heavenly is probably the best resort for noobs in Tahoe...I think most all the others are generally steeper/more advanced
(and, if you are that much of a noob, you're probably really going to be out of your league at Mt. Bohemia) |

wow..talk about geographically challenged..i've never heard of south shore utah..but there are ski resorts in south utah..like brian head. assuming you actually mean south shore lake tahoe, you're looking at heavenly as the closest ski resort. depending on where you're sleeping, you could walk out in the morning and get on the gondola. you can also drive west and hit sierra-at-tahoe and southwest to kirkwood. you can head north on the east side of lake tahoe and there's diamond peak and mt. rose. or, you can drive around the west side of the lake and there's homewood, alpine meadows, squaw, and northstar. further northwest of the lake, you'll see sugarbowl, boreal, soda springs, and donner ski ranch.
i would recommend the nevada side of heavenly, sierra, and kirkwood for snowboarding. the rest are either smaller or longer drive.
in southern california, mt. high would be the closest to pasadena unless you want to try mt. baldy (a very small operation there if they're still open). you can also go to big bear and hit summit.
i would recommend just going to mt. high. shorter, easier drive and the snow is just as crappy.
you really need to figure out where you're staying to start asking questions about the location...

if you want a super cheap motel there, just find one of the scummy motels right at stateline...can always get a room super cheap.

my first day ever riding was at heavenly. I busted my ass on "easy street" about 20x before getting the hang of it all (lifts & basic edges). By the end of the day, I was going down "ridge run"...although, whether I should have is debatable. One thing is for sure: ass pads should be required for beginners, cause damn I was bruised

Sugarbowl has had this "general admission" deal for a couple seasons now, where you pay the regular lift tix price and they give you rental & lesson for free! I think Diamond Peak is trying to do this too this season, but I'm not positive.

Taking lessons help to get the basics down..but it really comes down to actual trial and error and falling a whole bunch before you're any good. So, I do recommend pads, but just some butt pads if you usually fall backwards. knee pads and wrist quards if you fall forward. Helmets should be worn by everyone, not just beginners. spine protector? what?

General Admission is usually only on non-holiday weekdays unless it's early season or late season. It's a good deal for people who are starting out and can get there on weekdays.

are you looking for just 1 ticket? theres a deal for buying a pack of tickets where you can go your choice of mtns. but the max you can go to each mtn is like 2-3 times. I think its the epic pass.

coming from a skateboarding background, falling forward was instinctual...but it took a while to develop the instinct to instantly pick a bun to land on when falling backward (and that instinct didn't happen in one day...or two...or three). Almost every time, I would land on some part of my pelvic bone
.ass pads are a definite (even after riding 6 years...never know when there's gonna be a big branch or rock under the pow), but all that other stuff I don't usually use. An early/good nights sleep does wonders for me after a hardcore shred day...so bring earplugs. |

i think as of last weekend, they opened the backside where some good black and blue grooms runs are. but, since you're still falling all over the place, it doesn't really matter that all the trails are open. you just need 1 green run, which has been open since november. don't know any current deals..but REI might have some slightly discounted tickets.

so you're staying in south shore, but going to ride at northstar all three days? rough drive... all the trails are NOT open, but they have the best/most terrain available right now anywhere in Tahoe.

^^ Agree with Alka, the drive's like 45 minutes each way from south to north..possibly longer depending on weather/road conditions.
if you're hitting up N* for 3 days, you might as well stay north shore.. Also, if you are landing in Reno Intl Airport, save your boarding pass and head straight out to Squaw Valley..free day pass!

yeah staying @ south lake i presume and going to northstar for 3 days.
btw. i posted this on facebook but i friggin hate the idea that i have to pay $91 dollars for just that day. season passes are out of the question. i will mostly go greenies and blue's and try one black. thats as far as i will go for this year. i went down blacks and diamonds this weekened and that wasn't fun. the black @ first wasn't so hard being that was my first run. i went off the course LMAO but the blue's and the green's weren't so bad because it wasn't crowded and i was learning how to control my snowboard. but i hope to squeeze in a session or two before i head to california. first is southern california with hana for mt high or bear. then north for n* where i would shit bricks for lift tickets. OH calling all SWAF members. if you could PM me i would like your help to buy my lift tickets. please and thank you. |

if you would've known where you were going earlier, you coulda gotten tickets a little cheaper several different ways...maybe next time
anyway, from the looks of the topography maps, it looks like even the beginner runs at northstar are about as steep as the black diamonds at cascade (but I've never been to N*, so you can enlighten me when you get back)...but you'll definitely be owning the bunny hill gotta agree with alka, sleeping at stateline and driving all the way over to N* is...not smart |

i'm not sure. it was what my friend said.
but i went ahead and bought kirkwood tickets because they were cheap. i will figure out how to get there later but i made a post on FB about the kirkwood tickets for $40 lift ticket for the whole day and only one friend responded. so if my buds ask me where i'm going well i'll tell them i posted a deal on FB i took it now i'm taking the bus there i'll catch up with them later cause i'm not trying to explore the same resort for 3 days and N* is huge. what i'm thinking is kirkwood the first day, heavenly the 2nd, and for our last is northstar. i bet lift tickets if i added it would be well close to $200 dollars for the 3 days (including kirkwood) i dont care if i seperate honestly and go missing for a few hours i will eventually catch up to my friends wherever they are by just taking the bus and meeting them up @ a resort. |

JAMM0N: I wanna offer some input to help you & your buds out, but I'm afraid my questions will lead to more confusion.
Luckily, I was able to stay on track w/ you through all those crazy bounces. I got that y'all are set up w/ a cabin in South Lake Tahoe for a few days starting around the 20th or so. Also, from what I peeped of your profile & some of your other posts, I see that you're just starting out. (Nice! Welcome to the family.
Like others have mentioned, why does your group want head to N* each morning when there are much closer options for you? Did they score some N* tix already?
From what others also noted, you should know that the 3 closest are Heavenly, Sierra-at-Tahoe & Kirkwood. "N* is huge" compared to the hills you've been learning on out in WI. These 3 spots compared to N*... Heavenly is twice as big and Sierra & The Wood are only slightly smaller in acreage.
I can kinda understand wanting to hit up N* to see if the parks are as dope as the kudos & props they've been earning over the past few years. But y'all should see plenty of that type of stuff in SoCal, esp. Bear Mtn. And if most of y'all realistically have no business venturing into all those features, I'd say pass on N* and instead enjoy the beginner parks at Sierra & Heavenly. Imho, they are great for starting out, esp. the Progression Park at Sierra!
I also see that you scooped up at least 1 Kirkwood ticket via the google offer. (Killer score!
Not only will you save $$$ by sticking to the slopes closest to So. Lake, but you'll save a ton of time! WHY??? Because our mtn playgrounds are supposed to get dumped on right around the time your trip will be in full swing!
Well, I'll stop here. Can't wait to see where the thought-train has been over the holidays! |

yeah its been a huge drought so far hopefully it picks up when i leave.
down south i will be going bear summit and high if i get all the time to. i dont think anyone has bought lift ticket passes but we will get to it when i'm there i suppose. N* is i guess the most common of places to go but ridiculous amount of money just for 1 day. i better be there for 12 hours! the sad thing is going up the lift and down wastes so much time. i was going to sneak out to go kirkwood solo. not sure whats going on now cause there's too many people. not sure how many people can fit in a cabin. i will take note that if we can go heavenly or sierra lets do it. if not N* sugarbowl and kirkwood. 3 days of fun. we leave early thurs morning and squeeze in a session friday |

Isn't that the point of paying the money for a lift ticket? Going up the lift, and riding down? Anyway, I feel like you and your friends have absolutely no idea what you're doing. Sugar Bowl is a farther drive from South Lake than it is to Northstar fyi.

well thats why i created this thread. to do research in case we run into a hitch and not get stuck going to the same resort for 3 days straight.
and judging by lift tickets in tahoe it was friggin ridicolous. i didn't plan this event my friends did and either way i would like some feedback for the better lack of judgment that you have towards me. this is internet talk i could care less what you say and if it isn't informative why post it? i'm sure we will end up lapping each other cause of how many people are going and scared that we dont even have enough room in our cabin. i know i'm taking one day off togo kirkwood for a bit SOLO or not. |

you should drive up to N* all the time you're down in South Lake. It's worth the $92 ticket, 45 min drive, and gas money. Also you can ride Shaun's pipe. You'll love it.

I think we're just kinda irked & amazed that the helpful insight we've already offered seems to be falling on deaf ears.
I understand that you're not the trip planner, but you need to let whoever that is know that the only 3 resorts that should be on your radar with a rental cabin in South Lake are: (from closest to furthest) Heavenly, Sierra & Kirkwood. Period.
The only way a North Tahoe resort could factor in is if y'all leave the Bay @5am to ride Sugar Bowl or N* (only because you mentioned them 1st), then head down to check into the cabin after shredding.
Re: your post about wasting time, I'm sure you meant having to wait in line as a bummer. Since NOT wasting time is a priority I'll reiterate that Heavenly, Sierra & Kirkwood are the only resorts you should consider treking to. As I mentioned, the forecast is looking more likely that Tahoe will be getting steady snowfall throughout your entire trip. That means traffic will be slow-going--i.e. taking more time than usual.
Another quick question: is anyone in your group familiar with the Tahoe area?

Jam listen to all of these peeps. They all live in the Tahoe or ride in the Tahoe area so they know what they are talking about. I don't think you realize how far apart north and south tahoe really is or how long of a drive it can be.
If you are all beginners, you won't get tired of the same mountain. Also you could go to N* for their parks, but you have no business being in the park if you don't take the features and all you're going to do is cruise by the features or sit down between the features or chill in the jumpline and none of you are at the ability to take park features. I'm not being mean, but someone could get hurt. Also CLICK ON THE MAP THAT ZAKK POSTED UP! |
