the base cleaner can be used, but dont use it unless the base is really dirty or required. it dries out the base if you use it too much. but if you gotta use it, use it

you shouldn't wax without removing contaminants from your board, you should always use a citrus cleaner, and always clean your base before a wax, if you want to do it the right way. I will never do a race prep wax without cleaning the base and removing contaminents

you could remove it with the hot wax method where you drip and remove right away. waste a whole lot of wax though

wastes alot of wax, and is relatively ineffective compared to a citrus base cleaner. You just need to make sure your not letting the base cleaner dry out your base

Dude seriously, the aggression is completely unwarranted. 1) Apparently you've never ridden a mountain like bear that cakes crap on your base, 2) I've worked as a shop tech for years, and citrus base cleaner is not dangerous to your base 3) Once the base cleaner is no longer present in liquid form on your base, you can begin a base cleaning pass with your wax, which will remove contaminants, as well as any base cleaner that is still in the base. This keeps the base from drying out, and get your base well cleaned and ready to absorb your base layer. 4) Every little thing counts when tenths of a second means the difference between 1st and 4th 5) Even the article mentioned in the original post encourages citrus based base cleaners. It says to not pour on, just damp a cloth and wipe base, the properties of the cleaner acts as magnets that will bring up material that wax won't always bring up Don't fight a losing battle |

That's what I use for base cleaning! To remove dirt and what not which otherwise would
limit my base absorbtion of wax!!!
![]() And that's what I used as base prep before waxing to have base prime and ready for a good hot wax.
![]() And then comes a nice hot wax...
cheers...

I always use a base cleaner if it needs it. I've never had it dry out my board or do anything negative to it. I use One Ball Jay biogreen citrus.

I use a base cleaner made by SWIX, but I only use it to clean the base if it is super dirty. I don't use it everytime I wax, just when it needs it. I've never had any issues with my base drying out, but when I do use it (which is rare) I use just a ilttle but.

I use the hot wax cleaning method when I was snowboards. To conserve wax I just rub the block of wax on the iron and crayon it on the base to give it a real thin layer. After that heat it up and scrap it off. The only time I use cleaners is when I make repairs.

man I love being informed and hate it at the same time. Now i'm OCD qbout hurting my board.... I clean my board with warm water and a rag every wax and use the swix cleaner ever 3rd wax, I wax ever other day on the snow. I use a home iron but never let it get hot enough for the wax to smoke. I have it just hot enough to melt the wax. I don't race but I do want my board to last as long as possible. Should i use a base prep wax and a new iron?

Great Link. I didn't realize waxing was so much of a science. I picked up a few good tips though to wax my board.

I still think that whole base cleaner thing is a wive's tale.
http://www.slidewright.com/weblog/ski-snowboard/waxing-ski-snowboard/base-cleaning-hot-scrape-or-cleaner/ I use citrus base cleaner all the time on my snowboards. Don't have a problem whatsoever with waxing afterwards. Here's a couple of my boards after using citrus cleaner and waxing. I even dripped the citrus cleaner directly on the base and immediately wiped.
They rode great and didn't dry out for a couple of sessions on man-made crud. |

I switched to just plain old water from rubbing alcohol. Works just fine. Any complaints?

Same here. I haven't ever seen this thread before. So apparently you're not supposed to use base cleaner because it damaages your snowboard. |

Yeah i need to stop using base cleaner i have only used it twice i think. So if you just hot wax the board that will be fine correct? I also had a question about scraping it off, is there a point where you are scraping off to much? i mean i know you cant scrape to much but how do you know when it is a good time to stop scraping?

Lol... I can't believe people are treating their snowboard base like it was skin... It's inert. There are no pores like skin or wood. You can't moisturise it, and you can't chemically dessicate it. Do you want some Jergens Age Defying for your base too? haha!
The purpose of base cleaner is to unbond contaminants and wax from the base surface that mild soap and water cannot. Just use real base cleaner and a brush: plastic, fine brass, or silicone bristles, it won't matter. Citrus cleaner is a popular cheap alternative, albeit with a few unnecessary additives (dye, scenting agents, sometimes varnish/polish compounds). Isopropyl alcohol and chlorinated brake cleaner are two other very strong alternative cleaners, but they vaporise extremely fast because they are almost pure solvent with no oil/slicking additives. If you're not quick, they can just dehydrate the contaminants completely while evaporating, rather than washing them out.
