I just got back from the final Olympic opening ceremony rehearsal. It was pretty good, the first 5 mins are awesome (if you can only see 5 mins of it watch the first 5).
I can't really say anything about it (sworn to secrecy), but I will say that a sport has officially become mainstream when it opens the opening ceremonies to an Olympic games.

I am going to head out to UBC to see the torch tomorrow as well, there is a great vibe in the city right now and the 'insert country here' houses are sweet (Ireland House is already getting in trouble for partying too loudly too late/early into the night/morning hahaha).

I believe the opening ceremonies are tomorrow at 7:30pm EST or that could just be when NBC will start pre-Olympic coverage.

Vanoc site shows info here:
http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-schedule-results/ Local channels here in Vancouver begin broacasting at 4PM PST and the Ceremony starts at 5:45pm PST Took the kiddies to watch the torch relay a couple of days ago - pretty cool for the little ones to see that - passed by my house about 1.5 blocks away. |

I'm not sure if I caught the first five minutes; I started watching when there was a snowboarder in the backcountry on his descent... then the snowboarder was in the stadium and went down the ramp and jumped through the loop. It was very cheesy. He took his goggles off as if he were unveiling a famous piece of art, "welcome, to the 2010 winter olympics in vancouver!!!!"

At least it wasn't mediocre, that would have been the worst. The entire thing was so spectacularly bad that it was entertaining. After the fiddle-contest hoedown with sparkler boots, Costas announced that the cultural portion of the ceremony would conclude with slam poetry. When a fat white man with a neck beard showed up, I cannot tell you how hard the people around me were cracking up. And then when the fourth pillar malfunctioned and the para-Olympian didn't get to light the torch, OH MAN. Canada f.ails SO HARD.
I guarantee you that the London committee let out a sigh of relief for Vancouver setting the bar so low and making people forget about the incredible spectacle of Beijing, if only for a little while.

You can't compare it to China, Winter Olympics have like 1/100th the budget of summer games...... at least it was better than Torino and Salt Lake I had to look those up because I couldn't remember them...... but the beginning was the best part anyway thats how we role in Canada, at least we gErOnImO!!ed spectacularly. I still maintain we should have just gone with Circe du Soleil they are Canadian and always put on a good show.

yeah, I was disappointed he didn't do anything when he went through the hoop. A rodeo or something would have been nice, I wouldn't have even complained if he did a really stylely 180 or 360. But just a straight indie-grab was pretty disappointing after watching his mountain descent. |

It was a different rider, the first guy broke a bunch of ribs and collar bone 3 weeks ago in practice doing a backfilp 180 or something close to it and not landing it.

I didn't think that the ceremony was that bad at all, maybe it is just because I am from Vancouver, but I think we did an alright job. I was really impressed seeing a snowboarder starting the ceremony off. I don't think it can really be compared to the show that the Chinese put on, but atleast we don't take a little girl that sings awesome and put her off stage and lip-synced to because she doesn't have a "perfect face".
As for the boarder only doing a grab when going through the hoops, I think the possibility of messing up would have been a little too high, especially when landing on a non-snow surface. |
