I used to teach snowboarding for a good ten years and probably gave a couple thoughsand lessons during that time, but not I am stuck with a big ol' brain fart. What is a good starting binging setting for a newbie? I prefer the AASI answer, but any guidance is always helpful. |

Try out some different variations to see what is most comfortable for you. I would say that +15/0 is pretty standard for a beginner. If you ride switch or hit the park a lot i would go with +15/-15.

I don't know what AASI says about it, but I think +15/0 or +18/+3 is comfortable for most beginners

If you want the AASI answer from the Snowboard Instructor Manual ...
"Stance angles on traditional soft gear are set up for the rider to easily shift balance from toe edge to heel edge. Low angles are best for this purpose, such as around 15 to 21 degrees on the front foot and close to 0 on the back foot."

I remembered when I started they always told me to have it +15/0. Its a comfortable stance and its great for beginners.

That's what I hear too... I think the best thing is to ask to try see how it is first and adjust as you go... That's how my brother got his bindings fitted for the first time, ended up being 15/0. you'll always need a benchmark to start with, then you can start customizing... sometimes too much choice can be confusing for someone who's not experienced. |

I think my customs suggested 15/0 or 15/3. I typically agree with this, gradually adjusting negative rotation on the rear to be more duck like (if park, switch riding is desirable).

I learned on a +15/0, and developed my skills well on it. I switched to a mirrored duck stance later..

I've started off a lot of my beginner friends/family at +9/-9 if they're not sure if they're regular or goofy. Once stance has been established I typically set them to +12/-9 until they decide how they want to adjust their stance.

I learned close to 20/0. I also realized when going switch, it really bothered me with my front foot at 0. So moved out to 3 to 9 to 12. I'm at 12 right now.

As a beginner I bought a used board with +12 / -6 settlings, and it was fine. I have changed my bindings settlings to 15/- 9 and 15/-12 and I think I am finally comfortable with +15 / - 3 . It's all trial and error, and conditions.

i say, if you're just learning do duck stance 15, -15.
once you get toe side and heel side down, and want to learn better carving switch to 15(lead),-3 this is only for regular riding, no switch. after you get carving down, you might want to adjust some more. |

I learned on 15,0, but it might depend on the person's anatomy too.. my girlfriend who is pretty small didn't like +15 on the front, she said it made her knee feel unsteady.. so, I would start with the popular default and then ask about comfort/safe feeling from there. The only reason I might avoid doing duck on a beginner board is because that might just lead them to want to keep doing falling leaf rather than learning to link turns.

i have to agree with banana, i dont really notice a difference too much between the angles...but i too ride 15/-15
i thought it'd be easier for switch riding, but then it's all pretty similar to me. |

A negative angle on back foot is good.
Try with -3, and increase it if you like switch riding. I use -9 cause i cant have a 0 angle even stading without shoes =P

I don't think the angle really makes much difference for a beginner. The first time out, you are so bad at it, the angle doesn't matter.

I think for a beginner not worrying about switch it would be beneficial to go with a 15/-3 or a 12/-3. As they progress probably move it up to a 15/-9 or something

Go with the standard 15/-15 or 15/0 but like Mech says a beginner wouldn't really know so have them try one and if they don't like it then try a different angle.
