Glad you had a good time... again i'm sorry for forgetting to text you when I was there on Tuesday.

I am also hoping these next two systems can pull together some good totals... I'm trying to get back up there for a 3dayer this weekend.

Yeah man, after tuesday things really got better. Thursday and Friday were perfect groomie days, could really lay an edge in.

Rode on 2/16 and 2/17...

What a difference a few days make. Snow was good, firm and edge-able. Super fast and fun. Being a holiday weekend, it was necessary to get in early and get as much of the goods as you could before the crowds arrived.

Fav runs of the weekend were Cruise Control (as usual, that run always seems to be good), Superstar Headwall and middle, then bailout to Skylark... (I recorded a 71.6mph top speed on Skylark mid day Saturday... needless to say it was fast). East to East... again super fast, smooth and edge-able.

After riding we enjoyed a few beers by the fire pit near the umbrella bars.... great times, great weekend.

Snow on the way mid week, and rumors of more this weekend. Get it while the getting is good.

just went up for the storm from friday to sat. the mountain was awesome. i was surprised i was able to get into the trees. there was some low coverage in some spots but enough to get in there. the stash was in full effect. dropped the pillow in the tree runs to a washed out landing. i thought i was first to hit it unless someone went under it and pushed the whole landing out trying to heel stop down the chute. dream maker is in full effect as well. the rail garden is pretty gnarly and the jumpline was pumping. im surprised i was able to hit em with the pow. going back up this weekend cause i got the itch. see you there!

Nobody on the mountain... no body in the lodges. Why is it that I don't do more midweek riding? Oh yea.... work.

Even with the small crowds, i hate to say it, but the conditions were garbage. Almost every run was hardpack ice, with little to no loose stuff on the sides. Even the trees were trashed. Snow was in the forecast (hence the trip) but managed to never change from rain to snow.

ROTD was Cruise control in the Needles eye area. Not sure if it's due to the fact that it faces more west than north, but it had decent snow.... was fast and fun.

If you're going up and you can push it off... i would.... they need some significant snowfall to recover from this mess.

well, i must say i ride the new hampshire side of the mountains and the december riding has been awesome for the time of year... i had to take january off but i imagine everyone is cranking the snow out in this cold snap and were expecting a dump on saturday! im super stoked to get out again next week! hopefully i can bug out after class a few days.

I bet the quality of that man made is top notch too. The weather has been perfect the past few days for crankin out quality MM.

I haven't been around much with "life" going on... but I have had a chance to make a few trips up to K this season.

Anyone else been up much?

So far it's been one of the better starts to the season that we've seen in a long while... Good coverage, and already a few pow days under my belt. The trees off North Star (low rider and patsy's) have been stellar..... even had a chance to beat up some thigh deep pow the day before New Years Eve.

Although I've put half the days on that I had at this point last year, the days that i have gotten have been beyond awesome. They ahve a pretty serious cold snap going right now, so expect them to be cranking the man made white as hard as they possibly can.

Kudos to the new CEO for making good on his promise to make snow as much and as often as possible. Pass holders are def seeing a difference.... Keep it up!

Agreed! I feel any snowboarding is better then none at all!
Before my son I would ride my local mountain until they closed. There would be mud/grass gaps, rocks to ollie over, and lots of bumps everywhere.

IDK if they'll be opening again for a bit. It has been pretty warm here this week. I got to go last Saturday afternoon. It was a beautiful bluebird day. It was all bumped up by the time I got up there, but it was still super fun. Nice and soft, plenty of coverage on the trail they did have open (Rime). Plus, it wasn't crowded at all.
I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of Killington and their ways in the past, but this was super awesome of them to open it up to the passholders. Everyone in their operations did a great job.
On another note, anyone who complains about any riding in October should be banned from playing snowboardz.

From what I know they haven't announced a full open date. Typically it would be in the next few weeks, but only restricted mtn usage will be available. Be ready for the "stairway to heaven" if you plan to ride as soon as it opens.

Few friends went up for the soft opening last weekend. Conditions were bumpy and thin... but still came with positive reports.

Think snow...

Yes, i did hear that HGVC was planning on opening a resort at Whistler. Last i checked it was only open to members who's "home" share was actually at the resort. But i'm sure that's changed by now, and if not, it will in the very near future.

The wedding has run it's total up very close to the mark you just mentioned. IF you don't count any of the money that was spent on or during the honeymoon. We've had some small donations from family, but nothing to speak of. We're tackling this ourselves financially, Hence no season pass, or dedicated ski house rental this year.

It's probably just the optimist in me, but I have high hopes for next season. There can't be two shit seasons back to back. And if you track the snow history for the area, there usually is a bad ass season following every shit season so far on record.

I sure do hope you're right on that one......

Yeah, sad, sad season for sure. If you go to the killy website, and look at all the web cams it looks pretty dismal. 1/2 pipe has huge mud spots in the center, brown snow all over the place, anything that doesn't get much sun looks like an ice sheet that is bumped up...looks pretty bad over there.
They did lower the price of an adult ticket to 59. Still pretty high if you ask me if k1 is shut down and they only have 23 runs.

Just based on the 10 day for there, I would expect them to shut the doors pretty soon. A far cry from the june superstar days of years past. What a crazy ass year...just crazy.

Your not kidding... dismal is the only word for how fast it's melting away. K canceled Snowmont and moved pond skimming to the first weekend in April... at this rate I question if they'll even make it that long. They've dropped over 100 trails in less than a week..... Granted what is open they made a ton of snow on, but even still..... with temps pushing mid 70s even that base wont last long.

On a side note... i'm getting married this summer, so we're not sure if we're going to bother to spring for our passes next year. This year wasnt all that convincing.... I still have the house, and will prob do my best to keep conditions posted on here, but my day count will be far less than it was the last few years.

According to a FB announcement this morning they dropped a ton of snow over night and are down to about 23 or so trails. No more K1 Gondi or snowdon triple....

If you are going up be prepared for moguls/bumps everywhere and an ugly mess of slushy snow.

it's been a dismal season for sure.... good snow falling now... and while I was away. I think Ma Nature is trying to tell me something.

Speaking of luck.... i was in Co for 7 days... it snowed for 5 of them. Rode pow stashes in Vail that were waist deep.... breck was knee deep all day in the woods.... Cover was thin under the pow, and you can tell by looking at the bases of the decks i brought.... The new NUG took a shot down to the core when i busted up my tailbone.

I've seen your bud on the mtn... he does rip it pretty hard. Not sure i want to break that ice tho, as he seems like he would be more than i would want to handle after a day of shredding

Bahah...that's pretty funny. Next time you see him you should walk up to him and go "Jarrod, Westa says hi" Super nice guy, gets a little crazy, and can ride like a bat out of hell.

We did have a good time, despite some of the worst conditions I have ever rode. It's real frustrating to see the past, and future storms rolling through there only a week after I left. Timing is a bitch, eh?

^^^Yeah, right! This looks like a weekend you should be driving north based on the forecast. Probably going to stick to the notch over the weekend but might be headed further north on Monday if you can swing a day off...hopefully, there will be plenty of leftovers if this storm actually produces.

Trip Report for Feb.10-Feb.18:

Friday, Feb.10: Left Columbus to drive to Buffalo. Decided to break up the drive and stay with the in-laws Friday night, then to VT. Saturday. Hit a little lake effect on the way. Nothing major, nothing exciting, but wanted to put this into the TR as I came across something kind of disturbing at a rest stop just before the PA/OH boarder. Walked in, took a piss, went to the sink to wash my hands and found this sitting on the sink. I have never left a rest stop so fast in my life...

Got to Buffalo, had some beers with the in-laws, and went to bed way too late.

Saturday, Feb.11: Woke up at the ass crack of dawn, after about 4 hours of sleep, and found a few inches fell over night (close to 3 inches). I always say if I have to wake up before 7, there better be snow on the ground.

Hit the road around 8, and it was snowing and blowing pretty good for the first hour of the drive. On the 290 out of town a pickup with trailer merging in front of us jack knifed, almost took us out, slid into the berm, and somehow managed to save it and get back into the lane like a boss. Best save I have ever seen in my life, happened a few feet from us, and in the matter of seconds.

Somewhere along the way we all decided (minus the driver) that it would be a good idea to crack some beers, and eat some shitty food. Stopped at a Wendy's, got some nuggets, the wife stole the container, I improvised.

In the 4 years of going to Vermont, I have never seen it so dry. The drive has never been so brown, so depressing, so sad. One nice thing though was there was SOME snow on the ground in killington. Sure it was crusty, hard as hell, and dirty, but it's better than looking bare ground. Most of the drive looked like this...

Got into Killington around 3. We decided to come a day early so we could hang out with some friends up for the weekend from NYC. They are members of a time share just off the access road called "The Sugashack". Apparently it's been a decently popular party house since the 80's. Tradition lives on today..I assure you . The place is pretty big. 10 rooms, 25 beds, 4 baths, 2 living rooms, huge decks, and a massive bar area with a fully stocked bar, 2 keg-a-rators and a jagermeister machine. Oh did I mention a glow in the dark bubble machine? Hahah...side note, the hoodie I wore that night got totally thrashed by the glow in the dark bubble solution. We all went out to a place called "The Grist Mill" for dinner and drinks. I have been there before, and it's a pretty fancy place, but the bar side is pretty laid back, and you can get full food service on that side. If anyone goes, I totally recommend staying on the bar side. Had some decent calamari, and a lobster mac and cheese. On another side note...that stuff doesn't feel so great coming back up if you get hamma' drunk. Hahah..

Back to the shack for more drinks, and all around debotury. Our friend Jarrod and his girlfriend Holly decided they wanted to give me a bubble beard. They wouldn't take no for an answer.

We proceeded to drink the night, and morning away. I think my mother in-law had a few too many.

Sunday, Feb.12: I had big plans for today. Get up, eat some food, go ride and meet up with Shift4200. Unfortunately those plans fell through. It was a mix of a few different things. It was cold. Like...really, really cold. Windy as hell. Reports of massive amounts of ice. I was hungover, non of my group wanted to go out. I was still wanting to go meet up with shift, wanted to put a face to the person I had been talking to for almost a year. He took off early, it just all fell through. Shit happens. Maybe next time mate!

Went for a late brunch at a place called Wally's on the access road. I HIGHLY recommend going there for breakfast. Best eggs Benedict of my life. They make really good screwdrivers too. 100% fresh squeezed OJ topped with some vodka served in a tall glass. Dollar beers too. Great way to nurse off a hangover.

By now it was already 3:30, so we headed over to the hotel (Killington Grand) to see if we could check in. No go on that one, but we did have valid keys for the spa. Went to go sit in some outdoor hot tubs and pool for a while. It was so cold that the steam from the hot tub was freezing into our hair. Soaked around in the tubs till around 6, then checked into the rooms, unloaded gear and waxed some of my friends boards.

We went out to the Wobbly Barn for dinner. I love that place. Although...I am not too impressed that they raised their prices...again. Had a fillet, and King crab legs. Damn good. While the place is pretty damn expensive, I feel it is worth a trip there every year we go. Never been let down. The soup and salad bar is top notch. While it seems weird to rave about a salad bar, just trust me that it's worth it. Literally can get anything on a salad that you want. Had one of the weirdest dressings, a wasabi and cucumber dressing, but it was amazing. Nice and spicy, but a little sweet and just worked well. Wanted to go back for round two, but I had a feast on the way and didn't want to fill up. The wife got a 2 1/2 lbs lobster. Thing was done really well, and looked amazing.

Monday, Feb.13: Decided to sleep in and get a slightly later start to the day, to try and let the temps warm up and let the sun work a little magic on all the ice I had been hearing about. While it did warm up a little (got up to about 17 at the base, and 10 at the peak) it was a little dicey out there. They were blowing snow on a bunch of trails we wanted to ride, and I am not the biggest fan of riding under the guns. Rode for a few hours, but called it a day early, around 1:30 and went back to soak in the tubs and drink many a beer.
Sun poked out for a little bit...

Went to Casey's Caboose for dinner. Shift was telling me he has been let down lately with them, and have to agree slightly with that statement. Service was..okay, but the food was pretty damn good. Not "wow you" good, as it has been in the past for us, but still good. I got a crazy meal of ribeye, lump crab, lobster, some nicely done shrimp, and some amazing grilled asparagus.

Tuesday, Feb.14: Once again decided to make a late start (hit first lift around 11) to, once again wait for temps to rise, and it was a good choice. It was a good day. Groomers did a great job tilling up some of the ice, and the snow makers laid down a decent layer over the ice. Temps were in the mid teens, low 20's. Nothing real exciting to say about Tuesday, other than it was a fast, race everyone down the hill, hard lay down carve kind of day. For a shitty season of no snow, and almost 100% man made, it was about as good as it gets (well, other than Wednesday, but I'll get to that soon).

We decided to actually use the kitchen that comes with the penthouse and cooked up some chilli and Chicken Wing Dip. Stayed in for the night and just hungout, sat in the pool, baked out the sauna in our room. It was a Good night.

Wednesday, Feb.15: Snow makers were out in full force the night before, and conditions were pretty great. Flat light day though, and was having a hard time bombing trails and seeing definition of the slope. The wife, another member of our group, and I decided to lap the Timberline Park over on Ramshead. While it is a beginner park they had some nice features set up...and lets be honest, non of us are the strongest park riders. Getting to old and fat these days, so the nice 10-20 ft tables, and casual rails were perfect for us. They had 30 features in that park, including some nice down boxes, some street style kinks, a step up picnic table style box, and a decent 1/4 pipe. I was a little sad to see the 1/4 was a side hit, rather than a straight hit quarter. None the less it was fun. Icy walls though so you really had to be on your game as to not wash out. After a few laps I was feeling a little more confident (really was the first time back in a park since last season) and totally washed out on a rail, and fell HARD on my ass. The landing was pure ice...pretty much ended my day.

I am pretty bummed that the pictures we took with our decent point and shoot, never saved to the SD card. I guess that's what you get when you use a 5 year old camera that has seen about 10 canoe trips, many ski trips, and has had a few beers spilled on it. The wife and friend did get a few "decent" distant shots of me in the park. Nothing fancy though, and the one time I bombed the big table with a tweaked out method was shot with the point and shoot . The only really satisfying trick never got captured. Anyways, here were a few winners for the day.

Alley oop on the 1/4 had a brief indy on it, but as I said..shooting with an iphone from far away isn't the best way

Annnd the rail that helped cut my day short. I realized I'm too fat to land rails wrong hahaha. I also managed to grind down my heel edge pretty well too. There is now a 1/2 inch divot cleanly shaved into the edge. Looks to be a real easy fix though.

For food we went to a place called "The Garlic". More of an Italian fare, reasonably priced, good drinks. It was also pretty cool that they have a Tapas menu. Super cheap if you want to go that route and just have a few drinks. You could get away with only dropping 20 there, get a good buzz, and not be hungry when you walk out the door. It was my first time going there and will definitely go back. I would suggest any of the pasta dishes, and their white sauces are top notch.

Back at the hotel two friends drove in and met up with us just after dinner. Just hung out in the room all night. Around 10:30 we hear a knock, open the door, and a security guard is out there telling us he has complaints about us being loud, and that we need to knock it off and be more quiet. Really got a rude feeling from the guy, and I can honestly say I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but he just came off as an ass. Really, we weren't being that loud. Sure we had a little music going, but it was being played on one of those ipod dock stations (a cheap on at that), and not turned up, and we were having a good time...but not yelling. The room is huge as we stayed in the penthouse. The amount of dead space on each side of us was the size of two regular rooms. We weren't stomping around.

What ever though. It was funny as shit to see my father in-law walk to the door drunk and go "You have to be shtooking kidding me.....you HAVE to be shtooking kidding me. Man, we have been staying here for 19 years, we are not being loud. Whoever called us in can shtook off!"

Thursday, Feb.16: Woke up sore. That fall the day before really got to my back. Well, that and a mix of drinking too much. Went out late, the rest of my group was already out. Hung out at the Skyeship Gondola mid-station for a bit trying to call them. Random dude who worked at Pico (it was his day off though) walked up and asked for a cig. I gave him one, we chatted for a bit then he asked if I wanted to ride up with him. I agreed. Thought I might get better reception up top. He starts walking past everyone in line, telling me to hurry up then he says something to the guy working the line. We walk up to an empty gondola and the guy working the line makes sure no one else gets in with us. Thought that was weird. The door closes and kid asks if I would mind if he smoked on the way up. Told him I don't care and he pulls out a joint and sparks it. Didn't partake as I normally don't like to smoke and ride, some times it's cool but not when I want to bomb, but caught a little buzz on the ride up.

Get to the top, we part ways (super nice kid) and I finally get a call from the friends. We meet up and ride for a few more hours. Nothing special, nothing fancy, just hit some groomers. Conditions were better thurs. but was just getting bored of the same groomer runs (about 40 trails were closed all week) and my back was still bothering me.

Perfect picture of how flat the light was that day.

Went to bear lodge, had some end of the day beers, and sat around waiting for some brave soul to hit the super icy pipe. Few people tried, even more failed.

Just as we started heading back to the room some flakes started falling. Pretty good touch to the end of the day. Went to the tub, as usual. Got to use the piss out of that while you have it, right? Just before we left for dinner the flakes picked up. They were calling for 3-5/3-6 inches depending on who you talked to.

Went out to Charity's for dinner. Had the Prime and seared sea scallops. No picture, to worried about eating. Really, really good. They have raised the prices a little from last year, but only about 1 to 3 dollars an item. Still decently priced. Got a 12oz prime, with 4 okay sized scallops for 26 bucks.

Had one of the best beers in my life though. Paid 11 bucks for a 750 that was 8.2%. Had active yeast in it so it might of been a touch stronger than that.

Friday, Feb.17: Woke up early, trying to catch first chair. Didn't make it but was out by 9:40. Had to deal with my crazy sister in-law trying to have us take all her shit to her car. Big ordeal. It's a whole nother story that started at the beginning of the week...don't even want to get into it right now. Too stoopid.

Got about 2 inches over night, and maybe an inch in the morning. It was cloudy when we got in the lift line, and as soon as we got on it started puking. Just dumping.

The lift that is within walking distance of the hotel is on a few peaks from the "canyon" where we wanted to go. Had to traverse over for a bit, but wasn't bad. The runs in the canyon were amazing. Wind blown, about 4 to 6 inches depending if you were in the middle, or on the sides. Had a few good slashes, one full facial, and only ate it once. It was a little steep for this out of shape Ohio rider.

Best run of the day was a trail called "East fall" Upper is a blue, lower a single black. Decently steep, fun to ride, curves a little. Lapped that for most the morning.
I approve.

And that is it. Good riding that day, and honestly for the winter they have had to deal with up in VT, riding was good for most the week. It's amazing what you can do when you have a multi million dollar budget to work with for your conditions.

I like killington, I might go as far as to say I love the place..but there are defiantly problems with the place. While they have some really great runs, some sweet cruisers, and a nice set of parks, there are far too many traversing trails. And most of those cut through some great, but steep runs, so you are forced to cat track across a field of fast moving riders and skiers. Just not the best lay out. Also, I feel there is a serious lack of intermediate trails. Sure it all comes down to each persons skill level, but I feel I am a decent rider, and my wife is a really strong skier, but just comparing the number of blacks they have, to blue, it's pretty unbalanced.

Anyways, that just comes down to my own ability, so to each their own. Not sure how many people will read the whole thing, seems pretty long to me, but I like to type. Hope ya enjoyed my sub par condition week long trip.

Now, get out there and ride!

Love how that "storm", didn't happen. It's crusty out here. Heading up for my first turns in a few minutes. Quoting the sister-in-law it is "ass ripping-ly cold". Not really anything new on the forecast, but at least it looks like it might warm up a tad mid week. I have a feeling this is going to be a bar, and hot tub heavy trip.

The only draw back from the trip was they ended up closing the Mt. on Friday due to freezing rain and power outages. Hopefully, I can make it back up there before the season is done.

You can walk to ramshead. Timeberline is about a 5 minute walk from the back door of the grand, to the main lift at ramshead. Take that lift and take a left off the lift. Timberline is just to skiers right and maybe a few hundred yards ride from the top of the lift.

I personally can't complain about the Grand. But that's probably because I never had to pay to stay there, my in-laws always pay the lodging for our yearly trip to k-town. Not bad gig, I know. Always stay in one of the penthouses (mtn facing has the most bad ass view/deck of any place I have ever stayed). But the grand is one of the most, if not most expensive place to stay in the area. Well, barring renting an entire house that is ski in ski out. If anyone is planning a trip there I would look somewhere else than the grand, unless money isn't that big of a deal for you then stay there. The outdoor pool and 2 hot tubs alone is farking awesome. Get to watch the groomers work all night, and drink outside. Breakfast there is pretty decent.

My point though, is there are tons of legit, good places to stay close to the slopes. Most even have access to the shuttle that goes from you hotel lot, to the bottom of (I think) two different bases. I am sure people that live closer to the area could chime in on good, reasonably priced places to stay. Or just insight from someone that stayed somewhere different from the Grand.

Hey if anyone is looking to stay somewhere really worth it at Killington stay at the Killington Grand. It is the best place to stay for sure! the have such a nice place the rooms are great, they have an out door heated pool and hot tubs, they have a sauna steam room and a fitness/weight room. Also there about 100 yards from the mountain. You get changed right inside and then can walk right out to the snowshed lifts it is literally a 1 min walk tops its awesome this place is the best i would highly recommend it. If you have any questions about the place and whats there just let me know.

I didnt see any signs of recent rain today. There was probably 4 or 5 in total of fresh snow on most every part of the mountain. Crowds were manageable probably due to the fact that so many people were congregating around the festivities of the Dew Tour over on Bear.

I rode from 8am up until about 3 when we headed over to get in on the Ski Superpipe finals.

Today I broke the cherry on my new NUG. I was a bit leery of the hype at first, but after about 4 seconds on the snow i was sold.... I enjoyed that little rocketship so much it's taken over the spot of my "Favorite" board. Fast, nimble, light.... it almost turns itself. I went as hard as i could and never got it to flap or chatter...... (2012 NUG 152 Directional)

I started early in the area of Needles Eye... Cruise control was groomed and super fast.... great run. Needles eye it's self was a bumpy icey mess..... From there over to Bear mountain.... then back across the peaks to play in the woods of Ramshead (squeeze play).

It's sad to report that the rain that did fall early last week did a number on what was in the trees, it's still pretty soft and ridable but it's a little thin. Some debris peeking thru the snow.... Might wait for another halfway decent natural snow before I bother with them again.

ROTD is a toss up.... Either early morning Cruise control or Wildfire over on bear. Both were wickedly fast and every time I wanted to turn, there was snow to turn on. Both had a few icy patches as the day went on.... but this is the Ice Coast, so it's too be expected.

I hope to get a few more runs in tomorrow, but we have a good crew at the house tonight so i can almost bet that the beers will be flowing....

Latest Intel I have from my Ski Patrol and Instructor Buds on the hill are grim.

Seems some warmer weather moved thru yesterday. Temps on the mountain reached the low 40s and some rain moved thru the area mid afternoon.

Word on the hill is now most everything is icy with a side of Boiler plate.

Word up dude. I figure the base in the trees will be fine by the time we come up...been dancing every night for tons of snow to crash the party up there now till we come, and really been dancing to the gods for a really good dump one of the days we are up there.

As for squeeze play, it's a cool run, but I seem to always go too far to the right and end up loosing too much speed/running into areas that aren't that thinned out branch wise. Seems to get tracked really fast too.

I'm surprised to hear that they are reaching out due to technical difficulties on the lifts. The buzz around ski patrol and other K staff is they were shutting down to to excessive crowds on wildfire AND people poaching the Dew Tour trails..... I guess it's anyone's guess at this point.

The tree's are open, and all with pretty good cover. I'll still put it out there that the tree's are in their "early season condition" but they are still VERY ridable. I personally did Low Rider, patsy's and Squeeze Play. There were good stashes of soft fluffy pow hidden here and there, with the rest a decent packed powder. Seems all the wind over the last few days took the liberty to blow a good amount into the woods for us Glade riders.....

25 days from now, with any luck, the mountain will finally be where it should be. And according to my watch... 25 days falls on Feb 11th. Barring tragedy I'll be up for my last weekend before Breck that weekend..... If all goes well, I'll meet you at the Umbrella Bar at 1 for that beer.

Looks like the skyeship express quad and bear mtn quad are both still down. Only really know what they are saying on the site, but should know a little more possibly by later today? Who knows...my father in law has been called to have questions run by him about the drive systems on those lifts. He is pretty much the go to guy for emerson electrical drives (pretty much the only drive used by rocky mountain conveyer) and as of last night there was a possibility they were going to have him come out in person and give a hand (lucky bastard would get to ski for free and stay on the slopes!) Not sure if they are going to do it though.

Either way I am really glad to hear about the 18inches that fell. How are the bases looking for the trees shift?

Great weekend at K....

K got 18" of total snow over the 2 days worth of storms. Wind was blowing, but didn't take away from the quality of riding. COLD as a MO FO all weekend. Temps in single digits with wind chills going as low as -30 at times. BUT, with the weather staying cold, the pow stayed light and rode like a dream.

K has the majority of their runs open now, and with that there is a MUCH better flow to the riding. More lift options mean less lines, although key lifts still had larger than normal lines for MLK weekend (Gondi, Superstar, Sky Peak Express). Best snow of the day was found on runs that you would least expect. Upper Royal Flush, Upper Bunny Buster, Northstar and Vagabond (just to name a few).

ROTD was easily my first run. I was on the 3rd gondola for the day, so it was fresh tracks everywhere I went. I blew off the fiance for the day (no friends on a pow day) and rode with one other boarder. Our Maiden run was Great Northern>Fis>Ridge Run>G. Northern Middle>Mouse Trap>Bunny Buster. Fresh tracks on all except Mouse Trap where Ski Patrol had already popped that cherry.

Monday they closed access/lifts on Bear Mountain. They claim it's to help push along the progress of the Dew tour Park and pipe... but if you ask me it's because Wildfire (upper and lower) are a complete Sh!t Show due to all the trail closings FOR the Dew tour.

Good runs in the trees on Snowdon mtn... Both Low Rider and Patsy's had good coverage and very little use. I expected little cover, but was pleasantly surprised as it's been way to long since I've been in the trees.

Dew tour starts Thursday.... I'll be heading up Friday. Last year the event had the mountain almost clear of people.... so i expect to ride both days, and watch the events early evening.

Most of Central and Southern VT experience an Inversion this past weekend. This is where the air is colder on the Bottom of the mtn than the Top. I know at K they were skiing above the clouds at one point, but the lower elevations were definitely foggy.

A rare thing... consider yourself lucky to have experienced it while riding.

i think if you buy online for a weekend it'll be like $150 for 2 days of riding, then just depends where you want to stay. i usually stay at the hillside inn cause it seems to be the cheapest (and i figure i'll be mostly at the mountain or the bar) so i dont really care about luxury. that said, the place is decent...i think it used to be a red roof inn...maybe like $100 a night depending when you go.

Yeah, not going to make it now. Between being sick, and spending money on going to the doctor (my hometown where I got sick at didn't have a place open that took my insurance, so had to pay premium urgent care co-pay) it just isn't going to work out. Shame too, my day 1 keeps getting pushed back. Also looks like K is going to have lots of ample temps to blow snow, and get a few inches of real.
Although, the low for tomorrow night is 4. Will be interesting to see how everything rides after that .

just came back from killington - had a great time - avoid the dark side of the mountain - all ice! They are making a lot of snow and we had some inches fall when we were up there. Overall, with 40 trails open it was worth the trip.

Home with the roast in the oven. Rode from 9am until about 1:30 today. Crowds were easily 10x the size they were last year. Disappointing when we were hoping to have the hill to ourselves again.

Snow quality really hasn't changed much. It was still really cold and the snow was crunchy and fast. With temps staying down, more and more terrain is opening every day. Today I noticed there was more on Ramshead, and in the Canyon. Progress is slow, but it's progress. I spoke with one of the snow making guys and he said that they hope to have Needles Eye terrain open mid week, and possibly a few trails over on Bear by the weekend. Optimistic, but doable.... his words.

I see another thaw in the forecast on Tuesday... cross your fingers that it passes us by.

Just wrapped up for the day.... Started at 8am with a run down Great Northern to Mouse trap. Was cold today, like, really cold... temp in the truck was 9 deg when we started.

Snow was firm and crunchy, with a really solid base of ice. The crowds were relatively small so what snow there was stayed on the hill longer than normal. ROTD was Chute top to bottom.... natural ungroomed snow at the top, and groomed snow under the snowguns at the bottom. Some ice patches, but to be expected when temps drop as low as they were.

Skye peak was a ghost town, with more ice than other runs. Most of the runs over on Skye (that are open) are in the shade all day, so ice is typical after a thaw like we had on Wednesday.

Overall it was fast and fun... with just enough snow to hold a good edge when you wanted it too. Temps are supposed to stay low for the next few days. They had full assault of snowmaking in the lower canyon and on some of the more popular open terrain. With any luck they will have more terrain open for New Years weekend.... but expect all of the snow to be man made, as there is nothing natural in the local forecast.

If you are still on the fence for NYE, I'd say pack up and go... even tho there isn't as much terrain open as we all hope, what is open is fast, fun and has great coverage. Mountain Photographers are out in full force, and i happened to find every one on the hill , so hopefully there will be a new profile pic in my near future!

Riding again on xmas morning, i'll be sure to post if i have time in between holiday festivities.

Rode Killy today.... 4 to 5 in of fresh at the bottom, 6 or 7 at the top. Continued to snow all day, with MAYBE another 2 inches of accumulation.

Good runs early, got piled up and crowded by noon. ROTD was Great Northern>FIS>Mousetrap>Bunny Buster. After attacking that several times it started to wear thin in places, and some of the wet slushy snow underneath started to show its ugly face.

Best snow on the hill was on the upper mountain, Rime Reason and Upper East fall. I lapped that until it was time for a recharge at the bar.

After a few coldies at Mahogany Ridge, I went back out to the superstar chair and lapped bittersweet and superstar a few times.... nothing exciting, but it was good to be on another peak.

Snow making was in full force on Skye Peak and in the Canyon. Hoping to see runs like Escapade and Lower East fall in the next few days.... that will open up another way off of K peak, helping fix the BAD bottle neck problem they have going on right now.

Riding again tomorrow but with several "learners". I imagine I'll get a few runs in on Superstar and bittersweet, but I would be willing to bet that I'll spend the majority of the day watching my fiance's relatives fall over and over..... Safety Meeting anyone?

+1, the conditions in New England are poor with lots of ice (much, much more than typical Northeast Ice). Unfortunately, it looks like rain is coming in Wed night to Thur which will turn everything into a skating rink. We need snow ....!!!

I didnt make it up last weekend but had a handful of friends that did go. They said it was "dust on crust" in most places. Hard boiler plate ice with a thin layer of man made snow on top. Most of the pass holders in my group took one or two runs and called it a day. Was cold on sunday.... I'm hearing rumors of 3 degrees on Sunday... then add in the wind chill.

There's a few small snow storms in the forecast for this week.... keep your fingers crossed for some help from Ma Nature.

Our dates are Feb 12-17th. The wife and I are planning to either go up 2 days early, or stay 2 extra days at our friends house (the sugashack people..) Can't remember though, you normally don't ride during the week?

As for the umbrella bar, That will be the first place we stop for a drink on the first day. My in-laws are.....umm...well lets call them drinkers to be nice. I kid.....I kid..they do love to drink though!

It's cool man, like I said, I MIGHT be there NYE weekend. Either way, I am 100% going to be there mid Feb. Rooms booked...now the weather needs to get it's act in shape......

BTW, That sounds awful about the 5000 people, 20 "trails"...

Awful is an understatement. It was a mass of beginners on non beginner terrain. I think i saw ski patrol sled down 30-40 people thru the day with injuries. I rode as long as i could, but I finally gave up at 11am when they opened the Umbrella Bar. Def do yourself the favor and check that out if you make it up.

On the flip side, it's been cold up there.... and with a few small dumps of natural snow, the mountain is really shaping up. They opened the Skye peak on Sunday, and even more terrain today.

What are the dates you will be there in February? I have a trip to Breck on Feb 18th to the 25th.

Rode there the weekend of December 10th. Good fast snow. Icey in spots but manageable.

Crowds were easily the worst I've ever experienced at Killington. Having such little terrain open, and several events going on there were times that it felt like traffic cops were needed at trail intersections. I was talking to a Mountain Ambassador and he said with the Rail Jam, and 2 different age classes of racers... they estimated there to be around 5000 people at K skiing/riding on Saturday. With only 20 or so trails open... well... you do the math.

BmW... I will at Sugarloaf for NYE weekend. I opted for a Blackout pass this year in hopes to save a buck, and motivate myself to go to a few other mountains. So, unfortunately, you're going to have to wait on that beer....

Was there last weekend- conditions were great from 8am till about noon. After that pretty choppy and icey but still fun riding. Lines weren't too bad but the mountain did get extremely crowded where their were 2 main intersections. Longest wait was 5-10 mins at the Gondola between 11-1

I believe two schools from PA and MD were up then so there were a TON of people learning on what Killington calls 'advanced terrain'

Going back up on Sunday- looks to be fairly good with the cold temps during the end of the week and guns on full blast. I think they are shooting to have something like 22-25 trails open with Skye Peak opening up and the bunny hill in from of Snowshed too.

I've been during both stellar and less than stellar times thru the whole season. I'll be up there for the full xmas week, until Thursday when I change it up and head for Sugarloaf.

You can rest assured that even if it IS a stellar weekend at Killington the lines are going to be borderline insane. The best way to zerg the crowd is to get in early, ride as much as you can, and then break for a LONG lunch. Crowds will drop back off after 1pm. By then the mountain will be pretty ski'd up, but if your just looking to dodge crowds, that's the game at K.

In my opinion I think there is little to no chance that we will see snow any further from K peak than Snowdon mtn. Typically Bear mtn is the last to open, and this year is no exception.

Keep doing those snow dances..... Weather is turning around quickly... take a peek at the current NOAA forecast.

Right now the weather isnt looking to promising to keep the snow this week. I just went up this past weekend and it was really warm up there and there was a lot of melting snow. It was like spring skiing. Everyone was pushing the snow into moggles Once this week is over and the rain has passed i think it is suppose to cool down and Killingotn will be able to make snow and keep it accumulating.

that's unbelieveable that they are open already. I'm down by NYC, so I can't even imagine hitting the slopes this early. Even on New Years Weekend, the local places are 'very limited' in slope access.

Typically by that time Most of the mountain will be open, obviously depending on the weather. If this year is anything like last year, expect mid January to be cold (20s), and windy.

Melting during the day is the least of the worries in the short term...looks like everyone in the state who has anything open may be starting from scratch if this forecast holds true. Hopefully the cold air moves in quicker and the changeover happens earlier. Current temp in Burlington is 63 btw.

This is the mountain forecast for Killington at 3,600ft and it is similar for all of the other mountains I looked at today.

Tonight: Rain, mainly after 9pm. The rain could be heavy at times. Areas of fog after 11pm. Low around 34. Very windy, with a south wind between 45 and 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Wednesday: Rain and snow showers likely, mainly before 8am. Increasing clouds, with a temperature falling to around 32 by 4pm. Windy, with a south wind 29 to 32 mph decreasing to between 18 and 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Snow was pretty awesome on Thanksgiving and the day before.

On Wednesday we had 10in of fresh at our house in Pittsfield... about the same on the mtn. It then continued to snow through the day on Wednesday making conditions as good as I've seen on a Thanksgiving. Add to that the fact that there was about a total of 50 people on the mountain... it made for a great day.

Thanksgiving was colder, with pretty gusty winds.... snow was still great as we were riding on 28 trails. Even good ol' Northstar was open.... surprising as typically we dont see that trail open until late December.... if not later. Crowds were a bit worse on the holiday, but still manageable.

Friday was warm.... 48 if my thermometer was accurate. Crowds were ridiculous by 11am... sucking the fun from just about every part of the hill. Saturday was warmer, and more crowded.....

I did a few quick runs on Sunday morning.... all, if not more, of the fresh snow is long gone. The trail count was dropping, and the temp still rising. By the time I left on Sunday, things were looking a bit ruff, but still ridable.

I wont be going back for at least 2 weeks in hopes that colder temps settle in, and the snowmaking crew/ma nature has some time to fix the damage that the warm weather did to the mountain.

"Killington received 10 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours and its still snowing! Thanks to Mother Nature and our dedicated snowmakers, we’re skiing and riding top to bottom down a section of Snowdon Mountain.

We’ll continue to make snow and expand terrain as long as the conditions permit. Killington is offering skiing and riding on advanced terrain only. No beginner terrain is available. Key lifts will open at 9:00 a.m. and last chair at the North Ridge Triple is at 3:30 p.m.

For Wednesday, skiers and riders will be cruising down 13 trail segments, which combined skis more like four trails. Plus, the early season Reason Terrain Park is open with six features."

Looks and sounds like some heavy stuff, but hey, it's November and you just got 10 inches. Go ride it!

Typically they have enough terrain open mid December to hold Beginner Lessons. And if the temps keep staying low, you may even see it open sooner. If you are planning a trip, I'd take the time to call them and get a professional opinion as to when they will start giving lessons.

I know that as soon as they lower elevation terrain can be opened that they will start having both group and one on one beginner lessons available.... it's all in mother natures hands.

As of last night (November 21) Killington was making snow in the Ramshead learning area. Look to have beginner terrain available for lessons soon...

Judging by the view of the webcams, and the pics posted on Killington's Facebook, they are currently making snow top to bottom. From what I can tell they are blowing snow from the Peak, down Great Northern onto Snowdon Mountain.

A good friend of mine that is a ski instructor there says this terrain will be open for Thanksgiving weekend, but wouldn't count on it for the weekend before.

Snow is still pretty good... similar to spring skiing corn snow. Good cover, very little ice (as of last weekend 11/12-11/13). Lift lines were on the long side, but traffic was light on the runs. Be ready for the Stairway to Heaven after a day of riding....

Went on a day trip to Killington last year with this company. Pickups in Suffolk, Nassau and the city. It's a long day going back and forth the same day. Definitely cheaper than driving up yourself.

Hey 2scoops.... snow was good last weekend, but it's been warm since then. If it was me trying to decide to drive that distance I'd lay low until they get more terrain open.... sure riding early November is great, but it's really only 2 or 3 trails total, so in my opinion it's not worth a 6 hour drive.

Access to the bottom without the gondola wasn't a problem for me on Sunday.

Excellent... I tried to hop the rope onto lower east fall to head down, but was promptly stopped by the excessive amount of ski patrol everywhere. Lesson learned.... next time I'll work on finding a bit more of a "rural" route.

Killington was fun this weekend.... good coverage and soft snow on Rime, with a small 5 feature park set up on Reason. Sunday they opened Upper East fall for riding under the snow guns..... most of the terrain is ungroomed, but soft and very ride-able with little to no ice.

Access to the North Ridge is fed by the upper section of Great Northern, with no access to the bottom of the mountain as of yet. Anyone needing to go to the lodge, or being done for the day will need to take the trek across the dreaded peak walkway in order to get back to the gondi.

K has a small concession stand set up near the lift line at North Ridge triple chair, selling burgers, dogs and some non-alcoholic beverages. No bathrooms are available at or near the skiable terrain, remember that before you go up, ladies... handle your business before hoping on the gondola.

Keep in mind that the 9 open trails they are advertising are all sections. In reality there is one maybe two ways from the top down to the only running lift. So in essence... it's $39 for 2 trails. A little steep in my opinion, but who am i to complain... I'm a season pass holder so price doesn't effect me much.

Happy shredding to anyone going up.... if the weather stays cold, maybe I'll see you next weekend.

It looks like Sunday River didn't want to be outdone by Killington for opening day bragging rights.

Edit: You have to give props to SR for the 10:01 start time and not disrespecting the fact that K announced first.

Today at Sunday River

We're pulling the trigger.

Sunday River will officially open for the 2011-12 season on Saturday, October 29 at 10:01am for a three-day weekend, marking the fifth year in a row we've been skiing and riding by Halloween.

Thanks to 24 hours of hard work by the Sunday River operations team and the most powerful snowmaking arsenal in the known universe the Locke Mountain Triple will spin for skiing and riding on the T2 trail on upper Locke Mountain, plus we'll have an early-season terrain park set up with a single barrel rail, flat rail and flat box.

All open terrain this weekend will be suitable for advanced skiers and riders only, and as always we'll be pushing to open more terrain as fast we can so stay tuned as events unfold. Lift service will open at 8am on Sunday and 9am on Monday, running to 4pm daily with the last upload at 3:30pm.

Lift tickets for Saturday through Monday will be $29 and available at at Barker Base Lodge, but as a special Halloween treat anyone in costume can ski for free on Monday. No, dressing as a skier or snowboarder does not count, and if you question the validity of your costume we suggest bringing candy which may help convince the ticket staff.

After Monday we'll will shut down temporarily but aim to open the following weekend.

Mt Snow is only opening for their "pre season rail jam". Dont expect them to turn any lifts, as this is usually just a "lap the rails" type setup.

I should be around on Sunday too.... we're planning to ride in the am and hike around to the hidden stuff later in the day.

Basin ski report is still pretty optimistic....

The truck is all packed with my beater board and outerwear, ready to head north as soon as i get out of work. My lady has a halloween party this weekend so i'm leaving her behind.... There's something to be said about a 3.5 hr drive w no one whining, having to pee, or wanting to stop for whatever crazy reason!

The umbrella bar IS going to be tuff to heat, but i think they plan to use the "lamp post" style heaters so people can enjoy their drinks in the tents or out.... all while still staying warm.

It was the K55 deal last year for $55 so it went up $2. Not a big deal, but K57 doesn't roll off the tongue like K55 does.

Here's a deal for buy 1 get 1 free until 12/16/11. Yeah, it's early season but still a better deal than K57 since they'll end up being around $41.

K has some moguls.... but I woudlnt say it has a higher percentage of mogul runs when compared to any other mtn in the area. I ride there 30+ days a year and have been for years now.... so I cant say that it's not snowboard friendly.

Honestly dude, I have no idea. I have posted this in a different killy thread before but....

When we go we stay at the penthouse in the killington grand hotel right at the base. It's a huge "room" with a master suite, another room with a king size bed, and another with 4 twins. 2 bathrooms, full kitchen, your own sauna room right off the HUGE living room, and if you get the one facing slope side, a massive deck..which is perfect for doing keg stands...

I personally do not know the price, as my in-laws are BA and pay for our room, and lift tickets (which come with the room at a discounted price). I can only imagine how much it costs, I over heard once and thought I heard someone say that for the week (sunday-friday) is just under 4k. Which, really...if you can get enough people it would be decently priced. The room "sleeps" 8 on the beds, and there are 2 pull out couches, so 12 comfortably. That being said, if people don't mind air mattresses, you could squeeze another 6 or so people comfortably enough.

If you want to do it on the cheap, do not stay at the killington grand. Unless like I stated above if you can round up about 20 of your friends it would be a decent price. There are many other options around the area that are much cheaper. Just depends on what kinda of amenities you want. Some places you will have to drive yourself to the hill, others are on the shuttle line.

I have also mentioned this before, and am still waiting to hear back on if they are cool with it, but my friend owns part of a time share within a mile of the lifts, and I am pretty sure it is on the shuttle line. Last year a few mutual friends stayed there and were charged 25 bucks a night. It is hostel style though so just depends if that is your thing, and don't mind meeting new people, and so on. Once I hear back if it is okay if people on here use the place I will post details and let everyone know.

I am not from the area, I am an Ohio boy, so I am sure there are other places some locals could chime in on. I have just been going there for the past 4 years.

Thanks for that man. Will have to see if it saves us money or not. Usually get discounted tickets with our room. Gonna have to ask the in-laws if this beats the price we get. Itching for the flakes to fly!

I will also keep my eyes open for the MANY "buy one get one" coupons that end up floating around. Those are typically the best deal if they fall on the dates when you are there.

Killington Resort is pleased to announce that we will be reopening Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 for the fall foliage season. Route 4 East from Rutland and West from Woodstock will also open Friday, allowing access to the Killington area.

The K-1 Express Gondola will spin from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. weekends only through Sept. 25 and daily Oct. 1-10 for scenic rides and hiking access. Mountain biking operations have concluded for the summer so that we may focus on preparing the mountain for the upcoming snow sports season.

The Killington Golf Course and Pro Shop will reopen daily, Friday, Sept. 16-Oct. 10. Tee times are available from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. daily. Initially, fourteen holes will be available with the additional four coming online by the middle of next week. The Clubhouse Grill will be open with bar service including drinks, snacks and hot dogs every Friday-Sunday for the remainder of the season.

Additionally, Killington Resort Lodging will be accepting reservations for arrivals beginning on Sept. 23, 2011.

I have always been fascinated with the raw power water can have. I live on a small ravine, and every time it rains more than an inch I am just wowed. Even with just 4 or so inches of running water large rocks (I would say about 50 lbs or so) get displaced 10 to 15 yards within minutes.

I went up this past weekend to check on our house at Stratton and make some donations and try and help out. The damage in Stratton was not very bad. Trying to go anywhere East or North of Stratton was next to impossible. There are so many roads washed away and with all the rain coming still I'm afraid its going to get worse. I did get to some areas that were closed off to most people and got to see some impressive repair work being done by the National Guard. Those guys are pretty amazing. Between Stratton and Mt. Snow there are large sections of rt 100 that are completely gone and were repaired only well enough for a capable 4x4 to get through.

If I can get myself up there, I'll def relay any info I have on progress and additional wash out from this additional rain.

I was going to go up this past weekend, but was told by several friends that I shouldn't bother. Guess there's only 2 times when they allow general public to pass on rt 100 north. And with that, you were (supposedly) required to follow a police escort thru the damaged area...... so i figured best to just keep myself out of the way until traffic flows more freely.

I'll be looking forward to a day of shredding with yah at K.... I'm there almost every weekend except for Feb 18th to the 25th when I'll be at Breck.

I did ok, some water damage to the house I live in, some trees down at our rental property. Had to do some roof work for the rental property as well. All in all, nothing major.

As for the VT house, a friend of a friend of a friend (yea... really) went by the property and said we just had a ton of trees blocking the driveway.... nothing on the house from what they could see. So i'm hopeful that a weekend of chainsaws and beer will have us ready to ride.

I'm hopefully heading up Friday afternoon, if so i'll try to post some pics of what i find.

It's not first hand, sorry...but there are many facebook pages right now that provide some good first hand info on roads in the area. One of the best I have heard is "Vermont Flooding 2011" page on facebook. I have a few friends scattered about in Vermont, and they said that this page is amazing for figuring out what roads are open and such. Usually if you post the route you want to take, others will tell you if it is open, and condition. Hope this helps...

ummmm........YEAH! I am allllll for the whistler trip, but like I said, I am not the one planning the trip, nor paying for a majority of it, so not up to me. Either way, any trip out of Ohio is always a plus for me.

Yeah, I think we are confused on the sugar shack thing.
The one I know is a time share style house, sleeps like 20, has a hot tub and that's it. Def. not a shop. haha.

yeah, for sure don't post directions to any of the sweet spots, and from what I have heard about coopers, there would be a lot of pissed off people if they found out directions were being posted publicly/and or yorkers and the like showed up and then asked how to get out

I have a good idea where it starts and goes, but yeah man, have to revive this thing when it gets close to that magical time of the year again for a meet up.

although, my wife's fam. is thinking about doing whistler this year instead of k-town. we will see, nice nice people, but at times drink WAY too much and forget to get the ball rolling on things like that.

Sugar shack... yea I know the place. Makes a rockin breakfast, sells Maple Syrup and candies. Been there many times.... never once been disappointed.... Left hand turn out of the access road... 2-3 miles up on the right. Between Pico and Rutland.... Honestly it's one of our "regular" stops if we skip a day of riding.

***EDIT*** I might be thinking of sugar and spice.... so I might be way off.

Coops is pretty awesome... tucked off the back of the main face, (i had typed directions to it, but decided against it). Quick run thru some woods and your on it. Always a few friendly faces in there willing to share their goods. Chances are if/when you come to K, I'll be there as well, so I'll just show you the way.

I too have heard some stories about guys getting stuck out there over night.... so I'm sure there is some validity to the bellhop. I've ventured out there alone a few times.... never once felt lost. But i cant argue with your logic on that one... I know for dam sure I wouldn't go off the back of any mountain I didn't know.

we got bombarded by hundreds of firefighters from boston last year. Nice guys for sure, shared beers with us in the outdoor pool at the grand, but damn I can't take more than an hour of that accent.

I would love to hit up Cooper's Cabin. Heard so many amazing stories about the place.

As for local folk lore, I am sure some of that was started up to keep the non-locals out to keep the terrain in those stashes fresh. Last year though, one of the bellhops at the grand got stuck over night, the day before we showed up. Hung out with that kid for an hour or so, and didn't get a bullshit vibe about it. Non the less, my rule of thumb is, even if I have a map, and scout the area, I don't normally do off slope stuff without a local.

Might be a weird question with an incredible low possibility of you knowing the place, but have you ever heard of the "sugar shack"? few kids I know are part owners of the place, and is also only 2 or 3 miles from the slopes.

Haha... thanks for the fix. One of the members of my ski house sent me that link about a year back... it's really interesting reading for anyone that's a New England Skier/rider.

If you make it up to K I'd love to show you the few stashes that I know about. Maybe a trip off the back to Cooper's Cabin for a sesh... if that's your flavor. Either way, some of the best terrain at K is off the beaten trail a bit.... and as far as the horror stories, I'm sure some have some validity, but I imagine alot of them are local folk lore.

Being only 3 hours away from K and owning a share in a house less than 3 miles from the access road, I'm there almost every weekend. I put 33 days on at K and Pico last year.... 28 the year before. Putting that many days on at the same mountain is probably one of the reasons I'll miss the South Ridge chair most.... it becomes a game of "dodge the New Yorkers" on busy days.

A few of the guys I ride with are pretty avid back country (skiers) guys. Been pass holders at K for 10+ years, so they're pretty great to follow around.

I wish I didn't live 12+ hours away so I could ride there more. Have heard about MANY cool little stashes all over the mtn, but either never found them, or didn't want to try without a local with me. While I have been there a total of 18 times (3 years in a row for 6 days at a time) I have just heard too many horror stories about non-locals (and even seasoned locals as well) getting caught off mtn. in some sweet ass tree runs and cliffers, but not being able to find their way out and having to spend the night out their...and well, I'm just not tryin to do that to myself..

Really need to meet up with one of you locals this coming season, mixed with a massive dump.

Thanks for the link. I really like reading up on the history of every place I have been, and for some reason really like reading about killingtons in particular. Maybe it's all the stigma some people put on the place, or politics of no more june riding.

I am a fan of that area because it's one of the only parts of the mountain that is completely natural snow. Pair that with the fact that it's off the beaten trail which keeps the Numbers down. I was good for a trip or two up that chair every time it ran.

I agree that you don't see it running as often as the main lifts, but usually that's because of thin cover. But when it was running, that part of the mountain could be a great time. Good wood riding off "The Jug".

I imagine it's not tops on the priority list, but the more time goes on, the more of that "side" of the mountain they close.... Believe it or not that side of the mountain used to ride all the way down to the rt 4/rt 100 split.

This link has some great history of how the moutain has developed into what it is today. Check out the "Sunrise" section to see what I mean about how they keep taking from that portion of the mtn.

On the plus side.... having no direct lift access will turn those wood runs into a sweet powder stash on snowy days.

I have no information to help you figure that out, but..

what do you like to ride over on that side of the mtn? not too many trails that it services, like what, 3 or 4 trails? With all the other great trails they have, how often do you make it over to south ridge?
In the handful of times I have been to k-town in the past 3 years, I never once saw that thing running. I don't think it is on the high priority list for them to replace it, with all the work they are putting into the peak lodge.

So on Killington's "Summer Improvement" statement they said they are removing the South Ridge Triple. And with that statement they also said they would be replacing it in the future.... how long in the future?

W/o that chair in operation to ride that terrain you have to take the Skye Peak quad... down to Super Star Quad, then traverse to the K1 Gondola. Probably a 20min+ adventure without taking lift lines into account. Pretty disappointing if you ask me...

i was just there on the 14th and 15th last week...thursday was pretty wet and sloppy with some cloud cover....friday was a little firmer snow and was an absolutely beautiful day. a lot of the trails were closed and it was typical spring conditions but was still a lotta fun. my friend and i actually went on a closed off trail and kept hiking back up to hit this decent jump. did my first 360 after a few tries :) ..sucks that i gotta wait til next season to try again tho. sadly my season is over, but thought killington was worth it even at season's end.

booking through the website (stay at like mountain green, pinnacle, highridge) is pretty decently priced. we stayed for the wkend and it was about $150 a person for the wkend. That's for 2 nights lodging and includes 2 day lift tix.

Bolton valley has night riding. It is right outside of burlington and is a hidden gem in vermont.

Killington can be fun, but i only go early/late season. There are way better options mid season. Sugarloaf in maine announced they will stay open till may 15th, so my late season killington trips will now be to there.

I was just there for the past three days. The juggernaut has been closed the entire time since it doesn't have snowmaking on it. Unless Killington gets a couple feet of snow I don't think you are going to be able to ride it anyways.

That is not really a trail for snowboarding it is more of a cross country skiing trail. I once got onto that trail the first time I went there and its absolute hell when you get to the flat parts that last a mile or more at a time.

We hit Killington today and had a great time. They have 48 trails open, lines weren't long and conditions were reasonable although the steeper trails (East Fall, Superstar,

Skylark) had a fair amount of ice but it is all good.

i was there this weekend. Friday was pretty cold, it was about 17 degrees at mid day. it had the best conditions. Saturday was a bit icy. Sunday was great during the day time with powder but rain came noon. there were almost 40 trails open on friday i believe but when i checked on monday it was back down to 30. warm weather kills

went to killy yesterday, it was real good from about 8 to 1 when it was snowing, visibility was crap but the snow was real nice on some trails. then it turned to straight rain and we had to call it a day. still a good day of riding

Killington is fun for both skiers and riders, however, the green traversing trails (going between peaks) can be fairly flat at times so if your riding those (try to avoid them) make sure your speed is up and your wax is fresh. This won't be a problem yet as not that much terrain is open.

Only thing I can think of is map your routes out beforehand. Pretty easy to get stuck on winding greens that have too much flatland or getting stuck in a spot where you have to go through tons of moguls (but maybe you like em).

The deal is still there. They say that with the deal you don't know where you are actually staying until you finalize the purchase, but it's pretty obvious comparing the descriptions which ones you are actually booking.

I went to Killington a few times. I found that staying in the Killington Grand wasn't too badly priced, provided you stay and ski there for 5 days. If you did not stay and ski there that long, I would not recommend it as I think it would be very pricey. I am not sure how much a 3 day package would be. But the 5 day package was not that bad. You got a nice breakfast buffet included, and you are just a walk across the bridge to the lift. They have an outdoor heated pool that's open year round. You get in the pool indoors and swim through some plastic strips to get outdoors. It's pretty neat. If you were never there, a trip to the wobbly barn steakhouse is a must. Its pricey, but its very good. The service has always been good there too. Casey's Caboose is a good restaurant as well. And Basin Sports is on of the best ski/snowboard shops I have ever been to.

Sunday was OK, it was great to see some snow, my first time at Killington, like the K-1 gondola and the sheer size of the place. There was no waiting for lifts and the place really thinned out after 3 p.m..

Yesterday was pretty windblown, with a lot of traffic on the runs, making everything pretty icy. When we left yesterday they were getting natural snow showers so this morning should be good, but look for it to be skied off by 1pm.

Another day at Kton to report on....

Windy today (Saturday November 27th) and much colder than yesterday, snow was in good shape early but was ridden off by noon. 4 major lifts running, so crowds were manageable before lunch.

Gotta hand it to the snow-making crews... very impressive job with the amount of time they had to work.

If you plan to ride Killington before Tday weekend wraps up, be sure to get there early, and get some good runs in before the crowds hit.

A decent snow squall dumped about 2in of fresh snow when I was wrapping up for the day. Walked out of the bar to a snow covered vehicle.

Expect more and better snow tomorrow as snow crews were already going strong as i left.

I got up to Killington a few years ago and it was a blast compared to PA boarding. Conditions were great, the trails were endless (comparatively) and the mountain had tons of great people. All around I would love to go back.
If anyone is looking for an awesome place to stay too, check out the Red Clover Inn. Sounds shabby but its actually a really nice bed and breakfast joint. A little pricey but a great place to stay and even better place to take a significant other. I will mention i heard it sold to new owners recently so I'm not sure how it is compared to a few years ago but still a really cool place.

Rode here this morning (friday november 26th). Soggy at the bottom(rain), but it was trying to change over to snow. Top was very foggy, and difficult at times to see. But the snow was soft, and coverage was acceptable..... I left before 11 am so didn't see much of a crowd.

Temps supposed to drop up here so the buzz around the mtn is more snow making tonight... and with flurries in the forecast tomorrow, it should make for good riding.

From what I can tell they have green trails open but not the easiest green trails. But I haven't been there yet, maybe one of the Killington veterans can comment. I've got a place on a bus going up there Sunday, I'm pissed because I twisted my knee kiteboarding yesterday. Hope I can still go with a brace.

Yeah, that man made stuff didn't seem like it would hold up well to rain, but they're predicting three days of snow in the next week, plus ideal snowmaking temps. Should be good this weekend.

I got to ride Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all beautiful days, bringing me up to 12 days, so far. Those guns were killer, but it was worth enduring them to get top to bottom going. With the rate they are blowing snow, they will be getting a lot more open soon.

I spotted the same guy with the 160 Reverse Crew, I've seen before this weekend.

I rode yesterday and today; it was pretty fun—missed hitting up on snow. The problem was that during the afternoon, a lot of the places were melting a bit, which meant by close some places I was boarding on wet rocks. I think they need like 3x thicker snow to last the day.

Anyways, I'll be heading up tomorrow.

If people are looking for a good place to stay to date my favorite place has been the Inn Of The Six Mountains. It is the best place you can stay for the money its a mile from the lifts but they have a free shuttle so its no big deal. Second best place is Mountain Inn which is around the same price but is right on the mountain so you can walk it if you want. Just don't stay in the Killington Grand Resort Hotel it is way overpriced for what you get.

I've never had much trouble with the traffic... but i can see how that could be a problem. If you ask me... a 20 min ride to save $100+ is well worth it.

I know there's a hotel/motel on 4 about half way to Rutland.... it's an Econo-lodge.

Killington is reporting top to bottom snow-making in progress since last night at 6pm. No official announcements yet, but keep your eyes on their trail list... i bet you'll see top-bottom riding by the end of this weekend.

To you guys looking out for lodging... look into NorthStar Lodge... last year (before i bought my house) i stayed there during the early season for 40$ a night.

The roads are perfectly dry.... as is the parking lot and the lower half of the mountain. There is snow cover on almost all of the runs, but it's thin... so thin u can see tall grass thru the snow.

Driving wont be an issue....

I agree... their choice of "calming" music was nauseating. And with the length of that lift line... it was horrific. I was at the lookout drinking beers by 12 noon.

Hard to say d15.... all depends on temps. Weather right now says that colder weather is setting in late this week and lasting thru Thanksgiving weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.

I was on the hill for 8am when they started the lifts... by 1030 there was a 15 min lift line... so i cleared out by 11. Good riding, cover was good.... a little icy in spots.... but hot and crowded.

Also... what was up with the "reggae" pink floyd they were playing at the lift line.... way to murder a few classics kton.

The trails that are opens are Blue/Black terrain.... Not the hardest on the mtn but def not something for a beginner. The runs will be crowded and the snow will be man made so that will bring another degree of difficulty to the table.

In my opinion Killington wont see beginner terrain until December.... as most of the easy stuff is lower elevation.

Yhey claim no beginner terrain is open yet. My GF is taking the trip up with me this weekend so im wondering if the trails they have open are going to be "easy" enough for her to cruise down. Never been to Killington so I'm not familiar with the stuff they have open and trail names etc.

Killington has 6 trails open... they call them trails but i'd describe it more as segments. 2.5-3 true TRAILS to the mid point in the mtn.

They do have a park open on Reason.... 4 features....

A few years ago I went up to Killington when they were getting dumped on. We stayed at the Best Western in Rutland I believe. It was fairly nice, and I don't think it was outrageously expensive. But then again, my parents paid for it. haha. I'll never forget the ride up there though. What's usually a 3 hour drive from CT was a 6 hour drive and the highways were just snow ruts. As I was a passenger, I was loving the fact it was snowing so much, but to this day, my parents still say it was the worst driving they had ever done in snow. But hey, I had fun and got to ride some great powder! Maybe I should thank them...

Look for a place in Rutland, VT. It will be a lot cheaper there than on the mountain. It's only like a 10 minute drive to Killington, too. There is a Ramada, Red Roof and Holiday Inn, among many others.

It was pretty crowded, but the conditions were pretty fun. Pretty much the same stuff they always have open for opening day, Rime/Reason, etc. Almost 100% man-made snow, but they did a nice job with it. The snowmaking crew at Killington/Pico has really stepped it up last year and this year. It got really nice in the afternoon when it warmed up and the crowds moved out. The "Stairway to Heaven" wasn't too fun to climb up after a day of riding.

Why are they always so overpriced at the beginning of the season? $49. for 5 trails, I am anxious to get out their but that adds up with a family in tow for limited terrain open and a long drive.
