Ok so far I have written three reviews each of them on headphones. And I guess looking back I may have been able to cut out some of the stuff I wrote about and kept it to the basics. Heres a post i wrote to someone else today to explain the ways to avoid the flag :) It might help:

1. Talk about the product. Sounds easy. Youd be surprised. No one really cares that your mate thinks its the bestest shirt ever or that it couldnt fit in your locker. They dont know what your taste is, nor the dimensions of your locker. Since we arent selling best friends who think this style of shirt is awesome, its probably best to not pad your review out with random stuff. Dont get me wrong, pad away if its an already extensive review and you just want to add color to it, but dont make the padding the core part of your tale here. 
2. If you havent used it, dont write a review on it.
3. Follow up: If you havent used it in the terrain its supposed to be used then please, just dont. Its annoying. Head to my account! You see those spam flags i have on reviews? I flagged them? You know why? Reason 3. If im flagging my own reviews for breaking this rule, im flagging yours too.
4. Never ever post a thread on an item that you clearly havent used. If youre listing yourself as a guy, about 180lbs, and your review history consists of boards in the 161 range, i dont really want to know your opinion on a 147 space metal fantasy. I dont want to know "your girlfriend"s opinion either through the prism of your account. If she rides it, she can tell me all about it herself by starting an account. This keeps things nice and simple since i dont have to then look for bullshit giveaways that show youre just talking out your ass.
5. Tell me something... ANYTHING... that shows youve actually used the item. Repeating key phrases from the public blurb does nothing, saying "i rode this" does nothing. These are not what a review is about. You using something is a prerequisite for you to even starting your review. See number 2 for confirmation on this point.
6. If you cant figure out what to say about a product, dont review it. Youll just lose a flag and it rings you one step closer to locking you out for good.
7. Unless you are an absolute MASTER of the written word, a one sentence review on a snowboard isnt going to cut it. Sure, some people can condense a thousand thoughts into a single sentence, but that sentence better be the stuff of pure Beckett (which means massive run ons as well as a liberal use of the semi colon over the full stop). Chances are though, you aint one of them. I am. But I am somewhat annoying. So short and sweet for the purposes of illustration. Thus, leading by example. Stop!   
8. Get some days on your product before you review it. Most people dont elly review product for a living so dont really know what they want to say about it. The incentive of FIVE WHOLE POINTS will drive them to review it nonetheless. Theyll screw it up, fill it full of random details that no one looking to purchase the product cares about, and bish bosh! Review done! Theyre often amazed at the flag. Use the product a few times though and i PROMISE YOU, you wont struggle for things to talk about. 
9. You dont need to write an ode to your snowboard boots. Short is fine, but you better err on the side of caution with short reviews and make damn well sure it says 3 or 4 things about the product that i dont know just from looking at the picture/product blurb.

And number 10. Arbitrary stopping point, but this is the absolute main point.

10. The review is not about YOU. Nor is it FOR YOU. Its for TruSnow to help potential customers by providing a direct, hands on description of the product. The product blurb can only tell you so much about a product. People need more information than "this is the greatest board ever!!!" from the manufacturer. Thats where you come in. Your "job" is to take that product blurb, take all those preconceptions you had about the board or whatever, spend some time using it, then RE-EVALUATE those perceptions based upon your hands on experience with the board. The point is for you to help someone who hasnt used the board get an idea of what its about based upon your experience (and other peoples experiences) of the board in order to give them a vague idea of how theyll find the board based on their preconceptions and needs. No review is really going to tell someone the truth about a product, but the more decent reviews, the more chance theyll get an idea of whats going on. 

Making a great review is really damn easy so long as you stick to the product, dont talk about ancillary crap that has nothing to do with it, USE it for a decent amount of time exactly where its supposed to be used and TARGETING it at someone who has no experience of the product, helping them to fill in some of the details and get some kind of idea on where it lives up to the hype as well as where it doesnt. Aim your review at mystery shopper X instead of you and youll find the review pretty much writes itself.

Some of your reviews were for items that you didn't even use at the time of the review, plus you reviewed the Stunt 2 times.  You also reviewed bindings that you "researched" but did not actually use.  Plus a review of a magazine subscription.  Any time I see "I haven't even taken these on a mountain yet" the word SPAM magically appears in my head... I can see why your reviews were spammed.  I don't think you have a leg to stand on with your complaint about being banned from reviews.

Yeah i think this review system is awesome too, it benefits the giver and the receiver at the same time.
Although I do think it would be better for people especially the ones whos actually used the product to write a detailed review for the future buyers. Youd want to find out every good and bad thing about something youre gonna buy before you spend your precious money on it right? Hello. I usually write reviews at Spanish. I could do it in English but do not speak the language and translators are not entirely accurate, that you can see it in this comment in which I used an online translator. In addition, most of the reviews are in English. I think it is more useful to write a review to Spanish that one among hundreds in English. If we observe well, Spain has nearly a thousand users in this forum and also are Latin Americans. I am a client of this trade from 2009 and entertains me give my opinion or advice, as well as others like control reviews without having ever made a purchase on this site. There are also expert users in this forum, which dominate the Spanish and English and can let them work to verify if the reviews on Spanish have an acceptable content. I really like the new layout that adds bike, skateboarding, and all that at the top but it wont let me review the skateboarding section. I click on write a review and it refreshes the page.
Just wondering if it is blocked from reviewing skateboarding stuff or it is a glitch or something is wrong with my computer.

that is also why you shouldnt write a rewview, until you have used the item for a while, very thoroughly! this gives you time to develop your love-hate relationship....

no need to edit, just take the time first to use it first before reviewing it.

I'm afraid to write a review now with the high standards being set. I'm not the greatest wordsmith so next time I do review something I'll try to get an editor and proof reader to make sure it's top notch.  
I think it'd be nice if someone finds a review they don't feel is top notch to maybe write the reviewer and tell them where they could improve it before it gets flagged.  I'm not talking about the obvious- "It looks cool." type review that obviously is just a point grab, but ppl that tried to write a half way decent review but came up short.  Not everyone is good at translating how they feel about a product.  Some ppl are just bad at communication.
This forum is helpful as to what ppl are looking for in a review, but if someone doesn't write a perfect review I don't think we should jump down their throat right off the bat.  Now dude that just tried to lay down reviews (yesterday) for like 5 pair of bindings he obviously never used, that's a different story...

so in the meantime is that what we were trying to accomplish here is say that it IS possible to do a decent review of somethings, but please dont do a "it looks cool, ive got a big head and it fits"

IF, and thats a big if, you decide to review a beanie.... please consider that we all know what a beanie is and what it does (keeps your head warm, derp!), so take some time to tell us something about THIS PARTICULAR beanie and why it is that you like it or dont like it......

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED (DTJ just challenged me in chat to write a bullshit review of a beanie). 

Rightyo, lets pick the first beanie from burton i can find. Why burton? Why the hell not? 

Step 1: read all the other reviews and rewrite the gist... thats too easy though, so ill pick one with hardly any reviews.

Ive had this for a few months now, its not exactly my favourite beanie out there and doesnt really have much going for it, but it does the basics. Its really the other stuff though that makes me give it a bit of a poor score. The first problem i had with it was the stitching in the label. It didnt take long before it started leaving a massive hole right next to it. Thankfully trhe inner layer is still intact though. Im not sure what they do, but this is definitely not the first burton beanie ive had thats done this. Secondly, it did kinda lose  its shape really quickly. I dont have a particularly big head, and i havent used it all that much to be honest, but it feels like im swimming in acrylic here. The design wasnt entirely flattering to begin with (it felt a touch big), but now it looks pretty much shapeless. Finally though, and on a but more positive note, we come to the representation. It looks kinda bland in the picture - a brown beanie with a few yellow x-stitches. But once it arrived i was pleasantly surprised to find the colors were far more vivid and rich than the picture maybe leads you to believe. Its actually looks FAR FAR better in real life! So overall i think its alright for those first few times, but youll probably chuck it in the back of the cupboard once it starts losing its shape. For the price? probably about right if im honest.

Always be extremely suspicious of peoples reviews out there. Its easy to make shit up. And when you have a system that gives you an incentive to do it, well, you know... Keep a critical eye, bullshit isnt as easy to spot as you might think :)

Its actually pretty easy. Here, let me write a review on the rome agent rocker.

I took this board all over my local mountain, its stable, has effortless pop (its got a nice big sweet spot), it can handle pretty much anything you throw at it and it wont wash or fold out on you. I wasnt a big fan of c2 since it comes with mtx (if albeit mellowed down), but romes version of it really makes for a playful fun ride. Sure, its a little less poppier and aggressive than both C2 and R+C and maybe its a bit too high [or low, im making this shit up] to feel like a genuine hybrid, but honestly, they have it DIALED IN for cruising and mucking around. If you want a do it all board with a bit of a lean towards fun and freestyle, or you just want a board that turns the whole resort into a massive park feature without having to worry about washing or the board folding or sliding out, then you HAVE to get on this. Its a sick deck. Hell, i havent even mentioned how smooth it feels in pow. Believe me, when itdrops, youll be smiling your god damned face off! This board is your honest to god do it all quiver killer! it rips, it jibs, it pops, and it slays everything the resort has to offer. Seriously, pick it up now!
 

There you go: Factory assembled generic 'jack of all trades' board review. Way more informative than about 80% of the shit out there, and yet not a bit of it is true or based on anything i actually legitimately know about the board. I have NO IDEA how good it is in ANY terrain. I havent ridden it, none of my friends have. Ive barely read anyone on here talking about it. Its a DODDLE. Of course, if i was sly, id go have a look at the rome page and then throw in some of their buzz words and say some shit like "and it really delivers! you [rephrase market spiel] and it does exactly that!" 

Generic reviewing is a piece of piss. I could game the shit out of this system no problem. But i dont, because im not evil... Instead i tell you on forums all about boards ive never ridden like i have some kind of actual knowledge on them, based entirely on their stats and some reviews other people wrote about them. EXPERT!!! (at spinning a bit of a yarn to be honest) :p

Experience:   Had a chance to take a look at this upclose today at the Snowboarding shop, and I must say I am quite impressed. It looks as though the binding system is a strip? I didn't get a chance to really ask questions, but it looks to be a problem with my standard holes. The board itself, looks amazing. The graphics are bright and vivid, and I tested the flex, it definitly has some pop to it. Retail I think it was 525 today, with 40% off at The Loft. So I would say, try to find this at your local store

Wow... A big slew of bad reviews out this weekend.  
I believe the old Snow4Life has changed his name (not his pic though).  There were two hoody reviews posted by this individual with in a few minutes.  Both of them stated they were his "go to hoody."

I know this sounds stupid but I'd actually love a sock review.  I have great big crazy sized calves and time and time again I buy a sock that's far too narrow for a person that doesn't have chicken legs and has some muscle.

That being said - if there is something TO say about them... then do it.

for example:
If you have muscular calves, these socks may not fit properly.  Maybe try xxx brand instead.

or:
These socks are great for most riding conditions, however they are very thick, so if you prefer thinner socks, or are looking for a sock to wear in the spring, these are not for you.

Etc... the point being... any review should be value adding, and if it's not... don't review it.

Because one word (SPAM) to describe an inadequate review is useless feedback. How does that help an individual improve future reviews? What would be helpful is to actually describe the reason it was marked as spam. Maybe link to this page?

On a similar note, you should talk about brand reviews. I want to see something YOU wrote, not just checking off the options TruSnow gives you. Snow4life and East4life (suspect? they comment on the same threads, similar names and used to have the same location) have shown up on every brand review page I have seen, and this is what they all look like. After seeing them, I went to his page and it appears he has reviewed almost every brand in this way

Haha, he posts questions in pretty much everyone's classified ad and never buys but no surprise since he is like 15 year old and is a point hussy. 

I don't think anybody will flag your review if it is negative even if the person is a hardcore lover of that brand, but they might certainly post a response to your review.

I just started reviewing/posting in the forums.  I like most, if not all, of you can't stand bad reviews.  Personally, I am really trying to make my reviews well stated and full of useful information.

I've been trying to find a new Coat for my wife, and I'd say 95% of female reviews are: "makes you look cute" or a variation thereof, it is really, REALLY frustrating, hence my reasoning for clicking on this thread to begin with.

My problem is this:  Homers gonna' hate on your reviews.  Example:  if I write a negative review about a super-popular item (imagine knocking on the Burton Moto, or the Sierra RCrew), even if it is well stated and nicely informed, the people who think it is the best product ever are going to give me a "no" in a heartbeat.  Pow!  My quality review gets marked as spam, and I look like a tool.

I think only about 5% of all the reviews are trustworthy and legit.  If you click the reviews tab on the community feed its just random names who review 3 items within 5 minutes. It's so aggravating.

Totally agree!  I've been flagging like crazy because their crappy reviews takes up the whole screen and I still see that those people haven't been flagged by the staff or expert members.

You get like 90 something points for changing all of your profile information. He probably just reviewed all of the equipment he owns. Its not like he reviewed 10 pairs of gloves. He reviewed 2 jackets, pants, gloves, a board, and bindings. I have more than two jackets, but they arn't on the site so I can't review them :(   /cry

I personally ignore the star ratings, but perhaps that's just me. And I appreciate that there's at least some transparency in knowing the reviewer is staff and therefore *might* have some bias (though just because they're staff doesn't mean they have to write 5 star reviews. Doug and Donald both gave the regular crew 4 stars.) There's no way you can eliminate all bias from a review, and I'm sure there's plenty you don't know about. Who's to say the stellar review you read on a Rome Pusher isn't some Rome rep using the anonymity of the internet to boost interest in their product? Or that the negative reviews aren't being done in the same fashion? It's really a law of averages, and you have to take every review with a grain of salt. Interesting question: Don't staff reviews artificially manipulate a products score?

The staff at Sie...Trusnow review products sold at Sierra, even Sierra boards. Often, several employees, Doug included, will conduct a review (I'm thinking Sierra boards). There is a conflict of interest here...the staff has a professional obligation to sell their product, but that produces questions about their reliability as objective reviewers.

I'm not calling the staff liars--in fact, I know very well it's their job to sell...and I am confident that they are as honest as possible within the limitations. But it's hard to imagine Doug getting on here review the RC and being like, "Sorry bros, this board is distinctly inferior to competitor reverse camber all mountain boards, etc." or even just a lukewarm, "Eh, this board is ok, but not great."

Yet, the star rating from staff are calculated in the product's score. So Doug, for ex., gives the Stunt 5 stars. The Stunt may well deserve 5 stars and Doug is certainly more qualified than I to rate it, but since it seems like Doug CAN'T get on and give it, say, 3 or 2 stars it seems like the staff are forced to be a kind of product sunshine-pumpers.

It might be the case that if Doug can't give a product a good rating, he simply doesn't rate it all. But that can't possibly be publicly helpful. After all, how are we to know which products the staff has not rated because they haven't tested it and which ones they haven't rated because it kinda sucks?

mmm that's strange because I've left reviews with this kind of information and I find them under my "spam" reviews, granted all of them may not have carried your desired weight but when I purchase a product from your site and I leave a review on after use and it gets marked as spam and taken down it seems counter intuitive for me to bother wasting my time on them when I only get points taken away and lose the ability to leave a review which has happened. It's funny I sign on in January and I have lost lots of points and apparently ALL my reviews marked as spam.

I don't see anything wrong with the "I want this item" option if used appropriatly. Could be possible that someone has used an item from a friend or demo day and has a worthy review. Durability and fit.  I have some Eesa and Forum socks, loved the fit but they tore at the ankle seams after less than half a season (probably less than 5 days apiece).  I'm personally partial to Smartwool Ph.D socks.  There is value in reviewing those things... it's just most people don't take it seriously and just try to stockpile the points.

I'm just getting back into snowboarding after a 5-6 year span of only going occasionally and found some of the reviews to be a big help in finding out about what gear was going to be right for me. Then I saw a lot of complete garbage that had nothing to offer for insight at all.

This site is so awesome when used for more than just points. It'd be nice if more people took the time and effort to write quality reviews to help out their fellow boarders.

Negativity FTW!  I actually did see Underarmour snow socks at the store and they didn't seem  bad at all and pretty thick too, well at least more than the Wigwams but not as thick as the Burton.  I'm actually thinking of picking up a pair of Underarmour since their coldgear hasn't disappointed me so I'm sure their socks are rocking as well and TS is letting me keep the socks and refunding me for them plus a little something something but that's for shipping me the wrong size and color on a few pairs.  Wink 

Price should have nothing to do with the topic on hand because then you could say people shouldn't review locks, scrapper and wax because they're such low priced items, but there's a ton of threads requesting for reviews for these so called low priced items.  The only item I think is useless in term of reviews is stickers.

This is a good point.  How much time do you need to have on a board before you can post a useful review on a board?  I will hit up Burton Demo Days this year and probably test 15 boards.  Obviously over the three day period I will only experience so much variation in conditions.  Is it still helpful to write a review on a board that you spend 4 hours on or 2 hours or even 1 hour.  The first time I rode the Custom X I thought this is the best bombing stick I have ever ridden.  Two years later my opinion of the board has not changed.  I think it can be helpful to the others as long as you state the conditions you tested the board in and what paces you put the board through specifically.  What do you guys think?

why are you reviewing a sock to begin with? that practically has 0 value. do something useful like gloves or clothing that actually have some comparivative value

Personally, I think the most effective reviews are negative ones about the product, althought not all the time.  the snow extreme is awesome but one of the other ones is rubbish

I like my Lorpen socks a lot more expensive though @ 30 bucks a pop
my fox river socks also do well
and
they all do much better than my burton buffer socks

Well from what I can see from the socks that I bought and if I knew they were like this then I wouldn't have bought them.  The Burton is thick and warm so I give it that but it does have a lint problem after its first use and mind you it wasn't even after a wash plus the fit seems tight at first but at the end of the day, the sock is pulled all the way down and I don't have thin legs either.  The Wigwams and Snow Pros had awesome reviews so I bought a few different pairs, they're thin as hell and aren't even warm plus they slip off like crazy because the fitting is so huge.  People's reviews just seems to be too generic and saying things that have already been said and leaving out descriptive things that may affect a person's decision to buy the product.  I would like to see more negative reviews because all this glorified positive reviews are all a sham.

yeah, there is really a need for this, lve been seeing crappy reviews for some time and flagging them. But its so overwhelming that l cant flag them fast enough. MAYBE YOU GUYS SHOULD MAKE ME A EXPERT for flagging =).

Pppl really need to stop taking advantage of the free stuff because it will come back at you and you will lose your points and sooner, the ability to even write/post reviews and posts

I actually don't mind reviews for those if they are good and descriptive because I bought 5 different pairs of socks from here and I am truly disappointed in them and it doesn't help that people were only saying "good socks!"  "warm socks!" "dry socks!"

You should have to put a minimum of 100 words in a review, and trusnow shouldn't allow you to review crap like socks and things like that

Thank You (captain obvious) to those who state "You dont have to buy from Trusnow to post a review".

The Point is that you need to be posting a quality, informative review that actually helps others decide on a particular product.

The point I was trying to make was that in addition to weak/junk reviews, we also have way too many reviews that are vague and not helpful from people who have somehow come in contact with said product but coincidentally have never made a purchase from Trusnow EVER.

Believe me, it is quite obvious when someone is posting a BS review just to gain site points.

A review should info others what you can't tell/see from the photos or product description.

Also, not everything needs a review, like stickers or gift card.

You don't have to buy something from trusnow to write a review about it, that's absurd.  If you own the product, no matter where you got it from, you can write a review about it because you have experience with it.  It's not like the products trusnow sells are different.

Haha, I agree!  It's always she likes the pretty color, she didn't complain, she loves it, I bought it for her, blah blah.  They could at least get more input from their girls because I do on my brothers' gears.

That's fine if you rode it, but a ton of these reviews it's my friend bought this board and it looks awesome!  No joke...they didn't even ride the board yet they're still reviewing it.


You know I really love the reviews of womens products on this site.  There's a lot where the bf/husband/significant other writes it and contributes nothing but she likes the graphics and she didn't fall or she didn't complain about the cold.  It's the first board I purchased for her and she loves it. 

How is that a legitimate review?  I hate reviews like that because I know these guys will never use the product and have no first hand knowledge of said product.

Maybe the amount of product reviews in a given time period is a bit too liberal. I mean if someone isnt buying jack sh1t from Trusnow and they have tons of product reviews--come on.

You are right, this should be common sense, but then again the points rewarded for reviews kind of marginalize the credibility of each post.  So it comes down to the community members claiming that the review was "Not Helpful" so that the review can be marked as spam, and then (I think) the user will not be awarded the points for their review.  I understand that an in-depth insightful review takes time and effort, but for the sake of every snowboarder out there please make the effort!

A Review has apurpose!!

The purpose of your review is to give others a betterunderstanding how the equipment might relate to their performance and uses outon the hill. If your review lacks depth that will allow other to find it helpfulit may be considered to be spam.

 

Here are some steps to follow when preparing to write aproduct review:

  •       Test Your Product
  •       Product Performance Evaluation
  •       Review Specifics
  •       Compare Products
  •       Be Specific and the Extras

 

Test Your Product

Product Testing andUse

A quality written review comes form properly testing yourequipment. Make sure that you have had sufficient time to test the product andcan adequately make comments based on multiple aspects of the equipmentsperformance, durability and best used application.


Conditions andTerrain

Make sure to test the equipment in as many types of terrainas possible to fully understand how the product will handle different areas of themountain and changing snow conditions; jumps, jibs, pipe, powder, ice, chop andgroomers.

 

Product Performance Evaluation

Product Performance

Test all aspects of performance of the product. How does ithandle carving vs. basic skidded turns? Test a board's flex and pop by doingollies, butters, presses and stay in tune to how it pops of the lip of a jumpand handles the landing. Did you get a chance to take it off a jump whilespinning? What size of jump?

 

Review Specifics

Personalize yourReviews

When building on aspects of performance of a board youshould include your weight, height, boot size and ability level. Thisinformation is very relevant to what riders can expect from the equipment. A100lb rider on a 155cm board is going to have much different performance than a200lb rider on that same 155cm board. Your review should allow the review tounderstand a little bit about how you affect the products performance.

 

Durability

For products that you have had for any length of time, youcan start to build on your review by discussing aspects of the productsdurability. Make sure to include the estimated number of days that you haveused the product.

 

Customize yourReviews

Different styles of products will need the review catered tothat style of product. All your soft gear should be tested in a number ofdifferent weather environments. How do does the waterproofing hold up? Is itbetter for warm spring days or cold winter nights? For boards make sure to hiton how well the base holds wax and holds a tune.

 

Compare Products

A great way to gauge performance is by comparing one productto another. This is also a great way for the readers of your review to get abit more of a bearing as it relates to on-snow performance. If you arecomparing a similar product from one years model to the next it allows forpeople to better understand how the new technologies relate to performance.

 

Be Specific and the Extras

Be Specific

When writing your reviews don't over generalize. Keep your explanationsof your points of view very specific to situations and terrain. Knowing that aboard was tested on a number of kink rails is a lot more info than saying that youtested the board on jibs.

The Extras

And the final and least prevalent aspect of the review ishow you liked the graphics and colors of the product.  It can be a nice touch to your review, but make sure tocover the more important aspects of the review first.

 

Quick Tips:

  • Keep it performance based.
  • Your review should be based on how the product performs in avariety of conditions and terrain types.
  • Reviews should help others relate to the experiences thatthey might have on that same equipment.
  • Try to be objective, have a point and base your review onreal experiences you have had with that given product.

 

Brand Reviews

If you plan on writing a brand review it should be objectiveand non-biased!! Base the review on real situations you have had with the givenBrand's products, customer service and Brand interactions. A brand reviewshould allow a reader to understand more about given company’s products andindustry interactions. If you are new to a Brands Products you might just wantto wait until you write up your brand review for this company.
