Nikon or cannon are the leaders right now. Get the best digital slr you can with full manual control. Lense wise, i would start with a middle lense. focal length( i think that's the term) of something that spans from 15-80.
thats what i would do. |

Depends on what kind of camera you're looking for...
Video camera (HD, standard def., miniDV, DVD, HDD, flash memory) or digital camera (SLR or all digital)?

Nikon or canon have the best SLR but they don't fit a lot of people. And if you don't know what you are going you are just throwing money away.
My parents got a canon G7 (they have new models now) and I really like it. At first i thought he was foolish for not going with an SLR but i think that was the right choice. If it was me I would go with a Canon G7 which is on the bigger size then a small on too. Then just an SLR but SLR are nice. |

I hate to say it but Canon. They've been in digital imaging forever with copiers. After being a Nikon SLR fanboy for many years in print, I was disappointed in their digital offerings. I know Nikon makes popular cameras now but according to my cousin who's an engineer for Samsung in digital imaging and is doing research with MIT, Canon is still numero uno in digital imaging. Canon's CMOS and image stabilization is still on top. In that budget, I'm with ichiban...the XSi.

I second the Canon Rebel XSi 12.4 mgp's plus many other features. also very easy camera which takes great photos if you don't know how to use it and just put it on auto. still produces amazing photos.

See here's the thing...everyone is going to talk to you about what camera body to get but in reality most cameras created since 2006 are going to be rather similar aside from basic factors which really don't even matter (megapixels, frame rate, lcd size, body composition, etc). The only major difference between more recent cameras and those a year or two old is the recent addition of video in certain models. While I don't view this as a necessity it is a nice added bonus.
Now if I had to recommend you a package for around $900 then I'd have to go for something like the Nikon D60 with a Nikon 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens. Although the apertures are exactly ideal it'll give you a nice focal range to play around with as most kit lenses are just 18-55mm. You should really look into buying some gear used from http://www.keh.com. Since digital cameras have a limited amount of shutter actuations(pictures taken on it) before they go bad you can talk to a rep there before purchasing but I def recommend buying used. As a few others have mentioned it's really the lens that makes the picture POP. I used to work for a handful of newspapers and the lenses that I was using ran about $1700 whereas my camera body only was $800. So if you get serious about it think about saving a little bit more for a nice multi-purpose lens. Although I personally prefer Canon products, I am a supporter of Nikon also as they are more user friendly especially for those just starting in the hobby. Let me know if you have any questions. Edit: if you're looking to stay away from digital slrs and instead have a point and shoot camera I'd recommend the Canon G10. At about only $379 the G10 offers many of the same features as a digital camera in a more compact body without sacrificing much on the quality side. |

Honestly - I think SLR's are overkill for 99% of the stuff people do. Unless you need super clear hi-res pictures, some of the little point and shoots will work just fine. I can't really think of any situations i've been in where I seriously said "man, i wish I had dSLR". Given the cost difference when you start racking up accessories like lenses and whatnot - SLR's just aren't worth it for most people.
I would like to have a digital back for my olympus though - but that's just cause film processing is so damned expensive these days. |

Unless you're using it for blown-up prints afterwords (better then 8x10) I personally wouldn't bother with an SLR. You can get all of that in a really good point and shoot. Some of the sony's are nice, although i'm not a big fan of sony. Night shots are kinda - eh. Olympus's sensor works really well for low-light stuff, but I don't think the quality is there the rest of the time. This for example is $339 - and is going to be able to do just about anything you want out of it. The resolution is high enough you'll even be able to get it blown up a bit, and has a 12x optical zoom. The only advantage of a digtal SLR over a digital point and shoot, is with SLRs you can swap out lenses as needed. This however is both a blessing and a curse. You end up spending $$$$$$$$ if you want good lenses, and then you have to carry them around. Personally - after years of carrying around a 35mm SLR and a handful of lenses, it's just not worth it. The vast majority of the time if you want to take a picture, you want to take a picture NOW. You don't want to dig out a lens, meter it, adjust your settings, and 4 minutes after you thought of taking a photo finally push the button.Â

If I were you I prob wouldn't get an SLR, it think it would be over kill. Like giving someone who just learned how to carve a vapor.
I would vote canon G10 or the one sinixstar said both look good. or this one http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Stylus-1050SW-Digital-Black/dp/B001CCJNY4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1239689510&sr=1-1 They have older models i liked better I think. I think that would be a really fun on to have. |

I have a Panasonic Lumix DCM-TZ1 its a few years old now, but now you get a TZ5 I think. Well worth checking out coz mine is the really good, everything I could have asked for just a bit big in size, even my mates who use it comment on what a high tech camera it is.

I have Cannon Xsi with a 28-105mm lens and a 75-300mm lens. i use it all the time when i go up riding. there have been a couple of times when it would have been nice to have more wide-angle focal length. this camera has a lot of features that make it great for shooting something moving like when im riding. also it is really easy to use and user-friendly, which makes it a great entry-level SLR. i got mine from B&H Photo. great service. and i got the body for $557 and the lense i got from Amazon for $125 i think. definately a good but and worth it.

I know quite a bit about cameras... Â i was in your boat not to long ago and decided got get a canon 40D for around $600.
I chose Canon over nikon because the lenses are easier to obtain and are cheaper.  Honestly though if you are considering going into a DSLR realm.  The body of the camera wil be a miniscule expense compared to all the lenses you will want to buy.  I have 3 lenses, one lens cost me a whopping $1300 bucks while the others cost me anywhere from 300-500 bucks.  If this is a serious hobby.  I'd suggest you pick up a mid tier  camera like a Rebel of some kind and get a NICEEEE lens.  once the rebel breaks down you can upgrade your camera body.  Let me know if you have questions

dragon: curious what lenses do you have or take out on the mountain? i'm looking to add another lens, something that has longer reach. i was thinking the 70-200mm f/2.8...but i'm not to sure about paying so much extra for the IS, i hear it's mainly for stationary objects and doesn't have much impact if your are panning or taking action shots. it seems like the sigma 70-200 would be a good alternative for half the price of the canon.

I have the Rebel and the rebel xti, they're both solid cameras. I love canon lenses, and thats why i've been using canon for the last 6 years. That said though, i forgot a battery to my rebel for a shoot last wknd and borrowed my friends Nikon D300 the day of. Long story short, i'm selling my Rebel and lenses and switching to Nikon. I saw colors in the Nikon that i just didnt get in my Canon sensor. If you're looking to break into somewhat serious photography, a point and shoot will not do what you need. You can get a reasonable body and lens for the price you're looking for. I doubt you'll need above 6 or 8 MP's if you're getting an dslr, but they're getting to be so cheap nowadays, why not? Heres a good one..

Don't have much else to add other than I hope you're really serious into photography to spend that much money on a camera. Like what Sinixstar said, I feel that a lot of people want to take shots that would be overkill with an SLR. I generally only take my dSLR on trips that I know I'm going to be playing camera man or at least can prepare for in advance. I do not have a point and shoot camera which is killing me, because I would love to have a small one on me to take quick, simple shots that my cell phone can't cover, but otherwise had me taken by surprise without my Nikon.Â
