Can't wait. This will be my third time this week riding. Last Saturday was at Heavenly, Wednesday at Homewood, and now tomorrow at Mt. Rose. Definitely getting my runs in this season so far. First time at Mt. Rose and from looking at the trail maps, seems like there's a lot of nice long trails and more of a resort for intermediate/advanced boarders. What are you guy's experience at Mt Rose?

If you're expecting nice long trails, you'll be dissapointed. Check out the elevation at the top and bottom, and you'll notice it's not that much of a difference. However, this does afford you the opportunity to get hot laps, since the high-speed lifts to the top really don't take long at all. You can have a fun day for sure, but without a foot of fresh snow or the Chutes open, Mt Rose really loses its appeal to me. If you ride park at all, you may find some decent park lines but it will be really short, as they leave most of the resort open to groomers. Still, it will be nice weather, and Mt Rose is cheaper than a lot of others, so hey, focus on those two things and you'll be set!

I've only ridden mt Rose 2 days.
The first day was early jan a few years ago and it was disturbingly bare on most of the mt. There was actually gravel poking out of the runs near the base lodge which messed up my brand new board's base pretty good. Fortunately, "slide bowl" was open, so I got to ride that side of the mtn, too. The wind was howling near the top, so wear plenty of layers...or you may freeze. I had a blast anyway, considering it was a new mtn/adventure for me and the trail layout isn't bad for such a small resort....and you are right, there is a very few ratio of "beginner" runs here. Their main lifts are the fastest I've ever been on. The second time was mid feb a couple years ago and I got super lucky and scored a 2-3 ft powder day right on the button. I got to ride the "Chutes" at their untracked peak and it was the best, steepest and deepest terrain I had ever ridden up until that point (I've since ridden Squaw...). Nice little glades even without the chutes. Pissed me off they didn't have "Wild Card" (backside) open on the best day of the year...but I guess I was being greedy. This time I had a Camelbak on me and it froze solid within the first hr...I had to ride with that block of ice on my back the whole day! (if you use a water pack, only fill it as much as you're gonna drink, wear it inside your jacket and maybe get a hand warmer packet to help keep the hose flowing). They don't call it "mt. blows" because it sucks (it doesn't), they call it that because the peak frequently gets so windy and cold. |
