I thought you said you guys were staying in South Lake...? And if you're staying in North Lake, and it's been snowing, the reason why you didn't go to Kirkwood is because it's a royal PITA to drive there especially when you have other resorts (which have more snow right now) closer to you.

yes they do have steeper hills than we do. longer runs also. hence challenger scared the shit out of me when i looked @ it.
as a note bohemia was a blast though gave me a totally different perspective. definitely a different feel of terrain. now i think i have the balls to make it down any black with the exception there are no trees in my way i wish i went to kirkwood but it was on the other side of the lake of where my friend lives. he has a season pass to heavenly but kirkwood was so cheap i dont know how we didn't find the time to go. i heard it dumped before i left wi and your right about the date it was like the 26-29th |

And your post is a nice reminder that I still need to hook you up w/ some info in your thread. There are already some good recommendations in there. Like you, I'll be doing my best to appease the snow gods for some good pow during your trip. It's very possible that I can sneak up for a day to give you a li'l tour of my fave spots/runs.
Pray for powdah!
Hmmm.... I used slang, and this post seems fairly comprehensible. Just saying...

flatstar? he must have been riding the east ridge all day and didn't realize that it was access to some of the black runs on that side. the rest of the resort isn't flat at all...the only place at northstar that i haven't been to is marty's..and i don't think all the black runs at marty's would be flat either...

JAMM0N: Aside from my beloved Ma, you have got to be the most confusing & illogical person on the face of the Earth! So if I get this straight, y'all had a place rented out in South Lake, yet despite the sage advice from myself & countless others, you rode Northstar? Plus, you had a pre-paid ticket to Kirkwood in your possession? There aren't enough Picard facepalms in cyberspace to express my WTF?-ness.
Btw, Piranha has it right that ya got no business referring to it as "Flatstar." Along w/ the reason he stated, you've got what... less than a dozen or so days in your entire snowsports career under your belt? Like the ESPN's NFL analysts say... C'mon Man!
Sorry so harsh, brah. I'm still on your side and would be happy to help out w/ suggestions & recommendations in an alternate universe & dimension. (Kidding about the last part.) But ya gotta, as The Rock says, KNOW YOUR ROLE!
And FYI: A bunny slope is a beginner area. While it's true that the bottom of N*'s backside mellows out dramatically to get back to the lift, it is by no means a "bunny slope" per se.
P.S. It's spelled "Truckee." |

"flatstar?"...you're obviously enamored with that word, but shouldn't be using it since the majority of N* is as steep or steeper than anything in Wisconsin. When you explore all of N*, then explore several other resorts in tahoe to compare, you might refer to it with a derogatory word |

good luck. i heard there was a storm brewing towards tahoe.
by the way i was in trukee and i haven't had time to update my title in which i will be doing right now. flatstar was okay but then everyone just went the middle of the mountain and went down. not a lot of people went all the way up. during like the afternoon it was busy then it started to die down when it got a lot colder. depends where you go nautika |

there's just too much to do in just 2 days. this year has been hit or miss too due to the snow. but hopefully there's a stronger pull at the end. i got my trip planned the 1st weekend of march.

well i thought we were going a lot of places in tahoe but we ended up making a small trail @ the place we were renting out on the first day.
2nd day was northstar. more like flatstar. a lot of runs open but none of them really groomed. most of it was just hard packed and probably all man made. last run was the challenger. if anyone has been down that run. the first half was fun but the 2nd was killer. too steep for me to make any transitions or turns and a bunny slop @ the end of it. *_* overall it was fun. wish my friends had more money and time to explore :/ oh well. |

that's the most likely scenario. and just check the weather report regarding snow. im sick of people saying there's no snow. just because it hasnt dumped like last year shouldnt stop people from going out there. if you have to ask if there's snow, then there's not enough for you. no offense tlab, im ranting from previous people. |

yes, there is. the storm a week and half ago gave the resorts about 3-4 feet of snow. that opend up bunch of terrain that have been closed due to the lack of natural snow. some resorts, like kirkwood, has all of their runs open. i'd estimate that maybe 75% of the runs in the tahoe area are open. unfortunately, it's all pretty icy by now. another storm is supposed to hit in a couple weeks.

OK, JAMM0N, here's my last li'l bit of helpful input:
Again, keeping in mind that you've mentioned "not wasting time" a few times as well as making the most of your day on the mtn, I suggest riding Sierra on Fri & Sat, then Kirkwood on Sun.
According to this forecast (http://www.snowforecast.com/HeavenlyMountainResort) as well as others, we're in for some serious wind during these storms. Sierra is one of the 3 spots to go to when the winds pick up, so that's already one "plus." Through the Costco deal I mentioned, lift tix are only $80 a pair--i.e. $40 a pop or almost half off. That's another "plus" when compared to Heavenly where the deepest discount I've seen is only $10 off thru SaveMart supermarket--or $80-something a pop.
Finally, get as early a start as you can making y'all way to Kirkwood on Sun. Actually, this should be the case on Fri & Sat for Sierra, too. Luckily, Sun's snowfall will be less than what's supposed to dump on Fri & Sat (and the winds somewhat calmer), but it will take a bit more time to get there than it does for Sierra.
That's all I got. Good luck battling the elements as well as any sense of logic you may possess. And no excuses that your friends wanted to go in a diff. direction.
**EDIT** Here's the info on Costco's Sierra tix... Though it states that the promo ends today, I got an email that said tix will be available (while supplies last) til Jan. 29th.

Jam listen to all of these peeps. They all live in the Tahoe or ride in the Tahoe area so they know what they are talking about. I don't think you realize how far apart north and south tahoe really is or how long of a drive it can be.
If you are all beginners, you won't get tired of the same mountain. Also you could go to N* for their parks, but you have no business being in the park if you don't take the features and all you're going to do is cruise by the features or sit down between the features or chill in the jumpline and none of you are at the ability to take park features. I'm not being mean, but someone could get hurt. Also CLICK ON THE MAP THAT ZAKK POSTED UP! |

I think we're just kinda irked & amazed that the helpful insight we've already offered seems to be falling on deaf ears.
I understand that you're not the trip planner, but you need to let whoever that is know that the only 3 resorts that should be on your radar with a rental cabin in South Lake are: (from closest to furthest) Heavenly, Sierra & Kirkwood. Period.
The only way a North Tahoe resort could factor in is if y'all leave the Bay @5am to ride Sugar Bowl or N* (only because you mentioned them 1st), then head down to check into the cabin after shredding.
Re: your post about wasting time, I'm sure you meant having to wait in line as a bummer. Since NOT wasting time is a priority I'll reiterate that Heavenly, Sierra & Kirkwood are the only resorts you should consider treking to. As I mentioned, the forecast is looking more likely that Tahoe will be getting steady snowfall throughout your entire trip. That means traffic will be slow-going--i.e. taking more time than usual.
Another quick question: is anyone in your group familiar with the Tahoe area?

you should drive up to N* all the time you're down in South Lake. It's worth the $92 ticket, 45 min drive, and gas money. Also you can ride Shaun's pipe. You'll love it.

well thats why i created this thread. to do research in case we run into a hitch and not get stuck going to the same resort for 3 days straight.
and judging by lift tickets in tahoe it was friggin ridicolous. i didn't plan this event my friends did and either way i would like some feedback for the better lack of judgment that you have towards me. this is internet talk i could care less what you say and if it isn't informative why post it? i'm sure we will end up lapping each other cause of how many people are going and scared that we dont even have enough room in our cabin. i know i'm taking one day off togo kirkwood for a bit SOLO or not. |

Isn't that the point of paying the money for a lift ticket? Going up the lift, and riding down? Anyway, I feel like you and your friends have absolutely no idea what you're doing. Sugar Bowl is a farther drive from South Lake than it is to Northstar fyi.

yeah its been a huge drought so far hopefully it picks up when i leave.
down south i will be going bear summit and high if i get all the time to. i dont think anyone has bought lift ticket passes but we will get to it when i'm there i suppose. N* is i guess the most common of places to go but ridiculous amount of money just for 1 day. i better be there for 12 hours! the sad thing is going up the lift and down wastes so much time. i was going to sneak out to go kirkwood solo. not sure whats going on now cause there's too many people. not sure how many people can fit in a cabin. i will take note that if we can go heavenly or sierra lets do it. if not N* sugarbowl and kirkwood. 3 days of fun. we leave early thurs morning and squeeze in a session friday |

JAMM0N: I wanna offer some input to help you & your buds out, but I'm afraid my questions will lead to more confusion.
Luckily, I was able to stay on track w/ you through all those crazy bounces. I got that y'all are set up w/ a cabin in South Lake Tahoe for a few days starting around the 20th or so. Also, from what I peeped of your profile & some of your other posts, I see that you're just starting out. (Nice! Welcome to the family.
Like others have mentioned, why does your group want head to N* each morning when there are much closer options for you? Did they score some N* tix already?
From what others also noted, you should know that the 3 closest are Heavenly, Sierra-at-Tahoe & Kirkwood. "N* is huge" compared to the hills you've been learning on out in WI. These 3 spots compared to N*... Heavenly is twice as big and Sierra & The Wood are only slightly smaller in acreage.
I can kinda understand wanting to hit up N* to see if the parks are as dope as the kudos & props they've been earning over the past few years. But y'all should see plenty of that type of stuff in SoCal, esp. Bear Mtn. And if most of y'all realistically have no business venturing into all those features, I'd say pass on N* and instead enjoy the beginner parks at Sierra & Heavenly. Imho, they are great for starting out, esp. the Progression Park at Sierra!
I also see that you scooped up at least 1 Kirkwood ticket via the google offer. (Killer score!
Not only will you save $$$ by sticking to the slopes closest to So. Lake, but you'll save a ton of time! WHY??? Because our mtn playgrounds are supposed to get dumped on right around the time your trip will be in full swing!
Well, I'll stop here. Can't wait to see where the thought-train has been over the holidays! |

i'm not sure. it was what my friend said.
but i went ahead and bought kirkwood tickets because they were cheap. i will figure out how to get there later but i made a post on FB about the kirkwood tickets for $40 lift ticket for the whole day and only one friend responded. so if my buds ask me where i'm going well i'll tell them i posted a deal on FB i took it now i'm taking the bus there i'll catch up with them later cause i'm not trying to explore the same resort for 3 days and N* is huge. what i'm thinking is kirkwood the first day, heavenly the 2nd, and for our last is northstar. i bet lift tickets if i added it would be well close to $200 dollars for the 3 days (including kirkwood) i dont care if i seperate honestly and go missing for a few hours i will eventually catch up to my friends wherever they are by just taking the bus and meeting them up @ a resort. |

if you would've known where you were going earlier, you coulda gotten tickets a little cheaper several different ways...maybe next time
anyway, from the looks of the topography maps, it looks like even the beginner runs at northstar are about as steep as the black diamonds at cascade (but I've never been to N*, so you can enlighten me when you get back)...but you'll definitely be owning the bunny hill gotta agree with alka, sleeping at stateline and driving all the way over to N* is...not smart |

yeah staying @ south lake i presume and going to northstar for 3 days.
btw. i posted this on facebook but i friggin hate the idea that i have to pay $91 dollars for just that day. season passes are out of the question. i will mostly go greenies and blue's and try one black. thats as far as i will go for this year. i went down blacks and diamonds this weekened and that wasn't fun. the black @ first wasn't so hard being that was my first run. i went off the course LMAO but the blue's and the green's weren't so bad because it wasn't crowded and i was learning how to control my snowboard. but i hope to squeeze in a session or two before i head to california. first is southern california with hana for mt high or bear. then north for n* where i would shit bricks for lift tickets. OH calling all SWAF members. if you could PM me i would like your help to buy my lift tickets. please and thank you. |

^^ Agree with Alka, the drive's like 45 minutes each way from south to north..possibly longer depending on weather/road conditions.
if you're hitting up N* for 3 days, you might as well stay north shore.. Also, if you are landing in Reno Intl Airport, save your boarding pass and head straight out to Squaw Valley..free day pass!

so you're staying in south shore, but going to ride at northstar all three days? rough drive... all the trails are NOT open, but they have the best/most terrain available right now anywhere in Tahoe.
