Ok, we've all know that before a waxing session should even start that we should use a base cleaner first to clear out the ol' base pores.
Questions: 1)How many of you actually do this? I clean mine every once in a while, but not every time. 2) What do you use to clean the base? Currently, I just use rubbing alcohol. Probably not the best idea I know, but I'm not sure what is actually in real "base cleaner."

nope - I only clean mine at the end of the season, right before I put on the wax storage layer...and I guarantee you, my board will glide farther than yours on any given day
Anyone who uses base cleaner every wax is just creating a lot of "make work" and wasting resources. A brass brushing is all you need, pre-wax |

I have used many stuff as base cleaners. It really depends on the strength of the cleaning agent. I have used Dakine base cleaner which is citrus base. It's prett mild so I do use it every time before a wax. Simple Green is another thing I used for base cleaner. Both of these tends to leave some residue so make sure you wipe the base really good with a dry cloth before wax. I have used auto prep spray. The spray is super aggrassive and can easily take off paint and wax. I use it sparingly on really tough to remove stains on the base of the board. None of these above cause any ill effects on the waxing.

We usually use a citrus based cleaner pre-wax as we tend to ride on a lot of man made snow here in the Northeast as well as an occasional ride over branches, dirt, etc. in the trees.

unless u get alot of dirt and stuff on it, there really is no need to do it everytime. if anything you shoudl be more concern with drying out your base

I've never used any cleaners for my board yet. Not sure if I ever plan on using anytime soon. I've heard the same about how it dries up the base and all.

If you want to clean your base, I would suggest a wax/scrape clean. Apply a layer of wax and then immidiately scrape it off before it can properly dry. This pulls out any dirt or much that could be in there with the wax.
Its actually much better for your base and gives you a nicer wax every time! |

I use simple green every other time I wax. If I see the base is dirty I'll do it too but sometimes the base looks clean yet a lot of dirt comes out.

Just don't leave it unwaxed for too long. But I guess that holds true for any drying chemicals. |

Also, it's a misconception that there are "pores" in your base. It is just an imperfect surface, with random bumps and ridges. The wax just fills these and makes it perfectly flat - thats why you are supposed to scrape your wax off. Wax is just to fill those imperfections. Don't use base cleaner unless absolutely nessecary, and even then a hot scrape works better.

I only use a base cleaner if my base is filthy. Even then, it usually cleans up fine after scaping and brushing pre-wax, So, yeah, I don't use base cleaner a lot.

Another vote for the citrus based base cleaner. Though I don't use it often, only if I have been riding on a lot of man made snow and it is getting dirty/sticky

i made my base cleaner. zested lemon lime and orange and mixed that with vinegar, water and a little bit of dish soap. it works well. doesnt get out really tough stuff unless you scrub hard. but does remove a lot of grime. However i like the sound of not cleaning it everytime and using a brush. Might try that next.

I clean my base always before waxing it.
I use the branded TOKO wax remover to take the excess wax out and to apply the new wax in a better way. So the wax will not turn to black colour. http://www.gearwest.com/toko-hc3-wax-remover-250ml-pr-8906078.html that the link of the product I use. If you have any problems, just tell me. |

Does it really matter if you use a cleaner or not? I used to use it alot... every time I waxed... but I don't feel the difference...

if you're racing... yes, if you are just cruising down the mountain... a hot scrape before each waxing is all you'll ever need.
as stated earlier... it's a waste of resources to use a base cleaner every wax. |
