So you get 8 free days at those resorts, IF you can get to them all. 50% off isn't that great when places are around $100 for a day's lift ticket. I'd rather buy a 4Pack to a local resort that I'll actually have a chance of getting to.

Not to mention one of the resorts on there is Alta, which unless you ski you're not getting into. That's not a resort I want to support in anyway, if their names on it I'm not touching it. Plus when you factor in the traveling expenses and its really not that great at all.

Maybe the local Denver Grocery stores and snow shops. Steamboat is notoriously hard to get discounted tickets for. The options for discounted tickets are buy their multi day packages, or none and nothing...

Planning a snowboarding trip to Colorado on Nov 24th. Been to Tahoe & Utah but never CO. Any chance that is too early for decent snow?

Nov. 24th is pretty early for sure, not much terrain will be open and it will most likely be man made, though theres always the shot of some fresh snow falling at that time. Most of the bigger resorts open around that time with only a few trails on man made snow.

I've never ridden any of those resorts so I can't really help you there. I'd imagine they all have a decent amount of intermediate terrain though. Hopefully someone else with more knowledge on those areas will chime in.

From what I've heard Copper is great for blue runs. Last year my wife and I had an Epic pass and went mostly to Keystone and Breck once. This year we'll probably both be getting some Copper 4Packs since they're only $140 so $35 each visit. We got burned last year since we paid $520 for each of our passes and only got to the resorts 5 or 6 times all season so it was expensive per trip still.
Where are you guys staying? |

Steamboat is great, but it's normally expensive. There's a Denver ski/snowboard club that goes every year one weekend in the first half of December and it's super cheap due to the large group. We did that last season and paid like $70 for each person for 3 nights and 2 days lift tickets. Have you looked at the trail maps for the resorts? Copper has tons of blue terrain. Keystone does too, but the only way to get down to the bottom is either River Run which is always icy, or you can take the narrow, twisty green run which is a PITA since it's pretty flat so turning is difficult for boarders. Of course, you could always take the midway lift back up or do the blue runs on the 3rd peak in the Outback area. Breck is a really fun town even without the ski slopes, so don't rule out staying there. If you won't have transportation you could take the Summit County free bus anywhere in Summit, which I've done before. It goes to Copper, Keystone, Abasin, Breck, Vail, and all the stops in town. Pretty convenient if you have a place to stay somewhere in Summit County. |

Not that most people will care but Echo Mt just got sold to some Ski group that will close it off to the public. See the notice on the front page of their website. Looks like they will be blowing out the gear they have left though.
It was fun while it lasted. http://www.echomtnpark.com/ |

Echo is TINY and a PITA to get to if there's any weather compared to the other resorts, even the smallish ones. I took this pic of Echo a few weeks ago. This is all of it. ![]() |

I agree. It's like the size of a bunny slope at a decent sized resort. BUT I'm hoping this group develops the whole mountain. Adds a lift from the top to Idaho Springs. Goes out of business and sells back to a solid group of boarders. Who then open it up to the public again. BTW - where were you at when you took the pic? |

If you look at the top middle you'll see the road I came in on from Mt Evans. I hiked a hundred feet or so off the road to get this pic. Have you looked at Echo mtn in relation to Idaho Springs on a map? It's roughly 4 miles away straight south of Idaho Springs. That would be a LONG lift ride :) Now, what would be cool would be some kind of high speed train from Denver to Summit Co that would bypass the I70 shit show. |

sixpoint - if you can swing snowmass it's the best of the resorts you listed. Has wide open runs and the crowds are significantly smaller. However, I wouldn't go there if you aren't staying close by. Not worth the commute.
Copper is my favorite in summit, but I also am not much in to the night life. Breck is by far the best for things to do outside of the resort. Great town. All of the mountains will have something that is your style, you can get around the River Run issue at keystone, but it also has the worst snow in summit. My preferences of the 5 discussed: 1)Snowmass - big, great vertical drop, wide open runs, amazing park, small crowds, my perfect resort. 2)Copper - local favorite, laid back and a good assortment of terrain. Nothing too extreme 3)Breck - has the most people for a reason, something for everybody 4)Buttermilk - laid back, but amazing park after xgames 5)Steamboat - just don't like it

I figured you were near a road. I was usually driving the times we went there so I never noticed a spot where I could see the resort on the east side. But then again I probably was focusing on the road.
I guess IS is pretty far but they can build lifts in stages. A lift or something else like a train from IS would save you from having to drive the whole thing. I hated that road. I just thought since you could see IS from Echo it would be nice if they could make it easier to get to. Especially if they consider expanding the resort. There used to be that train that went from Denver to Winter Park. They just need to extend it east and high-speed it. On a larger scale they could connect all the resorts with a train, some with lifts and you could ride all of them if you wanted without driving your car and crawling along the freeway. Kind of like how Vegas Monorail gets you to most of the casinos/hotels. |

Yup, the Ski Train. It closed down a few years ago before I moved here. I don't do WP anyways so it wasn't a big deal for me. Unfortunately, they'd have to bore a 3rd tunnel through the divide where the Eisenhower tunnel is and I don't see that happening anytime soon. They were talking about a 3rd bore for either two flex lanes or a train line. Hell, 2 flex lanes the length of I70 would be a godsend except for when the Texans cause accidents. Then the economy took a crap and everything was scrapped. |

Echo will be gone in a few years.
The 220" annual snowfall they report is low and I think it's padded quite a bit. I bet it's more like the mid 100's or less. It's just not a great place for a ski area in Colorado. The I70 conundrum. It's been a problem since before the 90's started. If CDOT actually had of started something in the mid 90's, they would have been done with it. Instead we get money wasted on study after study. Tired of it. I am also all for a rail line of some sort. If they could make it work, that would be great. The road still needs to be expanded by at least a lane if not two. The WP ski train was fun. Cost effective? Maybe not so much, but damn the bar car on the way home could be a riot. There was an attempt to revive it, but AmTrack required something like a $3 million insurance policy, that mind you no other train outfit has to carry that sunk the project. The ski train was always running bare bones and it just wouldn't work. The tunnel just East of Idaho Springs is currently be extended to three lanes, in the east bound direction. I guess the resorts were bitching enough about people not making their flights home to get something done to ease congestion. Traffic is being re routed on the frontage road around the tunnel and back to I70. It's going to get worse before it gets better. I believe it's a two year project. After it is done though, there should be some decent improvement. The drive is still going to suck from Summit on Sunday evenings for this season Though maybe 10-15 minutes will get saved by not having that Tunnel be as much of a bottle neck. I think the three lane change will happen around a mile before the tunnel. Not 100% sure on that one. It's a start at least. |

I normally take the side roads to/from Summit that follow I70 and it's usually a nice drive. If I had better tires I'd take it exclusively. I guess I won't be able to do that this year if all traffic from I70 will be diverted around that small tunnel. Even two flex lanes would be a huge help if they did them right. The police pace car program is worthless.

you have to admit, must be interesting to have parents who buy a ski resort over driving to vail each weekend...
no doubt the I70 drive is awful. The idea of a high speed train is quite nice, but the reality may not be. Summit would then be home to many, many more people. The mountain getaway would be the new big city. I like my mountains to have people few and far between. That's already tough in summit... |

I don't think Summit would have any more or less people living there with a rail service. I don't know why that would fundamentally change the equation that people could suddenly afford to move there in mass. Maybe an uptick in tourism and teenagers without their parents running wild up there.

I was speaking on the bullet train that has been proposed. Some 30Billion dollar project. It would allow access to Keystone from DIA in an hour and Vail in two hours. I think it's a pipe dream but if it only took an hour or so to get to Keystone from Denver, I would likely consider moving up there. I bet I am not the only one. A typical Amtrak style train that takes 2-3 hours, no chance.

My friend is making moves to move to Summit County. Hopefully he does because then I will have a place to crash when I go out there.
I spent a couple days in Denver last January for a trade show. It was my first time but hopefully now my last |

That's the tube train right? Still not so sure. Real estate prices are a big obstacle for most working stiffs that would try to use that. Plus, what can be developed in Summit is limited. Summit is surrounded by Forest Service and BLM land. Prices would only sky rocket if people started to do that. To your point, if things went that way I could see an increase there. I think geography would limit it though. Who knows though? Roaring Fork Valley is definitely struggling with their area and they don't have a major metropolitan area feeding their business. |

I know the Roaring Fork has picked up a little recently. It's just very boom and bust on the western slope anyway. If it wasn't, I'd probably still be living over there. There just isn't anything outside the service industry. If there was a bullet train to Glenwood or Grand Junction, that would be awesome. But I have a feeling Aspen would balk at that because they like things the way they are...or so they say.

If you're going to buy an Epic pass this year do it now. Prices are good through Sunday night and 12:01am Monday morning prices will go up.
BTW, expect 4"+ to fall on the ski resorts tonight. |

We moved to CO last year too so our 1st season wasn't that great. We had Epic passes too and it was a waste of money. I've been to a few of the smaller areas but usually we stick to our passes. |

Didn't say living in CO was a waste of money. Just that pass. There are cheaper passes he could have purchased.

Living in CO isn't a waste of money...it's an awesome experience! Since you're from Nebraska...if/when you make a trip out here....it will be more significant! But be ready to pay up the ass for lift tickets...or season passes. |
