By all means, buy lots of stuff to increase your points and go over the cap.

haha i just found the members tab. maybe they just put it up there. For those of you that don't know its 1 point/post (max 5 posts/day), 3 point/review (limit 3 reviews/day) and 1 point per log in (1/day)= 15 in one day however most of those 15 point would be from reviews. If you aren't going to demos every other day, you are just making up BS reviews if you can put up 3/day haha.

Ok, hopefully this will clear this up, as we seem to have a few threads a month lately on this topic and it seems that it's never quite understood.

Here is the breakdown for levels:
POINTS      LEVEL                BENEFIT
200           Ski Bum                additional 10% off anything & Free Sierra Snowboard brand Tshirt
1,500        Local                    additional 15% off anything & Free Goggle (up to $100 value)
3,000        Instructor             additional 15% off sale /20% off MSRP & Free Binding (up to $200 value)
10,000      Board Member      additional 15% off sale / 30% off MSRP & Free Snowboard (up to $400 value)

These are the ways to earn points:
- Daily Log in (one per day)
- Legitimate* reviews (5 points per review, capped at 3 reviews per day)
- Legitimate Posts (1 point per post capped at 5 posts per day)
- Purchase Points (1 point per $10 spent with no cap)

*By 'legitimate' we mean that it needs to be worth of your five point gain. We are looking for reviews that will help future customers get an understanding of personal experiences with this product. Please make sure that you list details that are essential for those looking to buy.
In terms of post points, please put in an effort to become an integral part of the community. One word posts and posts with pretty much zero relevance to the topic at hand are not generally worthy.

If your review is 'flagged' by five members, or one staff or expert member, it is deleted and your points are deducted from your point total.

I'd also like to know. I have earned over 200 pts and its not all from reviews and logins. I have read the other points posts, but none of them seem to elaborate. It appears you used to get points for posting (then on 30 per day) and for buying items but that doesnt seem true anymore.

I've also read there was some abuse in the past and a new system may becoming soon; can anyone comment on that?

Is there a way to view all of your points or just the previous 5 ?
