A buddy got me a puck of One Ball Jay's soy based rub on wax for x-mas.  It has a cork built right onto the little plastc container, which is a nice touch.  The stuff really preformed well too!  My rock board was in some serious need of TLC and wax, and it actually stuck around for nearly an entire day at sub 10 degree temps! 

 

He said he got it at Zumiez for under $6 on sale.  I'm going to keep it in my go bag for those last minute touch ups between waxes and multi day long trips.

There are no "pores" in your base.  Think of them as ravines (google image snowboard base under microscope for proof). 

 

Extruded bases have deeper "ravines" so they hold more wax.  Sintered bases hold less wax, but are harder by design, hence the lack of friction.  All else being equal, they will be faster and more durable because of the hardness.

 

i miss the days when i could just drive up to SS and get a free wax a day before i head up the slopes...

 

i figure the machine wax will last 1 day on the mountain for $5...while a hot hand wax will last 3 days for $10...the hand wax comes out to be a better deal.

are you using a regular clothing iron with holes?  that's your problem right there.  get a waxing iron.

if you are using a waxing iron, you would have to consciously do something on purpose to mess it up.

I wax mine every two to three days of riding. 

The pain through the whole process for me was scraping the excess wax off.

That took me forever to do.  Is there s simpler way?

 I figured "brushed off" wax referred to the newly scraped shavings being on the board. Theres no way streaks of wax are going to "slough off". 

I agree you don't need to wipe it down with a cloth. But a fairly aggressive open Scotchbrite pad does seem to really help after scraping.

When I first started waxing my board I didn't scrape it enough. From my experience, the wax in the middle of the board is not going to just slough off on the first run. It will stay there for days, it's pretty damn hard. If you have a light base and you can see any dirt the wax is probably too thick.

Extra wax that sloughs off in the first run isn't going to hurt you on the mountain, but it's usually good practice to wipe down your board with a rag after scraping and brushing before you go out. 

 

i think i'm gonna give it a go this year on my own.

 

one question though, after scraping, how important is it for the buff and brush? wouldn't that take care of it self after one trip down the slope?

what on earth does this even mean?  how are you blaming burton?  most brands have waxes they sell as rub-on.  dakine, one ball jay, swix, etc etc etc.

i try to wax my boards every 3-4 days i'm on the mountain.  you could probably go 5-6 but if you do it on your own i would try and be safe at once every 3-4 days on the mountain

Cork is excellent at heating and buffing the rubbed in wax at the same time.  Rub your wax, buff the bajeesus out of it with the cork, and scratch it up with your scotch brite pad.

if you want to go really cheap, just use an old iron... but I'd definitely recommend an actual ski or board iron.

I always hot wax.

If you leave wax on the edges it will help protect against rust. Snowboard bases do not oxidize. Google it. 

It doesn't matter if it has holes in it. Just don't use the steam.

You could always pick up a $10 normal iron at the store.

But just as it is with the ladies, hot waxing it is #1.

 

this thread just wasn't complete without his advice on hot wax, even though the previous 30 posts were unanimous in saying hot wax is better.

Accidentally see my a year ago replay when I was a newbie! (Still is)

He complained that he thought his board was going a little slower after this wax.  Just a little experience I had with rub on wax.

I was thinking the same thing... how would rub on wax even do anything?
