My Abandonment is my new one.  Based on a true story of a father/daughter living off the grid in Forest Park in Portland.  I watched this as a news story about a decade ago and found it fascinating and oddly not-creepy.

One of the gnarliest, longest books I've read.  Definitely interesting and the first page will get you hooked.  Be prepared to have a dictionary.  Since I'm in school right now just roaming through textbooks, but once summer starts..

Technical Analysis for Dummies and various other stock education books.

I also need to finish up the Steve Jobs biography.

So far in April, I've finished Hitler vs. Stalin by Mosier and it was a really interesting read that once again proves that history is written by the victors and often isn't nearly as historical as we would have liked.  

there was an op-ed piece in the NYT regarding Obama's late visits to Isreal and how the US didn't do much to beat the Germans in WWII as the Russians did.  Let's just say, that was a bit of a stretch and that without US mechanized units and British transport of those units, most of eastern Russia might be speaking German LOL

the eastern front was a very fascinating hodgepodge of what if and blind luck decisions with a dash of hell on Earth.  A "Walking Dead" series of sorts actually.    

Also finished the Game of Thrones book, which was 800 pages but a quick read, good book, enjoy the format from each characters perspective.

Just started The Second World War by Corrigan, my 3rd on the totality of WWII, and each has its own merits and drawbacks, but good to get a more complete view.  

Sitting at home is a history on the Middle East Wars since 2000, as well as A Clash of Kings (book 2 of Game of Thrones series) that I have to power through by the end of the month.

I have read waayyyy too many books..
although it has kind of fazed since i came to uni and started spending more time on the internet
 
I read the lord of the rings when I was 11.. Still my favourite book and movie ever (I have been living in Middle earth for the last 10 years..)
Read numerous big name books like Homer's Odyssey and Lord of flies (which I hated, but had to read for school.. UGH!) English classes make you read the weirdest books eg lord of flies and catcher in the rye. catcher in the rye was interesting but definitely depressing.
Read pretty much every single one of Dan Brown books (theyre all amazing)
Bernard Werber's books are unbelievably amazing, especially Empire of the Ants. Seriously this book series is one single book that can teach you sooooo many interesting things you never knew about... I dont understand why the sequels to this book havent been translated, all the english readers are fully missing out!
Read the Hobbit a few years ago of course.. and life of pi (havent seen the movie yet though :/) and a whole load of other ones including most of jane eyre books etc
 
At the moment Im reading the game of thrones on my kindle, think the one im reading right now is the 4th book in the series. Crazy storylines, cant wait for the rest of the books to come out and the new episodes for the 3rd season Tongue

The Omnivore's Dilemma. It's actually a good book about how corn is in everything and how it makes you fat and talks about how feedlots for cattle are really shit but its cheap so we do it.

It's actually really interesting stuff.

I picked up American Sniper last night at the airport, which is the story of SEAL Chief Chris Kyle who has the most confirmed kills of any sniper in U.S. military history.

Sadly, he was killed at a shooting range in February, 2013.

Reading Contemporary & Classic Arguments. It's actually a really legit way to learn how to make arguments. I never thought of MLK's I have a Dream speech as an argument before. I recently read, "No Easy Day".  Great story line of the seals and their ultimate assault on Bin Laden, but it still left big question marks with barely a mention of dumping his body at sea.

Finished the windup girl last week or so, and really didn't like it.  had a great premise, and could have been great, but i just hated the writing style, poor pacing, lack of character development, and a host of other problems.  i wouldn't recommend it.

also go 1/4 of the way through Zone One, a post apoc zombie book, but also didn't enjoy it, and just put it down.  The author seems to care more about the writing style and prose than about actually putting together a coherent story with any kind of characters you care about.

Glad you're enjoying it.  If you decide to read the prequel, do so only after you're done with the whole wool omnibus.  it wasn't quite as good, but still worth a read.

Just finished Trainspotting by Irving Welsh. I almost feel half Scottish, 'even tho Ah'm no a wee bit Scottish'. Ya, there were  parts in Dragon Tattoo that I guess I could have skipped altogether (Milenium Mag stuff), but my sister had told me there was a huge twist, so I paid attention to every minute detail.  It really paid off, because I had a good notion of what the twist was, just not as crazy as it went off!
 
Cloud Atlas is a trip and a half.  You MUST read at least the first 1.5 - 2 "stories" in teh book for it to make sence.  The first story ends mid-sentence... Not even kidding.  It takes a while into the 2nd story for you to realize why it did, and how the book will utimately be laid out.

I'm still chuggin' through Ender, Xenocide.  I find it to be brutal compared to Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead.  Way too much philosophy and not nearly enough of anything else.  It's killing me, but I don't really give up on books so I need to power through.

I found it unreadable. I bought it for my wife, not knowing exactly what it was about. Started reading it and it was just stupid. This is one case where the movie has to be better than the book.

I just finished Born To Run. I wasn't much of a runner before I read this book but recently I have been going out 3-4 times a week after reading it. Ya LOTR trilogy blows away The Hobbit, they are much better written. However its pretty much mandatory to read the Hobbit. Probably some of the best fiction novels I have ever read though.

I haven't gotten into this thread yet. Has Freakonomics been mentioned? What a great book. I wouldn't rely on it as an info bible, but it is still quite informative and entertaining.

It's a book you would expect yourself to get hooked into, but once you start don't expect to put it down anytime soon. It looks at if/why successful people (not necessarily financially, two examples are Canadian Hockey players and chess masters) are given an advantage from the start and what really sets them apart. Makes you think about what your advantage in life is. :)

It's a great movie.  You just can fit all the context and details of a book into a movie, and sometimes necessity requires some changes.  

If anyone hasn't read the book, they'll tell you it is a good movie.

I think they did some things really well, from the casting to the end scene.

The Da Vinci Code was pretty good although Dan Brown's Angels and Demons was better (the first of the Robert Langdon [main character in the Da Vinci Code] trilogy).

I almost finished reading "The Host" by Stephanie Meyer, same author of Twilight, but lost the book, couldn't be arsed to get another one. It was a decent read, probably easier to relate with for female teens and tweens. Apparently it's being made into a movie soon.

Started up Games of Thrones. I can see subtle differences between the book and the tv series. That's always a good one.  Inferno is the best of the three of course.  I recommend reading the next two and then looping back and reading the first part again.  The contrast between Paradis and Inferno is pretty amazing.

i agree 100% i actually started the first book... then watched the first 3 episodes to place names with faces and it helped. I do have to admit they have done a great job with the show.

A few people talked about Ender's Game on here so I read it, it was wonderful. I read the whole book in two days and that is not my style. I just couldn't put the book down. It is a science fiction book which is what a like so as said before if you don't like sci-fi you might not like it.

"A Random Walk Down Wall Street" is the title I think of a good book about investing.  Comes down to not expecting a greater than normal return unless you want to be gambling instead of investing.

And of course I've read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad"  and  "Millionaire next Door".  Those 2 books are must reads for anyone starting to learn about gaining weath and financial independance.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Fight Club. I went to Barnes and Nobles on Saturday to pick up the Christian Hosoi book. Looked in biography, nothing so I looked it up on the kiosk and it sent me to the sports section which was the magazine section. I takes place before Speaker for the Dead, but I wanted to re-read Ender's game before Exile. Also, if you like Ender's game, check out Ender's shadow. It's a parallel book from Bean's perspective. Also a great read!

yea, i've read all of the ender's books...  there's more than just three...  i forget all the titles, but they are sitting on my bookshelf at home.  ender's game was a lot quicker read then the later books...

but i haven't touched the shadow saga yet.  ender's game is kinda of a quick read because it flows like a children's book.  super easy.  i hear the shadow saga is like that.  i might give it a try when i run outta new books to read...  (i don't see that happening)

Just read City of Thieves by David Benioff and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. Add me to the list of those that have recently finished the Stieg Larson Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Really good books with surprisingly intense themes.

Before that I also read the Hunger Games trilogy, good popcorn books that are really easy to read, but pretty entertaining.

some of the books I've read lately:

-Girl with the Dragon tattoo trilogy.  liked it very much
-reread The Hobbit, just as a refresher for the movie premier in December.  GREAT, fun, quick reading!
-all 5 Game of Thrones books.  books 4 and 5 are sht in my opinion, 1-3 are fantastic.  really hoping for good things from 6.  4&5 are just so terrible, especially 4.
-some of the American Vampire comics, pretty entertaining so far, i might keep going

Just finished reading the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; The Girl who played with Fire; The Girl who kicked the Hornets Nest).

Before that, it was Dean Koontz's Frankenstein Novels (five books).
 
Currently reading Dean Koontz's The Taking.

I am currently reading Ender's Game (again). It's been a few years, and I just bought Ender in Exile, the direct sequel to the book. I takes place before Speaker for the Dead, but I wanted to re-read Ender's game before Exile. Also, if you like Ender's game, check out Ender's shadow. It's a parallel book from Bean's perspective. yea, i heard 50 shades of grey is basically porn for women...  talks about rich men hitting on innocent ladies...   stuff like that...  and i guess it gets very detailed about how he does things to her...

game of thrones...

pretty good.  i liked the tv show and decided to read the book.  gives more insight on how each character feels and thinks in each situation.

Last book I read was "Nemesis" by Jo Nesbo.  An absolutely terrible crime novel.  It's put me off fiction for awhile.

I recently read American Hardcore.


It was a pretty good read considering I enjoy reading about that sort of stuff.

Christian Hosoi just had a book published, as soon as I get my hands on some extra cash I will buy it.
