Agreed, this is huge. Best part for me was the advice against buying a big mountain freestyle board, which I should have heard 3 years ago when I bought my Custom X -- what an expensive lesson. Yes, it rips, but if you don't ride it, then it will ride you. It's kind of an ego board which is why I've given up that whole racket.
I've softened all my boards down and my enjoyment has gone way up. SL-R and Nitro Team Gullwing are my two decks now and they are sooooo much fun. I don't feel that I am giving anything up in performance out west or just jibbing around the park. Thanks for a great post.

Great guide. Only got to skim through it since I'm at work but I plan on sitting down with a cup of coffee when I get home and picking my way through the whole thing.
Gotta admit...the combo breaker tossed in there definitely had me laughing. |

Great post. I just hope it's not wasted time. 99% of people who buy snowboards are just looking for validation and have no patience for learning about shape or flex or sidecut. They want someone to tell them what to do or oftentimes just want validation for something they already bought. For all you wrote, the ultimate rule is basically that it all comes down to preference, and most people who need it broken down in this much detail don't know their preferences.
Still, great write up. If even a handful of people get use out of this, great. Well done, sir.

Great post!
I wish I read it before I bought my board. The combo breaker made a nice little break point. Haha.

Just wow my dude, good stuff, definitely gonna get linked everywhere. The reverse camber section would have helped me out if I had read it before buying my board!

great guide. i just hope most have the patience to actually read the whole thing. with all the new tech, a lot of people are getting confused by all the terminology. this breaks it down perfectly.

thanks all, i feel like i have to add a section on the quiver. I rode around hokkaido with three decks and theres just so many positives and negatives to it that it feels completely inconclusive. I still dont know if it was better or not. Sure, you can pick and choose, but you can also pick completely wrong and end up on a deck not suitable for the conditions whilst also lamenting that you arent on x or y board because theyre just way better for the conditions. So instead of just riding it you can get all mopey and obsessive about the "wrong" deck. Then again, iuts the wrong deck because when you are on the RIGHT deck, it really feels awesome knowing you arent stuck with the one board. Bloody hard to call this one in truth. I could have gone there without the charlie and maybe not even noticed, but getting on the charlie and just ripping was AWESOME fun, and because its what its made for, you relax into it and just blaze!
But then again, all this chopping and changing meant i didnt feel a consistent sense of progression. It felt more like i was progressing in 3 different areas specific to how i think three different boards should be ridden. Its weird stuff. The quiver is not the ultimate solution you might think it is. :) And i only have a moderate overlap with four decks (sierrascope, airobic, quiver killer, and charlie). Id hate to be civic and have like 10 billion decks to have to pick from. :) So er yeah, to quiver or not to quiver? its a tricky question :) |

come on, an all mt deck and a pow board, what else did you need in hokkaido, hitting up the park a lot? i took four decks with me to CO, and had a split waiting for me when i got there, I could have gotten away with three, and the split, and been fine...but lets face it, a quiver should be made up of a solid all mt., a pow board, and a park stick...that is all anyone would ever need in a quiver.

its in part derived from watching these two swedes i was hanging around with wrecking everything on their indoor and stairmaster respectively. I enjoyed having the decks to choose from but it felt (again) like a bit of a trade off so i figured it was an interesting point to bring up. :)
And yeah, i had the charlie, the quiver killer and the airobic out there. Pretty much ticked the three boxes youre talking about. Its just weird enough to be one of those open ended things you can discuss till the cows come home: the quiver versus the quiver killer? I reckon it could be nice and controversial too because i genuinely cant decide which one was better for me in the long term :) Take that quiver killer for example. The board really feels sick. Like there is NOTHING that board wont hit! its stable, its fast, its solid, but its just not as fun as the bataleon for mucking around and its not as fun as the charlie for those massive sprays (and thats all i wanted to do on the charlie in truth, i could have literally done that all day long :)). But that being said, the board still feels freaky deaky slamming. So maybe it doesnt feel 'as much fun' because i didnt use it in a fun way, so to speak? If id have ridden that all season im fairly certain i would have felt a stronger clearer sense of progression than i ended up with, but instead i took it out when the snow was a bit lacking and stability and bombing were the big features. It hit up some pow, it flew up some walls and took off on some bumps (that thing POPS into outer space when you hit it right), but it was really felt like it was mainly used for carving progression more than anything else. I rarely hit up ground tricks on it, didnt take it in the park (i only really brought it out in furano where the park was non existent), and since there wasnt all that much powder to be had in furano and there aint much in the way of slack country, it was restricted to a certain type of riding and certain presumptions on what it can excel at. I kinda both like that (because it lived up to those expectations), and kinda feel it to be a little restrictive and over obsessing about the tech at the same time if you get me :) |

This is a great guide, thanks ipp for taking the time to write it up and from the looks of earlier posts, looking over/ editing it? Saving it for future reference.
