I'm planning on taking a trip near the end of March. Looking for a place to go that will be good boarding at a reasonable price. I don't get into the parks much so that's not a big deal. I went to Vail, CO in December and it was a blast...I'm looking for something a bit cheaper though. I'll be driving from Kansas City, MO. Any ideas?

can you define your budget? I was able to plan a week long trip (4 nights in whistler and 3 nights in Vancouver) for about $700.
not sure what your price range is. |

I'm trying to stay around that same budget of $700. I've done a little research and am thinking about Salt Lake City. Flight and 3 nights lodging is going to be around $400 round trip. Then all I have to decide is which resorts to board...

like the above post. It depends on what your budget is.
Sounds like youre driving. So in my mind the only place worth driving to would be CO. Especially the resorts on the "east side" of the rockies. If you're not into park then Loveland might be a good choice. It's all I-70 to the exit. then it's like a 1000ft to the actual parking lot. AND you can get deals/discounts/coupons for lift tix if you look. Most of the cheaper hotels are a distance away though. You pass the exits for Winter Park and Echo to get to Loveland from Denver. Echo is all park and really small. I mean really small. It's like one of the shorter runs at a resort. Did i mention it's all park. Oh and there's no real hotels close to it. You'd have to drive maybe 45 min (at least) out to find something. Winter Park is a great resort and there are a couple down right cheap places to stay but thy're cheap for a reason. There's also a Hostel up the road thats supposed to be cheap. You pass Loveland to get to A-Basin. and i think you can get cheap tix. Eldora is the closest to Denver. But i've never been there. Then there is Breck, Keystone and Copper etc. So you could board all of them if you wanted. Some of those would not be cheap and it might be hard to find discounts etc. Check the Denver Craigslist. There's places to stay around these places but none of them really cheap. You're not going to get any discounts/cheap tix/lodging at Vail or Aspen. If SW Airlines comes out of KC,MO then flying might cost the same. they dont charge for snowboard bags. You can take another bag and a carry-on. I've got flights for $60 each way. But then you have to find a way to get to the resorts or rent a car. |

just saw your post about flying. try to find cheap tix on SW. That way you dont have to pay for your bags.
Park City should be good. And SLC is so close that even if you cant find something cheap in PC you can stay in SLC. I think there are shuttles into PC so you dont even have to rent a car. |

sorry one more thing. The end of march into April CO resorts kind of quiet down a little. Which is weird because they usually get a lot of snow around that time. But you should be able to score some cheap tix people have left over from buying 4-packs and stuff that wont be going again this season. Especially since some resorts close at the end of April. I'm not sure but I know King Soopers had some coupon books for sale that had discount coupons. Dont know if they have any more but thats what you'll see people selling on CL.
I'm going at the end of March too. i'll probably hit up Copper and Breckenridge. |

I'd HIGHLY advise not sleeping in your car when it gets that cold! I've been advocating a lot for Brighton, UT. It's in the Canyons like Park City and, correct me if I'm wrong guys, you can use the same shuttle to get to the lodge. They have all kinds of specials spread out through the month and a great mountain as well!

Ok. Pretty sure we've decided to go to SLC. We're going to be boarding 3 days. Hitting up Snowbird 1 day for sure. Any recommendations for the other 2 days?

I think some people died in an RV last year on the resort parking lot. They had it running all night and the exhaust had a leak...straight up and through the floor. Carbon monoxide poisoning and they never woke up. Be aware of this if you know anyone doing this

Canyons and Park City MR are the only ones i can vouch for.
Canyons is huge, i think it may be the largest in UT. Not a ton of acreage devoted to park tho. PCMR has more stuff for park rats. Just a little smaller than canyons I think. The nice thing about PCMR is there is a lift in town. So if ur staying in PC then PCMR might be the place. They're all priced the same anyways. When I went (2008 i think) Deer Valley and Alta were ski only resorts. Not sure if they still are. I know there are other resorts in the area but not sure about those either. |

Alta and Deer Valley are for sure still ski only.
Honestly, any of the little cottonwood canyon resorts are very doable with a dirt cheap rental car. the shuttle that hits all 4 of them is $3.5 each way so you can get a $15 a day compact just to putt around town and get chow and not worry about getting to the mountain. http://www.rideuta.com/mc/?page=RidingUTA-SkiService I used it on one trip and it was really convenient, but cozy on a pow day. UT is about as cheap as you can get anymore. |

A Basin and Loveland are both cheap. There aren't lodging at either resort though. You can usually pick up a hotel in Dillion at the La Quinta Inn for under $100 a night.

Reserved a hotel and flight in SLC. Now trying to decide which resorts. We have 3 days of boarding to get in. So Snowbird is on the list for possibly 2 days and Brighton for the other. Open for suggestions....

Powder Mountain and Park City are my favs in SLC. Snowbird is good if it's a deep pow day. Stay away on a groomer day. Solitude sucked ballz.

@turbo
what kind of riding do you do? You cant go wrong at either one but PCMR has more park than Canyons. Especially if youre staying close to either one. |

we're staying at deer valley of all places. we missed out on the big house at park city so had to goto deer city for a place that fit 20 ppl. anyways, i'm an all mountain freestyle kinda guy, definitely not a park rat, so like natural features to jump and jib. also just like to bomb down steep groomers and love bowls. but dislocated my shoulder 3 weeks ago and there's still some damage so i'm going to take it easy. again, not a park guy so sounds like canyon is gonna be ok... |

Does anyone know what resorts allow you to use your boarding pass for a free lift ticket on the same day?

Not sure how far you are from an Amtrak stop, but check this out:
http://www.rmatours.com/colorado.html Me and a buddy are going to Winter park for 2 days next weekend for $450. Price includes rail transportation to the mountain, 2 nights at a hotel, 2 days of lift tickets, and all taxes. Transportation to the mountain is included. If you are willing to move up your trip to next weekend (leave on 2/25 return on 3/1) let me know, can probably get a better rate. Figured that is a deal that cant be beat! |
