Whoo, opening pandora's box.
I managed to convince a few friends to give snowboard/skiing a try next weekend. Currently, those "few" friends has ballooned to "many" friends. Now I have enough snow clothing to cover most of them (thanks to some unnamed website...) But there are a few individuals who are a bit larger than me. Any suggestions on what to do? Wet clothes are probably the fastest way to turn someone off of snowboarding. (well other than falling off a cliff or running into a tree on the first run) |

Old coveralls work to keep a person warm IMO. They might look a bit redneck but it'll work.
I had some old coveralls from Halliburton that my buddy used one year lmao |

Anything made for being in the snow. The more waterproof the better. I realize someone may not have snowboard specific gear, but to not have any type of snow gear, such as old school bib snowpants or whatever and live in New England is kind of hard to believe. If they don't own anything snow related, are you sure you want to bring a huge group of them to the hill? You are going to end up with a bunch of people who are hurt and cold.
They could always go for the jeans and Starter jacket. That makes them easier to spot as noobs and therefore easier to avoid. |

There are people in new england without snow pants! I didn't believe it myself. Anyway, it's actually just one person who I can't cover. I asked about snow pants, wind pants, running pants, etc. Nothing...

Or, go to Walmart and buy him some simple rain pants. Tell him the layer under them and at least he'll stay dry.

get some old fly fishing pants that are completely waterproof off a friend who fishes. my friend has been using them for years because they are 100% waterproof, but really hot.

I saw that you're from new england. I've never been there before, so I don't know what kinda stores u got out there. But I been doing a bit of x-mas shopping out here in the bay area in Nor-Cal. @ Burlington Coat Factory, Ross, Marshalls, etc. I saw some pretty good deals on waterproof jackets and a small selection of snowpants around $50 more or less. They don't look bad, I woulda got a set for myself since they're such a good deal, but that will break my x-mas shopping rule (DON'T BUY ANYTHING FOR MYSELF).
If they're not trying to do that, a pair of winter or thick warm up/ track/ gym pants with good breathable fabrics for base layer and a pair of jeans over it. Jeans are actually kinda winter-resistant (not waterproof), and those warm up pants with good breathable fabrics will be pretty warm and usually a little water-resistant and if it gets wet, it'll dry pretty quickly. Lol I've doubled up on jeans before. The ice on the outside jeans became a layer of ice that protected me from snow :)

they can rent some. well if the resort has them. If not have them wear some polyester sweats or somthing of similar fabric. So if it gets wet itll dry fast. (damn just realized old ass post)

I know this is old, but this info might be useful to others. My 1st time in the snow I used some windbreaker pants over some sweats. Just sprayed it with some scotch guard and it was fine. It was a sunny day tho. Not sure how good it would be on a powder day.

First trip out my friends didn't have snowpants either. Those heavy brown Carhart work pants did fine.

my idiot friend decided to go out all and buy some high end AK gear for his first day out. He used it for all of 2 hours before calling it quit.. I doubt he'll ever go up to the snow again....

if you don't have an extra pair of snow pants, can always layer up and wear some rain gear on the outside.
or layer up and wear track pants as the shell.. be sure to bring extra change of bottoms though... because they're sure to be wet! haha |

Hey now I am no noob and I've worn jeans plenty of times this season. After trashing my pants from last season, I ordered some new pants that weren't coming in til after opening day at my local mountain. All I did was put some thermal pants on, pajama pants over those for extra warmth, and then put on my favorite pair of jeans. Those pants ended up not fitting right, too baggy, so I sent em back. I had to wait a while for the website to refund my money and then I ordered some DC Sega Slims, which just shipped yesterday. Its funny that after wearing jeans to the mountain, I ordered denim snow pants. But to make the long story short, layer under your jeans for warmth and you'll be fine. The only thing that got wet was the bottoms of the legs on my jeans. Also, wearing jeans to the mountain is better during the day, cause at night you might be freezing your balls off depending on how cold it gets at your mountain.

what i used to do was get one of those windbreaker pants from ross or something. then i'd wear a pair of sweats under for two purposes. this helps keeps me warm, while the windbreakers provide snow/water resistance. the sweats also provide some cushion, and also, you can tuck the sweats inside your boots and keep the windbreaker pants outside your boots.
this was years ago, i have 2/3 pairs of snowboarding pants now. =p |

if they dont care whether they snowboard or ski, tell them to wear jeans and ski. i see people skiing in jeans all the time, you dont have to sit down on the snow to ski at all. i guess you dont technically have to to board either, but its hard not to, especially when you're beginning
