I don't understand places that charge more for using a card.  I mean, I understand it covers the cost of the transaction fees, but really?  10 cents per gallon?  But if you go into the store to buy something, there is a fee of 35cents or something like that.  Why can't they do that for the gas as well?

That $.35-.45 is usually for a debit card.  I'm pretty sure credit cards usually charge a percentage while debit cards have a single use fee.

Credits cards are a small fee for most cards, I think American Express is the highest out of all the major cards, which is why it's not accepted as widely. Seriously though it's part of the price of doing business, I hate stations that try to pull the cash/credit price bullshit. Especially ones that try to hide it from you.

One time I saw a station with a good price, parked to fill up and then saw that the prices were different when you swiped your card. Glanced back at the sign and saw in much smaller print that the CC price was 15c/gal more. Cancelled the transaction and went across the street and paid a little more just on principle. Bitches.

The real scam like you just mentioned above  is that the electronic street sign has the lower price of 3.81 listed  and alot of people dont even look at the actual number on the pump when they swipe the card. It says 3.91 on the pump  until you go in and pay first with cash  then they reset it to 3.81

There's a Shell station in South Asheville that has a gigantic sign on the edge of the road with the price showing about 10 cents cheaper than everyone else's lowest grade. I thought....GREAT, that's freaking awesome! Went there once when we first moved to the area, and find out that fantastic price (that's only 10 cents less, mind you) is if you pay cash AND buy a freaking car wash! Their regular price with no car wash and using a credit card made it 15 cents MORE than everyone else! Idiots!

On another note, I paid $4.17/gal for premium (93 octane) today. $50 for a little more than half a tank. I think I need to consider buying $3.89 gas and spending another $3-4 for gas treatment/octane booster...wonder if my Bimmer will notice the difference?

Oh the Bimmer already (finally) knows when I put cheaper gas in...had been cheating on the 87 octane about every other trip to the pump (always less than half-tank). Noticed earlier this week it wanted to chugalug minimally (but noticeable to me) while idling after first starting it up.

Just curious about the additives on top of a lower grade (even if it's 89). Yes yes yes, I bought a vehicle knowing full well I had to feed it right (and the tank cap even says nothing under 91).

What's happening is that the ECU is retarding ignition timing and increasing injector pulse width (more fuel) to compensate for insufficient anti-knock in the fuel (octane rating). This also causes poorer emissions because these variables are out of boundaries. You'll be okay, but run it for a long time (like several years) and you'll start to see mechanical repercussions from doing this. Using higher-than-specified octane fuel can have similar effects. The chemical additives should be the same across all octane ratings (except maybe ethanol content) and their only use is actually to stabilise the fuel from evaporation in the fuel tank.

I went to fill up my tank this morning and saw some dude gets taken out in cuffs. Apparently, he lost it on some poor woman that took the pump he was next in line for. So rather than wait her turn, she went around the dude and his f250 and took the furthest pump away. And I guess that's when the fireworks started. This all unfolded on a saturday morning! Price is still at $1.30/L so I don't know what the big deal was? Maybe he was in a rush, maybe she seemed like one of those spoiled rich ppl with their range rovers doing whatever they want, but who knows what set him off. This was all according to the gas station attendant. But that's some crazy shit!

Taken away in cuffs when you just went to fill up your tank. I can't imagine ever being in that situation.

Gas still over $4 here, but it's been slowly creeping down a bit.

4.19 by my house but last time I went to pump, after I pulled the nozzle out after filling up, the gas started bubbling and spewing out of my gas tank for a good 15 sec!  What a waste of gas!

Typical, now that I only have one ski trip left, the price of gas starts to drop.  $3.899 in Cal's Central Valley when I was passing thru.
