While there might not be "pores" in your base, a sintered base is more "porous" and allows for more wax absorption. Extruded bases are harder, hold less wax and are more durable.

I usually do about 1 drop of melted wax per square inch/inch and a half on the base. A bit more towards the edges and less on the outer nose n tail. If this is true, then rub on wax only really helps in the second regard, and probably not nearly as well as with a hot wax.

It really doesn't take that much time to hot wax, so just do it. The only problem is that it's a little messy, and you need some ventilation, but meh.

From my experiences in application and use, hot wax, when applied correctly on the correct type of base, will last up to 7 or so days of use. (Assuming the wax is rubbed on and slowly melted into the pores of a SINTERED base) Rub on wax, or "quick wax", lasts a good hour or two in proper conditions, excluding ice and rain. A hot wax takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on the temperature of the board, and costs $12. A quick wax takes anywhere from 2-5 minutes and costs 6$.

Let's do some math!:

HW: Y= (days x hours)/(price x application)
    Y= (7 x 8)/(12 x 20)
    Y= 56/240
    Y= .233333333

QW: Y= (days x hours)/(price x application)
    Y= (1 x 2)/(6 x 2)
    Y= 2/12
    Y= .166666667

Now you tell me, which is better:
.23333333 or .166666667
