It's a different cold. East is much colder than the west. Yea stay out west. Lots of great resorts there. Kicking Horse and Revelstoke have some of the most difficult terrain in North America, and I believe both of them are on the cheaper side out in Western Canada. You shouldn't look more easterly than Calgary in my opinion. There are a ton of Aussies at Sun Peaks and Big White, but they are more family oriented(although I loved Sun Peaks last year, great resort). Whistler would be too expensive based on what you posted above.

I wouldnt mind but getting a work visa is harder for the states isnt it?

Look into the interior of BC. the Okanagan can be a little pricey, but has some good snow See Big White, Silverstar, Apex, Revelstoke, and the Kootenys are always fun to ride. See Red Mtn, White Water, Fernie.
