Hey guys.
I'll be in San Fran in a few weeks time and going to Lake Tahoe for a few days of boarding. I've heard South Tahoe isn't very good atm, so I'm thinking about going to North Star. Has anyone been up to Tahoe yet? What are the conditions like? Cheers. |

none of the tahoe resorts, north or south, are very good at the moment. it's been a terrible winter so far. in fact, temps in tahoe were higher than they were in the bay area!

what time is the snow usually arrives? )) I know this is stupid question, but maybe someone has a theory or something ))
I have to plan my vacation and I'm flying from east cost. I don't need that artificial snow that I can get it here, just around the corner. Last year we were there at the middle of Feb. It was so much powder! It was so amazing. |

it doesn't really matter where u go in Tahoe, the westside doesn't have good snow right now. The east side had a blizzard, just hoping it'll come our way soon!

last year was an anomaly. if you would have been here any day in January, you would be greeted with massive inversion and 65* days on the mountain. |

yeah, nov last year had 2 big dumps and dec had like 4 epic dumps, but all of jan was completely dry as it is now. Wasn't until mid feb we got another dump...then it kept freight-training dumps up until mid april
however, if this year is like 2007 and 08, the dumps will be smaller, fewer and farther between...mostly only locals will get anything good. I was in heavenly one of those 2 years and it was disturbingly patchy at about 75% up the mtn, even in march. It happens. |

been to N* two times already. the first was before x-mas and conditions were cold enough so the manmade snow was decent. but its been warm and the last time I went which was this week, condition was like spring... got icy and slushy towards the end. but N* is still the best in tahoe right now with most rideable terrain. Sierra only have 4 runs... crappy runs. Boreal is open top to bottom, but its mainly park. haven't been to heavenly yet, dunno if cali and nv side is connected yet.

We should see some snow starting mid jan in tahoe.
But the big storms aren't expected to hit until lat jan early feb.

Storm door should be wobbling open starting early next week. There are a few questions on the Euro vs. NWS models, but let's hope.

I was up at Northstar yesterday... conditions are not great, but based on it not snowing for 2 months, it wasn't bad.
If you had to choose somewhere in Tahoe, I'd go with Northstar or Boreal. Northstar has more terrain open, and supposedly Boreal has the best conditioned "snow" (because they supposedly have an unlimited water supply and can run the snow machines 24/7). I haven't been to Boreal in a long time but it's worth a shot (and close to northstar as well if you're staying nearby). |

Yup... Tahoe Weather Guru's post a couple days ago has precip rolling in by Thurs the 19th. I don't bank too much when the forecasts are 10+ days in advance. I wait til it's 3 or 4 days out when the computer models have a much greater probability.
Keep y'all fingers crossed! In the meantime, have a BBQ & wash your cars to help persuade Mother Nature & Ol' Man Winter to let La Niña come out & play!

northstar was dead this weekend. hard pack snow but no lines. i'd gladly take that over the monstrous lines normally there.

well, it snowed today in tahoe. but not an epic dump of fresh pow or anything... and this will do little good if your trip is in a couple of weeks. i have season tickets to sierra-at-tahoe and it is kinda depressing there. they have a little bit of snow but for the most part i think they have 3 or 4 runs open? not very good.
from what i hear, kirkwood is pretty good relative to the rest of tahoe. i havent been there since the start of the season prior to all these snow showers... so i cant speak on kirkwood myself. i think costco still sells the kirkwood passes. hopefully there is a little snow fall right before you decide to go. but like others have said, there is no problems with lines. i usually go on wednesdays or thursday since those are my days off and i can do run after run after run without waiting longer than a mintue in line. kinda nice. |

Kirkwood has all runs open, but coverage is not the best or even good. I'd say you have to be careful too w/ icy patches all over and the changes of the terrain due to lack of coverage. Backside definitely needs a lot more snow. The upper part is ok, but the lower part needs several more feet of coverage, otherwise, it just feels like it's still early December conditions or late spring.

Northstar was pretty empty yesterday, especially the backside. it felt like i had the entire place to myself for parts of the day. conditions weren't so bad, some icy spots here and there, but still some snow left from the dusting earlier this week. My usual runs were open: burnout, promised land, ax handle, etc. a storm is supposed to come this weekend. hope it's a good dump...

got back from kirkwood a few days ago...my goodness, they really need some coverage there. conditions seem to be much more consistent at northstar, but with the snow in the forecast, things might be evening up soon.

i'm at kirkwood right now. coverage is good with the recent 4ft+. another storm hits tuesday. I think squaw got 5ft last week from the same set of storms. Any tahoe resort should be good next weekend. use www.tahoeweatherdiscussion.com to track the weather before you head up.

tahoeweatherdiscussion is an excellent site. another thing to keep in mind this late in the season is the weather temps. if it's a warm weekend, expect slush late in the day and possibly icy conditions in the morning.

I'll never understand why people "hope" for storms so close to their trips. there are weather patterns, especially a week out. for a fact there will be a >6" of snow for most of tahoe by Wednesday morning. then:
Then we have another break Wed-Fri with temperatures rebounding back into the 40s. What is interesting is an area of low pressure that is splitting off from the storm coming across the Pacific for Tuesday. That low spins North of Hawaii as the ridge slides over it and off our coast for the Wed-Fri time frame. Then the low heads North and joins with the next storm moving across the Pacific that will impact the Pacific NW next Saturday. Right now it looks like the departing high pressure will keep most of the precip next weekend to our North with the moisture associated with the trailing front falling apart. It may act as the fullback clearing the way for the next storm next Tuesday as a long-wave trough sets up off the coast. Just about all of the forecast models show the upstream ridge setting up out around 160-170w Northwest of Hawaii allowing a couple of bigger storm to come into CA next week. Even though this is still a week a way it has been showing up consistently the past few days. |

there's supposed to be a storm tomorrow and cold on wednesday. then it'll warm up after that. if the warming trend continues, i'd expect spring-like conditions this weekend.

yea, thats exactly what it was like this morning at kirkwood. It was chilly due to wind but, full sun at 57degrees turned what little snow they had into slush. there LOTS of bare spots on the trails so coverage is an issue until the next storm comes.

If "springy" means slushy, then yeah it was definitely springy. I rode Alpine Saturday and Homewood Sunday and by lunchtime it was getting slow and heavy, especially lower on the mountain.
Killer views of the lake on a beautiful bluebird day though...

Rode Squaw for a bit today (mainly park), weather was super warm. Snow was holding up well considering but don't think it'll be decent for much longer unless we get fresh. Supposed to get a bit tonight/tomorrow so we'll see

Saturday at Heavenly was awesome... especially Mott Canyon (first time open this year!)
Sunday at Northstar... it was like boarding through mud... definitely "springy" conditions =X Looks like it's going to be in the 50's this weekend so all of today's snow is going to be gone

For some reason, it didn't feel like there were any fresh snow yesterday at Northstar. The report said they got 8in of new snow but most of the mountain was icy corn. It shouldn't have warmed up enough in the morning for that to happen...i dunno...
