this might sound like a silly or stupid question..but i'm hoping for serious answers. Those of you that are "regular" riders...(past beginner stage)..how often do you fall? (no tricks, or jumps..just plain old free riding).
As a beginner i have problems falling but i don't want to risk more bang ups...but i wonder, if i develop more control...will i manage to never fall?

if you don't do park...
in skiliberty and snowshoe, I never fall, even when I pop off stuff on the trail. in Stowe, I met big mountain, and it took me some time to get used to all the crazy moguls. During Last day, I fell 5 times, and I took the first gondola up, and took the second last gondola up, and only stopped to have lunch for 20 min. if you go easy, like green or blue, then you may never fall.. |

Do you get a concussion from the whiplash of falling or the impact of your skull on the snow? The way you described it you get damaged from sneezing the wrong way. As I tell my kids, I fall every time I ride. I do that because I'm tired, bad light, lazy, or more often than not, trying to push myself. I'd love to give you all kinds of support and encouragement, but it sounds like your doctor needs to make that call. My understanding is once you get a concussion, you become prone to them and they get worse. Again, check with your doc.

if you are about to begin learning.. you're gonna fall alot.. and sometime sooner or not, you're gonna fall hard also..
but after you become more advanced.. if you take it easy and stay on the blues and greens you probably wont fall much.. (just watch out for mini moguls) |

Get a helmet! A small investment for your dome.
After my 5th day of snowboarding, I was stoked that I didn't fall for an entire day and now I go on 3 day trips and don't have a single fall. But everyday is different, depends on the conditions, on the runs I go on, etc. If you stick with it, you'll get better fast and your falls will be drastically reduced |

bilyth -- if that's all it takes to ring your bell then you shouldn't be riding. Not to be a jerk (I'm definitely not trying to be), but you can become a liability and can be a risk to those around you.. not to mention yourself. I'd say that if you are comfortable on skis go back to them. Don't rish your health. |

You seriously need to stop riding if a slight bump makes you get a concussion, serious brain damage can occur. See a doctor and gt a CT scan to see whats going on it is possible you may have fractured you skull at one time. Head gear is definatly worthwhile

yeah i really agree with everyone else. even though you did just buy a whole new setup, i really think that you should get yourself checked up because if you're prone to get concussions even after tiny falls, you're bound to take a big spill sooner or later. i really don't think that it's safe for you to be riding. sorry to tell you that, but it just doesn't sound right to me.

I had suffered from a concussion when playing H.S. football and once in a car accident. The neurologist that exam me said that I was fortunate that I only sustained a mild concussion and that I would fully recover over time. During that recovery time, he said that it was in my best interest to avoid participating in contact sports. He warned that by having repeated concussions the brain may suffer from indefinite brain injuries. Its definitely not something you want to risk. I advise you to see your doctor and perhaps a neurologist. This isn't something to push aside and build a tolerance for. Its a dangerous condition that can cause permanent brain damage. The risk here outweighs your desire to snowboard. Good luck to you.

oy. dude. I agree with everyone else. if you are that prone to concussions you shouldn't be riding. I fall less frequently now than when I first started, but the falls are a little more intense. even pros can mess themselves up, simply because they're going bigger - not because they're not getting better.
sorry dude. pack it in. |

I'm a beginner and first time I went boarding I fell at least a hundred times...I fall maybe 10-15 times a day now...after 4 trips. I'd say you consult a doctor before trying...you're gonna be falling a lot.

here is something to consider....
basically a concussion is a slight or brief interruption in normal brain function that will sometimes prevent loss of consciousness. Most of the time a concussion is brought on by blunt force to the head. Have you had any other major injuries to the skull? Sometimes swelling in the cranium can increase the chance as the skull isn't movable and therefore has less room for brain expansion. i personally would talk to a DR but he might recommend a helmet and taking it easy. joe |

i know from ym own experince that ive mentioned before here, (hosptial on my 2nd trip) that it can be very very nerve wracking getting back up...but you have to do it...ive had 4 concusions in my life from playing rubgy, i wear head protection too, but its part and parcel of the sports i choose to play....the worst thing you can do is to fear another crash, accept you might fall but they will eventually start to become less frequent...and BUY A HELMET!!!!

Most of the time if I am just riding I won't fall. If I am trying something new or just do something stupid then I will fall. It is no big deal. Although last year I did feel like the biggest idiot ever when I fell getting into the lift line. There was no one in line at the time just a big group of people outside of it. I thought I would hurry up and get on before they got in line. Well I ate it and laughed at myself after along with the lift op.

If you don't ever fall you're not pushing yourself. We all fall. I usually fall a couple of times riding with bros because we are all pushing ourselves. It's the nature of the beast. |

everyone falls at first. more experienced riders seldom fall in regular runs.
everyone should wear a helmet. |

i definitely agree with barnyard. first few times out i fell and wiped hard. got me a helmet (and gotten better) and have yet to come of a day more than sore *knock on wood*.
i only fall when i try stuff outside of my comfort zone and the occasional wipe out that happens. |

If your past the beginner stage and you go on trails your least likely to fall, but in the terrain park your pretty much guaranteed to fall if you try new tricks, i know i do :D.
