The middle east is crying out for democracy. Countries like Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Jordan are all cracking down on their governments for democracy. What do you think about all the commotion?

I agree with the voices saying that egypt is not algeria. That being said, mubarak can't stand alone facing protests forever. Let's see what friday brings.

the whole situation is real complicated..mubarak should leave because he has done nothing but cause problems for the egyptian people, people are poorer than you can imagine yet he has a net worth of over $30 billion..
the radicals cause a lot of problems too, there are the peaceful muslims that want to simply live a better life, than there are extremist groups that project a negative image of the muslim people |

1.3 billion, it's actually 1.5 billion, and 1.3 billion is in arms(you know us, gun dealers to the world, lords of war), so there isn't much left over for the snow dome...really, it doesn't look good for us anyway it goes...say hello to $5/gallon gas!

the US has propped up Mubarak for yeeeeeaaars. and ironically, the stability in Egypt has been, along with the Saudi Arabia, about the only long term friend the US. this crap is going to get nasty if this speads. $5 gas might be the starting point. |

The entire Middle East is about to erupt into mass warfare. It has been unstable for decades, and this might just be the spark that sets it off.

I thought we invaded Iraq so to set an example for the rest of the middle east to form democracies. Now that its happening, its bad? As long as nothing happens to the canal down there, it wont faze me at all. Nothing really comes from Egypt, only thru Egypt.

I'm wondering why these women still rock the drape that covers up themselves. All those women should be revolting against that and let the men revolt against a new political leader. What were all these people doing before this protest?

im all for democracy and everything and if a revolt is what needs to happen then thats all good, but what in concerned about is who is gonna come in to power after the revolt. Because the nations gonna get pretty weak and the radicals could make a move, and if that happens then oil is gonna sky rocket

They are just a major export center of oil, so it is very likely to effect the prices. I think they are setting up riots for the whole middle east to riot. In the next year, I'm expecting a bunch of countries to try and overthrow their governments. |

All I can say is wow to some of the responses. Believe me I laughed with some of them but I hope people realize the magnitude of this situation. This is a critical moment for not only Egypt but particularly the US and Israel as well. Egypt has an incredibly powerful army (particularly relative to it's size) because that's how we (the US) wanted them to be. Now a major stabilizing force in the middle east will likely go in the opposite direction. And that makes for a bad situation for both sides.
Egypt's top sources of revenue are Tourism (and no Vector did not steal the pyramids) and the canal (not the one in Panama). The Brotherhood and similar groups have a single focus. I hate to break it to you it's not a free market or democracy. And i'm afraid that will be even more evident to our 3D-TV facing eyes and our headphone covered ears. $5 gas will be the least of our worries in the long run. You ever seen that movie "Idiocracy"? No wonder we're ranked near the bottom on the world education list. "We're number 30, we're number 30...", proudly chant the Americans. |

at least there seems to be a major paradigm shift, where countries seem to be interesting in a democratic society from the ground-level on up, which i see as very positive. this is very different then how we have previously been forcibly removing dictatorships and having to rebuild from there.

The understated brilliance of Idiocracy is lost on most people. The situation in Egypt is going to be an interesting one as the potential for further destabilization of the region is extreme. Combine that with our positions with Isreal and Iran eroding daily. |

mubarak should step down before the bloodshed escalates.
as for "the army stepping in" they're not connected with mubarak and operate as a separate entity. when they first entered cairo, they were CHEERED and the mobs were generally responsive to their demands "eg. obey curfew so we can catch bad guys at night". so far, the military has generally made attempts to keep things humane like form barriers between demonstrators and police by making a blockade to stop projectiles with APCs. |

Their army isnt winning the US any bonus points either. They are displaying the tanks we sold them (m1a1's and m113's i think). Using our military hardware to quell their resistance does not help our image over there at all.

americans here do not understand the situation in egypt..the people there live on a daily bread supply, unemployment is a major concern for the entire country..the revolt is being led by youth in egypt because they go to college, men are forced to serve in the military and once released from service, they enter a country that has no jobs available..
people worldwide do not understand the hardships the egyptian people have suffered under mubarak..the government has a long history of a brutal secret police force that respects NO civil rights..hundreds if not thousands of people have been illegally detained with no charges against them..in mubaraks last "free" election, the man running against him was arrested and sentenced to 5 years in jail..no trial or chance to explain himself, he was simply arrested and detained because he spoke out against mubarak. the american government supports mubarak because he was able to hold peace between isreal and egypt, and the only reason he did that was to continue receiving aid from the US.. mubarak was an army man, a man of not any significant wealth until he took over the country..in the 30 years he was president, he amounted $30 billion to his name..how was a man worth nothing able to gain so much wealth? extreme corruption! something americans know little about is the life of the coptic people under mubarak..copts are egyptian christians whose ancestry dates back to the dawn of christianity..coptic people are the true descendants of the ancient egyptians..they have been persecuted since the arabs took control of egypt, and under mubaraks rule, nothing was done to stop these persecutions.. on the night of new years there was a coptic service being held at saints church in alexandria egypt, a few minutes into the new year there was an explosion outside the church that killed 22 young coptic people..mubarak released a statement saying they will look into these attacks, but that in the same speech he dismissed the acts as an outside form of terrorism..in other words he simply blamed muslims from another country attacking coptic people in an attempt to disrupt egyptians foundation.. this narrow-minded approach is what has led egypt to what it is today..the US has given egypt a lot of money in hopes that it would remain the stable centerpiece in the middle east, under mubarak..think about it, how much public interest was there in the tunisia uprising? how many times had president obama addressed the situation? then compare that to egypt..nearly every day of the uprising there is another white house rep speaking about the situation, obama himself has spoken twice on the issue, twice in the last 12 days..this revolution is being led by the youth of egypt, copts and muslims, all in a hope for a better life..americans need to open their eyes and look at the broad picture.. if anyone thinks internet shut down and the lot could never happen here, think again..obama enacted a bill allowing the US government power to monitor and possibly suspend internet activity if they felt the need.. |
