Thanks for the videos Doug/trusnow.
So I'm good with linking turns on the greens and I'm starting to get comfortable on the blues. What is the next skill I should be learning (no park stuff though...that will be later!)? Any advice from any snowboard instructors or those who took lessons would be grateful, though anyone can contribute! Thanks!

I found this video helpful. It shows what to do as well as common mistakes.

Hey there Lewdog21. Not sure what you are going for there. Opened the link, and it just went to a playlist of 5 videos. Also, a little tip, it helps if you hyper link what ever site link you are trying to post. Just click on the icon next to the picture icon in the post reply box. It's the 5th icon from the left. Then paste your link when prompted to. Also, if you need to edit anything in a post of yours, you can just go to post options on the upper right side of your post, rather than making back to back posts with the same message.

You can embed vidoes here to my using the 7th icon over, the filmstrip, and choosing "Youtube" as the option. But the link he linked is wrong.

Any suggestions for riding icy conditions? The two previous years I had good conditions and am comfortable on the blues. I don't ride park, but this year in breck we had real icy conditions and I was having real issues linking my turns. My board was bouncing all over the place and I didn't feel like I was holding a good edge or had any control. The previous years i would carve down the mountain swapping from normal to switch during the run and everything felt like it flowed. This year felt like I had more difficulty than when I learned to board.

What board are you riding? Aside from getting a new deck with something like frost bite edges or magnatraction, what you want is a good sharp edge. Since you don't ride rails, this should not be a problem. Take your board to a shop and have them wax your board and sharpen your edges for icey conditions. My Rossignol One Mag has magna traction and it cuts through ice like butter!

I think what you west coast guys call ice is what we call hardpack in the east. Ice is translucent. If it's white it's snow.

LOL! Could be ![]() I've never boarded on the east coast, but what I get down here on my hill in Las Vegas is nothing like what the rest of the west coast guys get...

I ride a Burton Custom Flying V. It only had about one or two trips down the mountain when i bought it and the guys at the board shop said I didn't need to wax it yet. I live in Texas so I took their word for it. And belleayre I believe you are correct it was hard pack. Either way it was def. harder for me to hold an edge. It also didn't help the third day I took a pretty nasty spill and broke a couple ribs. I was a little timid after that.

It's not as much the wax as it is the edges being sharp. If it had only been ridden twice, they should still be sharp, unless whoever had it before you had detuned the edges.
The custom has frostbite edges which should help in icy conditions. So besides making sure the edges are sharp and really digging your edge into your carves, not much else you can do for ice but be carefull! I'm still weary when I hit a patch of ice...

Sign her up for a lesson! ![]() What do you mean by stand up? She can't get herself off the ground or once she's up she just falls? |

It would be less embarrassing to be falling with everyone else in a group lesson then on your own. Seriously, 4 hours? How about put her on a skateboard first?
I think everyone should take at least 1 lesson first. My daughter did last year and all they showed her was how to stand and how to skate with the back foot, but that was enough for me to take her down the hill last weekend. Not just the bunny, but the run I do... edit: Oh yeah, but I did get that "Learn To Ride" DVD from Snowboard Addiction. It's got 40 minutes of great beginner stuff from how to stand in your living room to getting on and off the lift. I think the download for it is super cheap, and it might help her out a bit. I know it showed my daughter some great pointers before I took her on the hill. I even learned a few good tips from it!

Yeah...I don't understand about she doesn't want to be embarrassed when everyone else in the class will be at her same level. Have you tried getting her to just skate around on the snowboard? She may be falling because once the board starts moving she's scared and she instinctively leans back. Take her to a flat area and have her strap in one foot and have her skate around so she gets used to being on a slippery surface. |

Go for a group lesson on a day when there's no one out there. That way, you basically get a private lesson for the group price. This worked for me in the past.
