Hey guys, first off i want to say i'm from the east coast which is why i'm asking about lines since when i ride its usually inbetween hardpack or ice.
The question comes into play when the hill has those big rolling humps. So say a mountain looks like this \ but on that angle there is like humps (not moguls). I'm not sure how to best take a line down since there are basically infinite lines. I've noticed that when I'm on an edge I will often catch air for a bit and it gets real unstable for a second. But if I'm flat footed then it just gets too fast and too scary. |

keep your knees really bent and make sure your legs have plenty of stamina to absorb little humps at high speed.

Scope them out before you hit them, unless you want to land in the worst possible spot and put your back knee through your chin and require stitches ![]() Also for the rollers try to ollie before you hit the crest of them so you land even and smooth with the down slope. |

is there any good advice on landing when catching a little air? should i keep my legs fairly stiff or let it a little loose to absorb the landing? i get nervous and stiffen up my legs when i pop up a little from edge, and end up falling....
advice appreciated! |

speed check (slowing with turns) just before you get to the bump, then straighten up and ollie off the bump...repeat.

@chramiji
definitely don't keep your legs stiff. personally i have a slacker riding style, so from take off through mid-air to landing my knees are slightly bent. that said im not a particularly great jumper, but my legs are always loose enough to absorb an unexpectedly hard or turned landing. also the setup is pretty important, so take off smooth and at first give only enough pop to get to a comfortable landing. i like to stay more compact in the air, even if its just a clif drop or off a cornice. |

Rock back and forth on the board. With the right timing and coordination you can control your speed going up one side of the mogul/feature and back down the otherside.
The opposite would be to absolutely tear down it at breakneck speed and keeping your legs super active and absorbing everything, sure you may not control the speed but for short stretches you are stable enough to manage a change in direction or ready enough to jump.

@TS
yeah I know exactly what you mean.. but what ends up happening to me is i always catch an edge.. I've found that If I went a little faster.. I'm okay.. or if I'm always on either edge most of the time I'm good. having a really hard time initiating an ollie on any slope.. but off flat ground I can manage.

The best way to tackle any obstacle is to get in a good athletic stance. Knees nice and bent, not too bent at the waist. Keep your head high and looking ahead to where you want to go. When you catch a little air, many people tend to look down. Don't do this! Keep looking to your landing. In the air keep your knees bent and cusion your landing. Practise doing ollies on the flats and then on small rollers and work your way up. If you ever feel like you are going too fast, do wide turns. You can also shed speed (simmilar to what park riders do when approaching a rail) - slide your back foot out quick just to shave some speed.

9 Years ago I went surfing in Hawaii. The surf instructor lady paddles over to me and says: "You're from a mountain state... Aren't you?" I asked her how she knew, and she said that people who haven't been on boards before stand face forward. I stood on the board sideways and went down the wave, not across it. So she knew I was a snowboarder. I guess we all do think alike :)

Good tip! I usually fall off balance due to my stiff leg stance.
