taken from http://snowboarding.about.com/cs/tuningtechnical/a/hotwax.htmHow To Hot Wax Your SnowboardSnowboards need to be regularly waxed to keep the base running nice and fast. Applying a fresh coat of hot wax every few times you ride is ideal. Or if you notice that your board's base looks especially dry or seems to be running slow, now is a good time for a hot wax. There are four things you will absolutely need:
Some optional but helpful items:
Lets get started: 1. Drip Put down an old sheet or some newspaper to catch dripping wax. Then put your board base-up on your new vises (see optional items) or on some books. Plug in your iron and set it to a medium heat. It should be hot enough to readily melt the wax, but not so hot that the wax smokes. Hold the iron perpendicular to your snowboard with the pointed side down. Press the wax bar against the hot iron and hold it there. As the wax drips, move the iron up and down the base of your board until you have stripes of dripped wax 1 to 2 inches apart. Set the wax aside. 2. Iron Now iron in all that wax until the base of your board is fully covered. Keep the iron moving; leaving it in one area for too long can damage the snowboard. 3. Scrape Turn off the iron and wait 15 to 20 minutes for the wax to set and cool. Now grab the scraper and scrape off any excess wax in a nose to tail motion. Scraping away all the wax may sound counter-productive, until you realize that a hot wax actually opens up the pores in a snowboard's base where you want wax to go. Excess wax will only slow you down. 4. Buff After scraping, rub the scotchbrite pad in a nose to tail motion to take off the last of the wax and give your board a finishing touch. You are now ready to ride. |

from: http://snowboarding.about.com/cs/gear/a/StoreBoard.htmHow To Store A Snowboard for the SummerTips for keeping your board in top shapeBefore
you throw your snowboard in the back of the closet for the summer, take
a few minutes to prep it for the off-season. Here's how.
1. Have a local shop perform a basic snowboard tune and wax.
2. Do it yourself -- a snowboard cleanup and hot wax at home. 3. Bindings It is fine to leave the bindings mounted to your snowboard. If you remove them, be sure to keep a record of your stance width and angles for reference next winter.
4. Storage |

you could wax it but most of them come pre waxed. If you bring it to the store, take the bindings off first. Itll make it easier and faster for them to do it

I imagine its to smooth it all the way out. Even after you scrape it off, theres still wax in all of the pores that creates a barrier between the board and the snow that allows you to go faster. Just like on a car, you wax on and wax off. if you didnt, the wax would harden and look awful and 2ndly it wouldnt be smooth.

If your still riding it, then you need to tune up your edges. Shops or resorts usually do quick tune. Or you can buy some basic stuff tuning up yourself, like files, file guides, gummi and diamond stone, I personally recommend vises, they're awesome. It doesn't take too long to tune up if you don't trash your board. If your saying keeping it during summers, then cover the base edges with wax when you wax it. Keep it in a sealed bag or you can put something like desiccating agent in the bag to keep it from humidity. |

Also the wax fills in all the little nicks and scatches that your board will get from normal use

If you have rust on the edges of you board/skiis you should first of all store them completly dry. Â Once your off the mountain wipe your board off with a towel to avoid getting any rust. Â If you already have wax though, I quick sharpening should get rid of it.

I rode my new board for the second day yesterday and I definitely could have used a wax job. I was sticking to the snow and was much slower than the first day. Every once in a while my board would just slam the breaks. I wish I knew factory wax didn't last more than one day or so...

its a late reply, but, like you i got my first board in febuary and the boys down at the shop were super helpful -anton and aj..big ups- when you get a board its good for 5 to 7 days on the hill.when you get em waxed you can take em in with the bindings.
make sure you summercoat your board.

depends on the day you rode. in march you are likely to be rockin in the slush or spring riding conditions and thats usually when you get that slamming the brakes feelings "sticky" is the term. usually when i come up on slush i leanback a lil. to compensate for being thrown forward.
bring on winter already!

If anyone's waxing boards themselves I'd recommend against waxing with the bindings on. If your iron is too hot you can dimple your base from the material softening and shifting your binding inserts - the force from your bindings screws will pull the inserts toward the topsheet and leave a depression on the base.

Usually a board is good for two or so trips before you need to worry about getting it waxed. You can tell by how shiny the base is.

I take the bindings off and usually put screws on the holes in case any wax gets in. I'm always scared wax will get in the threads and the bindings won't fit properly next time.

The shops down in San Diego stopped providing waxes this time of year =[.
I just started boarding, how much do you think it would cost to buy an iron and everything I need for waxing?

Leave your bindings on, it is totally unnecccesry to take them off. That way wax wont get in the wholes either...

I rode a board for most of a season without waxing it. Come spring i took it to get waxed and they said they had never seen a base so dry. So wax your board, its not just a coating it makes the base nice and moist and we all like that

Wax is natuarlly soft compared to all other things so its not big deal if a lil gets in the holes, the screws will carve it out

I take my bindings off during the off-season but other than that they stay on. And wax shouldn't get in your holes, but if it does it really should be a problem unless you are using epoxy or something lol
As for waxing goes, I put on a summer coat wax when I store it for the off-season, then scrape it the day before my first shred day. Then depending on conditions and what I was riding (park, mountain, etc.) I re-wax every 2-3 full days of riding |
