Anyone here been to Schweitzer mountain in Idaho? My relatives have a house near there and invited me to go for my spring break and I'm just trying to figure out if its worth the plane ticket from the east coast.
thanks |

I went there last season with some friends for a 2 day trip on a kind of tour of the Pacific North West. Its a very nice mountain, maybe ten lifts or so with some great terrain and some spectacular views. We were there the second week of December and they had fresh powder and it was not crowded one bit. I'm not sure if that is a regular occurence or if it was just because we there before the holiday season. I would say its certainly worth a trip out especially if you can stay there for free. 49 Degrees North which is also in the area is a great resort as well if you have access to a car.

Silver Mountain in Idaho is also a very nice place to ride but I wouldn't bother with Mt. Spokane or any of the other smaller resorts in the area.

yeah i think i'm gonna go my grandpa has a sick ski lodge on a neighboring mountain and offered to put me and some of my buddies up for the week and it would only be 20 minutes away. my other option is to ride Mt Baker with some of my friends from university of washington but that would be alot more expensive since i would have to pay for food/lodging/gas.

Schweitzer is an awesome place I have been there a few times and it is such a great atmosphere up there overlooking the lake. Great terrain park and plenty of good runs.

Personally my favorite resort ever! Even compared to Keystone. And that's saying something. You can hit powder and park in the same run. It's an amazing resort, and never really crowded.

Is there even a comparison? Schweitzer looks like the real deal to me. You could go to a lot worse mountains, that's for sure. |

Sounds great. combined with having a free place to stay and free food at my grandpas place it sounds like an awesome spring break trip. Do the conditions normally hold up through the end of March?

Sorry, late to the party, but I've ridden Schweitzer a few times.
If you're staying close, go for it! Check out the Snow Ghost Lift, a huge powder field of double diamonds off the back side. Skirt a frozen lake and head down to a little shack with a bonfire and beers. The Stella Lift is a high speed 6 shooter! It's crazy fast. High speed lifts all over the hill too. Parking can be a real biznatch though, so get there early in the AM. I used to manage a shop in Missoula, MT, and we rode for free at Silver Mountain in Kellog all the time. Definitely worth a day trip down from Schweitzer. You have to ride the world's longest gondola to GET to the hill from the town. It's sweet. The end of March you'll either get late DUMPS or bluebird sun.... or both! :) |
