Same thing happened to me with my forces, went to a local shop that carries Union and they had some spare ones they hooked me up with. If they don't have any c3-shop now carries them for like $5. Keep checking them though, mine still work themselves loose.

softer/less responsive boots/bindings allow more freedom of movement and may not kick your ass for mistakes. you are able to manipulate the relation between your legs/feet and board more than you can with stiffer gear. it really is all preference though. i personally like same boot/binding for every type of riding, and i change the board per conditions, but other people are different.

forward lean is all preference. most people don't use it because they think it's uncomfortable (which it isn't when you take a minute to get used to it) or they don't even understand what it is or what it does. i think it's less necessary for the type of riding you want to do, but again, it's all preference. i'd suggest riding with none, then add one notch, see how it feels, and adjust up or down from there.

Also, is their a suggested forward lean setting for beginner riders?

I'm leaning to riding more park/rails and i'm not sure what to set the forward lean to.

Depends on what you prefer in order to establish whether or not it benefits you.

Some people like "softer" boots/bindings to ride park and rails because they want a less responsive ride.

If all you do is send it every run and carve like hard-booter Bob, you might want something stiff to maximize edge control.

Preference mostly, but softer usually makes a better park binding. Union uses less material towards the top of the highback so it makes it easier to grab and such.

Generally the higher the number the stiffer. The stiffer something is generally means quicker response/more control.

Having one "soft" and one "hard" would seem a little counter intuitive in my opinion, but that's just me. Basically, you get what you want for your personal riding style. Whatever works for you.

Look at the history of the Force. The only "colors" they keep in the line every year are black and white, because they're staples and go with everything. If they kept the rest of the line the same 2 or 3 colors every year it'd get pretty boring, especially when trying to build some frankenbindings.

well I'd choose the SL just because I prefer unions, and I'm not too into rome binders, although they are definitely one of the top companies out there. It depends what you want in a binding I guess. The SL should be a little more responsive and noticeably lighter, and a bit higher end, but that's not to say there's anything wrong with the S90.

I totally agree, I like the funky colourway... I was hoping Union would come out with another all yellow Force... they had it in the past, but they took that colour out for some reason. Not a high seller I guess?

Maybe they're just changing things up. I bet they will be back sometime in the future.

Cyan's look really good on the 151 Reverse Crew... my choice in the current line-up would probably be green or magenta, they stand out the most. The green would clash with my Stunt though, so probably the magenta.

What am I saying, I'm going SL, that'd be funky! I wish the two colours were flipped though, they'd pop more!

SLs are really not that stiff. With the regular stage 3 base, they may actually be a hair less responsive than the force just like the atlas. In the past their highback was actually softer than the force as well, but I haven't been able to check out the new ones in person yet. Either way, they're nothing like c60s. I had a pair of 2009 ride betas for a little bit as well and those are stiffer by a little. I feel like ride's bindings run stiffer in general, based on what they say about their intended use.

The point of the SL is basically to be for a force rider who wants something that's higher tech and significantly lighter. The charger is the stiff binding in the line.

Guys, just wanted your opinions, Force SL, would you say this is too stiff to take into the park with a Stunt? Do you guys have any other suggestions?

I currently have Ride Beta MVMNT on my Stunt and I don't find the flex an issue when I go in the park.

When I tried Salomon Chief bindings on my Stunt, that was WAY too stiff for the park. Too stuff in general actually. Even my Burton C60 were more comfortable. I wouldn't want that to happen again with the Force SL.

Any other recommendations? Rome S90? Cartel? (I don't think the coupon will work on the Cartel though)

the only difference between 2012 and 2013 forces is the ankle strap, to my knowledge. last year's was their older direct connect system where the strip of plastic runs straight through the center of the strap, and this year's have the new core (cored out oval, better pressure distribution). they're not asym like the ones on the atlas or contact pro, but it's essentially the same strap.

a size 10 burton shrinkage boot should fit in a M/L no problem so there must be some other reason it doesn't seem to work as well as you'd expect.

Thanks for your input everyone seems to be having little to no issues with it, thought I was being paranoid. I'm surprised that you say that the buckles are crappy.. they tout how their buckles are whatever injected to keep it strong yet light.. You aren't the only one too.. plus I know that they've had issues with their springs. Thought the would have resolved this issue and if it were burton, they would have replacements. Union will probably ask you to buy it. This is where they fall short.

Spens, did they change anything from this years forces and last years. (11/12-12/13). I was trying on a pair of Burton Rulers in size 10 and they seemed super tight in the shop's 12/13s. I went home maxed out my binding straps and heelcup and I'd be baffled if they didn't work. It looks they would definitely work. Did they adjust the ladder size or something?

Didn't know that if u didn't have the 3-4 teeth thing it would cause pinching or pressure points to be pressed. but I knew that the buckle should be closer to the end of your ladders and not bottomed out. great vid, good to catch up and check up my settings before going out this season.

My Atlas's last year started out not letting go worth a hoot. Espessially by Left (forward) binding... then, all of the sudden, they started popping right on cue. I think they just take some break in period. My ankle straps have always released right on command as well.

the point is for maximizing response and comfort. union says you don't need to rotate because the highbacks flex torsionally (twisting), but calf bite isn't really the reason you rotate in the first place.

un-rotated, when you lean back into a heelside turn and press into the highbacks, you're doing so at an angle, where the highbacks flex more, so you are losing response. when you rotate so they're parallel, you are pressing straight back into them, where they are more supportive/stiffer. it can help with calf bite too, although like i said, that's not the main reason.

The very first binding setup video I saw told me to rotate them to be flush to the heel edge and I've done it ever since. Some of my friends say they don't bother. Is it really just a preference? Same here! I had mine all the way to the front even though I was using it as a frontal toe cap. I moved mine back one slot and realized it's now able to rotate farther forward!

I was playing with some older Datas and newer SL and noticed it's the same for both, in my experience. The toe buckle sticks a bit compared to the ankle strap buckle, but no issues grabbing them from the bottom and just pulling them off with my gloves on. The Datas have 50-70 days. The SL <10days.

But I have an old pair of contacts that one buckle sticks really bad.

yeah I've read a lot of complaints that they're sticky

i'm finding there isn't much to grab hold of, good and bad thing.

sticky ratchet complaints are common. i find it easy if you kind of slap it open quick and hard, instead of grabbing it, lifting up, and trying to release it. i rock my straps tight and sometimes the toe buckles want to stick, but they get better as they "break in." i've never had any actual issues with them, but some people are anal about little things like that and hate them.

I just got to playing with some Union binders and it got me thinking.

Those of you who use or have Union bindings, do you find it annoying or a little difficult unbuckling the toe strap?

I was finding that I couldn't really get a good hold of the buckle, couldn't comfortable get a finger under to pull up on it. It doesn't have much of a latch. These were the 2013 models..I think they have same kind on the older models as well.

When I go to it, all I get is "Dropping October 2012." It was annoying on October 10, Frustrating on Oct 20, now... straight inaccurate on Nov. 1st.

yeah definitely, I found out about CBI a few times while browsing the internet and from a couple of members here on TS, kept forgetting about where you could ship to and pick up. Its a great option if you can't get items to ship over but downside is the possible hassle with boarder police and the drive down through Niagara. I usually just make a trip of it though.

Go for the SLs! or another pair, maybe from Burton.

I'm looking to replace my Ride Beta on my Sierra Stunt... would you go for 2013 Union Force at reg price $199 or 2012 Union Force SL on sale for $159?

One year difference but according to my research, the SL packs in more value with the lighter and stiff tech. I'm generally a sucker for price point so doesn't the MSRP of $259 for the SL mean it's "better"?

I already have a Burton Vapor with C60 for my lightweight pow and pipe setup. I'm looking for something to pair well with my Sierra Stunt for buttering and ground tricks and perhaps some boxes in the park.

it's a more basic, lighter, and slightly less responsive binding than the force. personally i would stick with the force, but given your riding situation, they should be fine. as long as you get the relative response you prefer, most bindings are going to "perform" well enough for you.

I originally was going to try and wait to find some used Forces for sale. But after finding a good deal for some new (2011/2012) Flites, I kind of want to go with the Flites.

I would rather have the Force, but I think the Flites would be great.

I haven't been boarding in a few years so its not like Im going to be able to get right back into it right away. And also I won't be doing a lot of riding this season, maybe 5 or 6 trips if I'm lucky.

I would feel better buying new from a store so if I have any problems I can return them. Or if I have any issues covered under warranty I would be covered.

yes. they are both good bindings in terms of technology. the contact pro's upgraded features are there to make a performance difference, not to be "superior." think of it this way.. the pro is for someone who likes the feel of the contact base, but wants a little more "performance" out of it, most likely meaning a more responsive binding.

the most responsive binding in the line is probably the chargers, but i haven't ridden them yet. other than that, it's gotta be the force, and maybe the MC since it also has the carbon injected atlas base like the charger, but the charger has a stiffer highback.

the best bang for your buck for a more responsive binding would be the force, and like he^ said, a little forward lean goes a long way.

The whole line up will do that. It's called forward lean.

There's nothing such as a best choice. It's preference. If money isn't an issue, the MC Metafuse.
If you're strapped for cash, DLX will do the trick.

All my bindings so far have been Unions. Ive only have 2 pair of bindings ever but whatever. Ive have contacts and DLXs. Never had any major problems with them. I will probably always ride and recommend Unions

atlas baseplate is a bit larger than the force surface area wise.. just a heads up... i got l/xl atlas last year to go on last years 159 BSOD and the bottoms of the basetrays overhang the sides of the board on toe and heel... where as l/xl forces fit fine. My stance is set at 23.5-24 and 15/-15... needless to say i dont ride the atlas on the bsod. work great on the 160 hovercraft tho

agreed, they're between the contact and force. the main thing i notice with the pro is the base difference from the force. i really like the stiff, solid, damp base of the force. it leaves me feeling secure and grounded. the contact pro base is the same design as the regular contact, but it's carbon injected so slightly stiffer and lighter, and the padding has multiple densities (some is a little stiffer) and leaves the base a little less "loose" overall. that being said, i still noticed too much side to side flexibility with the pro and ultimately it's not the binding for me because of that, but that's just a preference thing. for someone with contacts who is looking for something slightly more responsive, the pro is a good choice, as is the atlas. if you liked the force, you could also go with those, or if you like them but want a little more padding and a little less weight, go atlas.

IMO the forces are a bit more responsive than the contact pros. I would place the pros between the contacts and the forces for sure.. more cushion in the base than the force as well.. higher tweakerbility for when you get nasty on those murdermittenmethods

Take a picture and post if you can. metal chipping sounds serious, the paint... well sounds like your SOL, or paint it as miked suggested... what's that method called... where you energize the metal and spray a powder coat and it just clings like a magnet to it.

Has anyone had any problems with the toe ratchets on this years forces? I got a pair this year, probably rode on them 20 times and both toe ratchets are acting weird. I wanna say its the springs cause they both stay in the upright position and just sound really loose.

His bindings are I would say about a 7 on a flex scale. By no means soft. Plus board/binding = same flex isnt necessary

Thanks Meaty. I did watch those vids but they just talk about the baseplates. i'm looking for overall weight of the binding.

It would make sense to have the info readily available when you click on the product. ie Specs

and if they're gonna talk about weight of baseplates then give the weight for all the parts, straps, highbacks.

no clue what gyuva is actually asking. I hear forces work well all around, mountain, pow and doable in the park. some say that the contacts work okay for them all mountain some say there's not enough response.

the pros arent "soft." it's the padding that alters the response since the base can kinda "roll" a little VS the force for example.

to me they basically feel less responsive side to side which i personally didn't like. i ride forces with 3 extra clicks of forward lean and straps as tight as i can get them. if you ride with loose straps then you're already getting a loose feel especially side to side, so i don't think you'd have a problem with contact pros, but you never know til you try it

my guess is that even with the "softer" base, the design of the contact base is what makes it looser than a malavita (81% padding underneath), especially side to side. that being said, i haven't ridden the new malavitas with the hinge thing.

Hey spenser wouldn't the CPs be closer to the Malivitas than the Atlas. I realize they are both close but with the vita's 11% fiberglass baseplate construction wouldn't that give it a losser feel than the Atlases? More towards the CPs?

if you're familiar with burton bindings...

force is like a cartel (i think they gave it a 7/10). solid stiffer base, highback is stiff straight back but mid-stiff torsionally

atlas is maybe like a malavita/cartel (probably would give it a 6/10). close to the force but the base is a hair more flexible, still pretty solid though.. but one thing i noticed was that the atlas heel padding is all the way through the baseplate and has a lot of give if you push down on it, whereas the force base is solid at the heel.. you would get a little more response out of the force base, and i say that from experience, owning both. highback is basically the same flex.

contact is like........ a softer binding in the line (cobrashark or something) but with a loose feel side to side (i think they gave them a 3/10). it's not that the base is really much softer, but there's padding all around underneath so the base can kinda move or "roll" a little and it gives it a less responsive looser feel especially side to side. good binding if you tweak a ton and don't really care for or need a ton of response for your riding. their highback is less aggressive than the force but it doesn't flex a whole lot differently.

contact pro is between the contact and force/atlas. same contact base and padding design, but carbon injected instead of fiberglass so it's a hair stiffer and lighter. the padding also has multiple densities but overall it's stiffer, so the base is less "loose" and has less "roll" than the contact, but is still not as stiff or responsive as the force or atlas base. their highback flexes relatively the same as well.

the team highback looks like the atlas shape but it's not cored out. it flexes like a force highback. stiff straight back, medium stiff torsionally. in general basically all their highbacks are like that with just slight variances, if you ask me, and mostly it's when the torsional flex is softer like the team/force back VS atlas. i think the flight back got a lot softer though. anyway...

Looking at Union's website at the Contact, Force and Atlas but none of them mention how stiff they are. How do I know which ones to pick? Also, the Holden colab (which they sell here on TruSnow as well as those Pabst and other custom team bindings say they have the TEAM highback which I also can find no information on flex and stiffness.

i don't get whats the hype about PBR... personally don't think its all that great of a beer besides it being cheap. anyways, besides the beer i don't think these aren't bad looking-- would go perfect with stepchilds latchkey board

the pro is less loose. the padding around the base is stiffer in general so it doesn't "roll" quite as much. still a looser binding side to side but not as much as the contact. edge to edge they feel like your standard mid flex binding to me. the base is also carbon injected instead of fiberglass, so it's a hair stiffer and lighter. the new ankle strap is way better as well. i think they're also the 2nd lightest binding in the line?

to be honest looking at the snowboarder.eu video for the 12/13 line,...I'm not feeling a lot of the colours in their whole line other than that hot pink they have, lol

the last few years were better..

yea, the blue came out to being a really solid looking blue-- not all bright and colorful like the pictures online. The blue flites this year are pretty good looking though for some reason even though i THINK they have the same blue.

c3 seems to put theirs up with the current year. their 2012 demos/samples just went up this week and that seems to be normal for them. i doubt you'll be able to buy any of the 2013s til this time next year, or maybe in the fall. they don't release them to the public for a reason...

Forces work...so do Contact Pros. Cartels work good too...Malavitas, Triads...etc. Which Missions do you have? That would make a difference. I'm lazy to look it up, but the newer Missions are like an older Cartel. More comfortable gel like strap vs just some foam/rubber padding.

Comfort is personal as well as how it fits your boot. If you have shitty uncomfortable boots, the most luxuriously comfortable binding will not fix uncomfortable boots.

I went from 2011 burton cartels to 2012 union forces. Forces are way better, to cut to the point. I have a pair of 2009 burton missions on a old 07 deck right now. You will be impressed with the Forces, easy on your feet, yet have a good secure feeling. I use them in the park and on powder days. Best all around bindings in my 13 years of riding!

I was thinking the same thing if you go a page back or two and read up you'll find that there isn't too much user info on it other than it's light and has a softer flex than the forces.

Yep, you have to have at least 4 teeth "showing" on your ladder when they are ratcheted down tight. Learned that on the set up vid.

Im still having the same problem and theyre not all the way down.

if you didn't like them before, you'll probably like the new ones. if you did like them before, you may also like the new ones, but you could likely prefer the old ones. depends on your boot toe shape and other factors. i prefer the older ones.

I REEEEEAAAALLLLLY like them. Yes I put emphasis on that I like them. All other year of forces I've had or tried my toe strap would slide off here and there. I have yet to have an issue with the new one. Fits like a glove and stays in place for sure!

I've never known DK to have a pro model that wasn't Vann's or Nike.

I've seen a few pairs of the new bindings up at the hill already this year.

Anyone else road the 2011/2012 Danny Kass bindings? My buddy just got them and the colors are sick! They certainly pop out and are super bright. I am not sure if I agree with the price tag though. It also seems that his 32 boots do not fit well with it. Anyone else ridden them?

i like the new ankle strap a lot more too, but flux ankles are still better for me so i switched to those again.

i'll have to try the atlas vs force again. the atlas doesn't give me that loose feeling i don't like, but i think the base is still a tad softer than the force. also feels a little more padded, not that i have a problem with forces. mostly it's in the heel since the atlas doesn't have hard plastic under that area.

yeah that's pretty much it. rad bindings and i liked them during preseason for untouched pow and the much less tracked pow on opening day when i got a full day on them with the fish, but yesterday i was riding charlie and just felt so loose compared to what i wanted. rode it today with forces and maaaaaan what a difference. reminds me of why forces are my go-to binding. so much more secure on the board like i like. just a preference... contact pro is not the most ideal binding for me personally.

they are a tiny bit softer overall but still a solid mid flex binding like the force. the highback is a little softer too. to me the base fees solid but more padded and i'm really liking them. the new ankle strap is also a good improvement.

i've been getting pain on the ball of my foot too and i've been riding with the ramps all the way in this year. i'm going to move mine all the way out for tomorrow and see if it changes anything. the atlas and contact pro toe ramps have more kick to them than forces, and those are the two bindings i've been riding this year and not forces.. givin' me ideas, thanks

with my 8.5 burton rulers with shrinkage, i think i actually had the heelcup on forces at 2, toe ramp in the middle. with 8.5 zoom forces it's the same. on the contact base i have it at 1.

Good news, I have finally pretty much solved my toe cap issue on my Atlases.

Spencer's idea to move witch "hole" the straps were coming out of worked for me.

Basically, they go from the forward position on the outside of the binding, to the rear position on the inside of binding. I did have to scoot back the strap adjustment to the last hole (the shortest possible setting) to compensate, but the cap stayed put like a champ the other day with no real pressure points. Weird thing is, the right binding didn't need this magic fix... it's holding steady on its own.

New question: Where do you guys put your toe ramps?? I put my toe ramp all the way back, thinking it would give me more leverage. It ended up causing severe pain in the ball of the foot area! I moved it back to the middle setting and the pain pretty much went away.

I wear a size 8.5 boot (Burton boot, so it has shirinkage tech). I moved the heel cup in to "1" and put my toe ramp in the middle of the three hole options. Does this sound about right to you folks? Both are in the middle, for a boot size that's in the middle of the M/L range.

HERE IT IS!

cut it out on a half inch thick piece of whatever material you are going to use, and then cut that from the side to make it two pieces, quarter inch thick. this will ensure exact symmatry. or just cut two from quarter inch material. when you sand it, leave the thicker edge (the shorter straight edge) still a quarter inch thick, sand the rest into whatever degree of cant you want. don't make the thin edge as thin as you can tho, you definatly still want some thickness there. this might be confusing so if you don't get it ask me.

make sure the measures are correct when you print it out. the longer straight edge is 7" 6/16 and the width at the widest point is 1" 5/16. the shorter straight edge will not fit into the side of the binding perfectly because the binding is slightly curved there, and the skinnier end won't completely conform to the curve it's supposed to either, but it pretty much fills all the area that's there. and the front will be completely flush, not sticking out one bit. my forces are l/xl.

i just drew a template and cut them with a band saw. then i sanded them with a circle sander (not sure if that's what it's called) to make them wedges

the team binding this year is basically the atlas. team highback though, which as far as we know is just an atlas highback that's not cored out.

as far as how they ride, i guess all i can notice is that the atlas base is a little more padded. response wise, they feel similar enough to me and i've ridden them on the same board to tell the difference.

i like the look of my new teams more, but the force teams are also rad.

you can't be wrong about what you like more or less than another thing. i personally like both a lot. forces were my go-to binding for years but i really, really like the new atlas base and the team highback. the new ankle strap is a lot better too.

Good point. What do you mean by feel looser? wow when I typed that out my mind went straight to the gutter... I'm thinking the Flites will be more responsive than the contacts.

So in terms of responsiveness I would say. Force> Flite> Contacts

hence stiffer binding. (wow i'm on a roll)

They you will most likely like the new one's better if you had problems with the old ones. I like the old ones better. Never had a problem with them. Are you sure you have them on right? that little black strip should be touching the boot (the top) not hanging off. Spenser has a pic somewhere in here on how to properly have it set up.

same binding model, but it was called the force SL up until this year, it was a stage 2 (force) baseplate that was cored out and injected with carbon instead of fiberglass and also had a different highback. the binding just got an upgrade and since the base is not stage 2 anymore, they can't call it the force so now it's just the SL. technically yeah those are two different bindings now just cause the 2012 has an upgrade, but it's like saying the cartel is no longer the cartel since they switched the highback or changed the baseplate or whatever.

the purple rains are just a limited binding, it's not an SL. it's a force baseplate with the old SL highback though, yes.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is there a noticeable weight difference with carbon injected baseplates? I'm assuming not, but I've shot myself in the foot for assuming before.

Hey Spenser,

Do you have any info on this year's SL's. I've been looking at them and am not sure what to think about them. Last year they were force sl's this year i'm not sure what its based off of or how different they are. Care to enlighten me about them. I was really interested in last year's force SL's but they sold out super quick, so was waiting for this year, but since they don't seem to be based off the forces, i'm not sure what to think.

i just got the 2012 union forces in the neon green and they are awesome! i rode them this past weekend and they are honestly the sickest bindings i have ever owned! They are so comfortable and they feel like nothing is even there. I will always make union bindings my first choice when i am looking to get new bindings. Has anyone rode the contacts? how are they?

Only one day on the Atlases thus far, but man I'm stoked on them. They are just made differently than other bindings. Lack of adjustments? No biggie, because the bindings conform to your boot so much right out of the box. Comfort? How about the lack of a baseplate, and the highbacks that flex right up to you, no matter how your boot is in them. Weight? Can't even feel them... a noticeable reduction from my Ride SPi. Responsiveness? I rode on hardpack/ice in the am, and 4 inches of fluff in the pm... with zero forward lean adjustments needed. The bindings quite literally conformed to the conditions and my style.

most shops that have things really under control will base their orders on previous sales trends and numbers

union does sell out that fast. they have been growing by around 50% for the past few years but from last year to this year they grew almost 80%. at the same time, they fill their orders and don't get excessive. orders are met, people get their bindings, and there is still a demand. they know how to sell through everything and produce enough to satisfy in general, but keep the demand and not oversaturate.

basically all the shops that carry a brand send in their prebooks. the company gets all those orders and fills those numbers, so if there's a total of 2000 forces in l/xl in black, they make that. if there's a total of 2 s/m contacts, they'll make that. so on and so forth. once the bindings are made and get to union, they ship out to fill shop orders and that's it. like i said, anything they have left over is from shops that cancelled orders or went out of business between prebook time in january and shipping in october, basically.

they produce the numbers they get from shop prebooks in january, after buying a certain amount of material the year before with which they build the bindings. if no shops order s/m, none get made. if they get orders for a total of 100 units, they make that. any stock left is if a shop cancels, goes out of business, or something like that. they are currently sold out last i knew. if sierra doesn't have them by now then they may just not be getting them, but i personally have no idea if that's the actual case, there could be a reason they aren't up yet.

they did have some delays with other bindings like those with the atlas base, but i don't know about the bases that come in s/m like contacts.

both. it's not HEAVY but it's one of the heaviest in their line if not the heaviest. i'd call it a perfectly average binding by today's standards and i don't consider them heavy at all, the rest are just extra light. contact pro is the second lightest after the MC if i remember correctly, and the MC is the lightest binding on the market at the moment.

all are constructed well too, i just mean the force is the beefiest binding, and their flagship binding for a reason. it's a tank because it's not a crazy light binding and there's not as much coring out, it's just a solid, damp product. again, not to say others aren't solid and damp, the force is just............ well i don't know what else to say

well all i'm saying is i definitely like a more responsive binding, but nothing crazy stiff. i like edge to edge response but i like mobility to move side to side, like when you poke an ollie or tailgrab or whatever. the force and contact pro both give that to me. i've been riding forces for the last 4 years solid and have had them at times each year since union's second year in business. anyway, rode all day long on the fish with contact pros and i always had the response i like, so...

don't get them confused for being like contacts. the baseplate in the pro is carbon injected so it's stiffer and lighter, and the stiffer padding around the binding definitely makes a difference. the highback is rad too and the new ankle strap is tits.

I agree, my experience with Contacts a few years back "they were great for park but when I decided to ride the mountain I really did not like them. So I sold them and went with another pair of Force's"

Yeah ok which one should i go with. Should i get some forces or contact or contact pros. I ride all park and i havent had any expierence with less responsive bindings than rome s90 bindings. Would it be better if i were to get contacts for park for the less response. Im pretty sure it wouldnt make that much of a difference.

probably didn't have them adjusted right. i rode mine all day today for opening day, and had been riding them all preseason, and never had one single issue whatsoever. but i also have them adjusted right....

I'll admit... I watched the Union set up video. I know, 10 years of boarding and I watched a newbie vid, but their set up was a bit different than other bindings I've used.

they grew 78% this year from last year i believe (if i remember the exact number correctly), and the few years prior they were growing by about 50% give or take. pretty much unheard of. and the cool thing is, they are growing because of demand, not just producing more, and if you ask me their full demand is not even met, if you count everyone who wants them or tries to find them to buy. they are killing it.. doing it right.

So my right (uphill) toes capped correctly, but were really hard to release. I guess they're cinched down too far. My left kept popping up over the boot, so I had to ride it as a strap. It wasn't that annoying or anything, but I just have no idea why it would do that.

Last year there were plenty of Teams floating around the web so Union decreased the number they produced this year to make them a very limited binding for their team and shop kids....love the look of this years Team too.......

i have them on my fish.

super light binding, responsive edge to edge, but you get a little more play side to side because of the baseplate design. i like them a lot. i like a pretty responsive binding and i use a little extra forward lean, and they have been feeling fine since i've been riding them. i don't do any park, just pow mostly, but i feel like i want more response in pow than i do just jibbing around if i ever do it. they're "holding up" great for me so far.

well as for cheaper bindings the s90s are the best you can get. i have never tried out the s90s but alot of people on here love them. I wouldnt ever consider last years burton customs or missions compared to the s90s. i had customs 3 years ago and their a waste of money your much better off spending more on good bindings or getting the s90s. also you could wait and save up money for union forces they are awesome bindings, my second favoirte behind rome390s, and are well worth the $. maybee look for a blackfriday/ cybermonday sale on thouse but that could be hard to find a place that will discount thouse. so either get the s90s or find a way to get some extra cash for forces.

ive been interested in getting union bindings since last season. my budget is pretty tight and I cant go too crazy so I can only afford the flite or dlx, but I also am looking into the Rome S90 because the price is so good right now, as well as the burton custom or missions from last year. If you're gonna go through all of the trouble to ride a stupid ass Burton board with a not-compatible-with-anything-f**king-normal mounting system, then what's another $15-20 for the discs to mount your bindings on there? it depends. they might, they might not. it's meant to be an accessory you buy. it costs them money to make so it's normal to charge, but at least it's not expensive.

for shops to get them, i think we get a set per every X amount of bindings we order, i forget what the number is, but if we want more after that we do have to pay a wholesale cost for them, so it's not like everywhere gets them for free and then sells them for pure profit.

sorry, forgot to answer that part of the question. union has a disk now made for the channel, but it's ONLY for burton channel boards that are 2011 or newer, it does not work on 2010 or previous. burton disks fit in union though, but if you have the newer board then you get the union-specific disk.

rome does not have a channel disk yet and burton disks don't fit well into their bases so that's a no-go

I used the Burton M6 disc since i had them already. Just cut off part of the padding on the top of the disc and rip away the rest of it. No sense in waiting for a new disc or buying them if you already have them.

Just got some Forces delivered 2 days ago...yet to try them out but I can actually tell that my board flexes better. Now I can do switch Tailblocks. I couldn't on my Customs. Maybe because of the no-dead-zone thing but I don't know for sure. Solid bindings though. I don't like the toe strap however, switching for some 3D Thingrips. Heard some good things about them.

contact pro has the same base as the contact besides the padding, it's got some higher density padding (stiffer) that makes the binding ride less loose. upgraded straps too, and yes the highback is stiffer i think.

ktown, each binding has it's own differences but they ride fairly similar.

from my experience, let's start with bases. all have pretty solid bases, none of them are "soft" or "loose" or anything. good padding, good dampness, etc. straps, all pretty good and padded and solid, preference is going to be the factor that makes you like one more than another. highback wise cartels are the tallest but not by much. forces are next. those two are stiff straight back but they are more of a medium flex if you twist them. the 390 back is the shortest and softest. they have some give straight back and are also about the same as the other two torsionally.

it's hard to compare the real world differences. the bindings themselves are all totally different in terms of parts and things, but that doesn't make them ride drastically different. i think the cartel and force are most similar and the thing that makes the 390 the most different is the highback being a little softer straight back. other than that, here's another way to put it.. i would ride all three of those for the same purpose, but the 390 is the first one i wouldn't ride based purely on response just because of the highback. i like a highback that's stiff straight back and a little taller as well, but they are not so different that i would care much.

makes a lot of sense. and from this im assuming the contract pro is an upgraded contact. i read somewhere that the eva padding on the base plate is a tad stiffer than the contact too. are the high backs on the C. pro stiffer?

depends on the boot and person. i like the 09-11 ones where the plastic on the front is exposed but there's still material there. i also like the older ones where the material is fully wrapped. the new ones work too, their replacement toe straps we have are the same, but i like the older ones more.

the pictures floating around of samples and preproduction models have a different design. johan said they changed it up a little for production but it's essentially the same.

every binding union offers is great. you're not gonna get a cheap crappy binding from the lowest end model like you would with some other companies.

TJ schneider rode the re-union 2 years ago when it was the cadet, the most basic binding they make, and obviously he is a professional. i also know that joe sexton likes the cadet DLX. the current DLX is what the cadet used to be, the names just shifted. it's a good basic binding, no frills, just a budget binding that works well. personally i would step it up to the flite if you can, it's just a little more but you get a little more as well..

As long as what you mix is from the same "chassis" then yes, basically everything is interchangeable.

All highbacks are interchangeable, as they all mount with only one bolt on each side.

I think it'll be cool once enough people get the new Atlas and start mixing them up. Haven't had a chance to get my hands on them yet, so I'm not sure of what parts you can take off.

it depends on the brand and shop. i could get a mervin ship date scheduled for july 1st, or i could get it for october 1st. not all stores or companies are the same.

a lot of the stuff for sale now is either sample or used 2012 demo stuff. there are some exceptions, like mervin (lib tech/gnu) starts shipping in july, and ride/k2 are already out. a brand like capita/union usually starts up with the rest around september. most of our ship dates are september 1.

to know for certain, you would have to know the specific shop's ship date as well as the status.. like i said, sometimes things are delayed.

Sorry for the broken pics...maybe ill fix em sometime but i feel to lazy now... anybody have problems with the leather on the straps wearing out to white... mine are and they dont have very many days on them at all

its not canting, its padding. there is nothing canted about contact pros. there just isnt. i get the autocant system VS "normal" cants, but this just is not the same. the bindings are flat.

All Unions have a brand new toe strap, even thought, most people who couldn't get them to work right, just didn't put them on correctly.

In any case, they are new and have less fitting issues.

As for screw, I worked the Capita/Union demo yesterday and didn't have a single stap getting lose issue.

As Spencer Said, the Atlas its replacing the Data and is basically a lighter version of the force with their Stage 3 base.

Where was the Capita/Union demo? I spoke to Blue before the season started and he said they did not have any demo days scheduled for the season. I would love to jump on that next year. Good to know that it happened...I will have to be more diligent next year in looking out for one.

Damn those look sick. For my first pair of bindings i got unions the DLXs cause i was trying to save some money and they decent imo. I heard wonderful things about the brand which is why i chose them. Ill be exclusively union if they keep coming out with this stuff.

not true. because the baseplate is still flat, along with the circle that the mounting disk sits in. all the different density foam does is create a different flex pattern on the inside of the binding compared to the outside.

autocant, as found on some burton bindings, is the actual footbed itself that sits on top of the baseplate.

I would say contact pros...light, good for park...still have almost as much response as cartels...forces are a bit heavier and less padded

I ended up getting a pair of the Contact SL's from a buddy, parted them out, and resold them. I kept the highbacks and the cored out toe straps. Seriously, they're so nice. One piece of the strap goes on top of my toes, the other right in front, and you can cinch the crap out of them. There's no material over the top that hinders either piece from getting as snug as a bug in a rug. It definitely the best one I've used in my riding days, including Ride EX convertibles, the Burton capstrap like I described before, and the three different Union ones.

I have had my toe straps slip up a few times, but it's because my feet are stupid big and my toes drag when I euro-carve. Other than that, they seem to stay put rather nicely. Maybe the big boot keeps them stretched out really tight and doesn't allow them the chance to move around. Either way, I personally don't think there will be any complaints from this upcoming lineup, at least as far as straps are concerned.

Having not had personal experience on the Burton straps, but having experience on three different Union straps, I can totally vouch for the cored out version (similar to the Burton above) as being far superior to the other two. If you can get your hands on the toe straps from last year's Contact SL (see below) or this year's Flite bindings, I'd do it. I can only assume you'd have a much better experience.

I had issues with the toe straps slipping off on my old boots (08 ion's) because the toe was so smooth/rounded. The old force toe strap really needs some sort of ridge to catch on which those boots didn't have. My 2010 Ions actually have a ridge on them so the straps catch a bit and work perfectly fine.

Sorry to say I've had the same issue with my ankle strap screw coming loose after a couple runs as well. I have last years Sierra/Union Contacts. I just make sure I check it a few times and re-tighten them...other than that I love the binding. It may just be a factory defect in the screw...I could probably try to get the screw and sleeve replaced and see what that does.

Is he referring to the mounting disc screws or the ankle strap screws? Since he doesn't specify, I targeted the mounting hardware. However, when it comes to the ankle strap, I don't think the length would be what's causing it. When my ankle strap screw is tightened in all the way, you can actually see the end of it poking out the other side of the "nut" on the heelcup. If it's coming loose, I'd suggest putting a small drop of loctite or super glue on there.

I don't disagree with any of you having certain small issues with the bindings, nor am I saying that Union is the perfect binding that was sent from the heavens to solve anybody's every problem. But, if you get proactive and do something about them it's pretty easy to solve them. You don't buy a car and expect it to just run forever with no maintenance whatsoever, do you? Stuff's gonna wear out/wiggle loose eventually.

From what I remember, the Burton toe straps are shaped completely different than the Union ones. The burtons have a defined top and front piece that's sewn together at an almost 90 degree angle. Saying that because those work for you and then the Unions should too is not the same.

I worked with the union rep many times trying to get the strap to work right and it always slipped, they replaced my buckles, tried to tell me to adjust the toe strap placement(which there was only one spot) and the placement on the boot but still they slip. Hopefully they will return the ones i have or replace my toe straps with the new ones so I dont have to spend an extra 40 bucks for burton toe straps that work with my boot. Personally i think its because of the material of the 2009/10 32 ultralights but if the burton toe straps work then these should too.

think of it this way.... gigi has ridden a plethora of different bindings over the years.. p1s, triads, and cartels most recently (before union), and when he designed his own union binding, its the contact pro.. take it for what it's worth.

the real answer is that there is no answer, it's all preference. you might like the contact pro more, you never know.. but most likely they are a slightly less aggressive binding because of the baseplate design.. then again we all know how gigi rides, so obviously they work..

i'm thinking of swapping from cartels to contact pros but i ride everything including park and pipe. has anyone ridden both? and if so are the contact pros as adjustable as the cartels? and is the flex similar?

Thats a no brainer for me. Go with the Cartels if the park isnt part of your game.

I have 2011 Contacts. They're amazing, to say the least. Only complaint i have so far is that the binding straps are a little big. It's easy to fix though, the straps are highly adjustable.
