http://business.transworld.net/101397/features/june-mountain-closed-indefinitely/
http://www.junemountain.com/ "Mammoth Mountain-owned June Mountain is being closed “indefinitely,” according to a company source, while it assesses the profitability of the mountain, which has operated at a deficit for the last several seasons. Mammoth was hit hard by this winter’s meager snowfalls and has been implementing aggressive cost cutting measure since early this year." June mountain was a great place. I am a sad panda. |

Sad panda too. I wonder if they are going to sell June or just close it indefinitely. I was reading the forums over at Mammoth and they're saying that June hasn't pulled a profit in the last 26 yrs and Mammoth probably doesn't want to sell it because then they would have competition in the area which they never had.
It would be sad if they just let the resort go and never reopen it again. |

Wow that's really surprising. I knew they weren't doing great but I had no idea it was bad enough for them to close it down. And I was planning to buy a season pass this coming season.

Well June never once made Mammoth money... it's been running a deficit since the purchased it.
I can understand it after a season like last years... |

I just woke up to this. I've never gotten to go to June, but I've heard good things. Always a bummer to lose some good slopes.

I would have thought it was obvious that June mountain would not succeed as another ski resort since it is only like 20 mins from mammoth. What did June offer that mammoth didn't (besides less people).
The location was pretty terrible... anyone coming from the south would hit mammoth first and anyone coming from the north would probably rather go to tahoe or just drive the extra 20mins to get to mammoth since it was much bigger

Everytime we go to mammoth for a week, we always make sure to go to June. I like June, It's fun and relaxed atmosphere I will miss a lot. And when it's pow, I actually like June better than Mammoth. :(

I loved the fact that when Mammoth was closed down to wind, June usually was opened.
Well.... as I said earlier, a great touring location now! |

As long as they're not leasing it from the forest service... it should be public.

Any chance they'll let you "rent the mountain" for a 1-day to 2-day period for corporate events? You pay them to run the lifts and for the usage of their property, then you and your co-workers get to shred the whole day. I'd still recommend using your backcountry gear though, because there won't be any ski patrol to save your a$$.

Doubtful man, but interesting nonetheless.
Witty are you into bc riding? If so we should hook up for a tour. You're on skis, right, or am I mistaken.

EDIT: uuuggghhh, not sure where I got that intel about you being a skiier witty, it certainly wasn't from those rad pics of you shredding on your profile. It's been a long summer, apparently

How sad! I didn't even get to try out June yet!
Last year was horrible though, even Mammoth had to let go like 60 employees.

No... You'd be right. I'm mostly a skier... I'm definitely alot better at it than riding. I just got myself a new touring setup as well! New 2013 sticks that aren't out yet! I'm down to hook up for a tour! |

I am saddened by this, since June was one of the few CA resorts I haven't been to yet. I don't think I remember a ski resort shutting down since Echo Summit when I was a little kid.

That would be awesome to have the whole mountain for the weekend. But they could never allow it. Ski/Snowboard resorts have to have a huge insurance policy because of accidents and deaths. Which of course means protecting the owners from lawsuits. And even if everyone signed a waiver that still doesnt guarantee protection from lawsuits.

I don't see why they can't rent the whole mountain if they allow you to rent a part of the mountain so why not the whole mountain?

I think you'll be able to find those opinions probably on the mammoth forums http://forums.mammothmountain.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13693 maybe they'll do private cat tours there or use it as a perk for black pass holders? Still I wouldn't rule out that if they have a really good season, they may reopen it during the season and be like...hey! we're so awesome because we reopened this mountain for you. Or they're trying to push the locals out of June Lake and buy up the land around there and develop it. Either way, I see why June failed. Mammoth never gave it a chance...no upgrades, no advertisements and according to that forum, June hasn't been pulling in a profit for 26 yrs so they're using this bad snow season to justify closing it for good. |

Well now that its closed Im sure the insurance on the mountain has been canceled. I dont think the people who own the mountain are even allowed to let people use the slopes even if they wanted to because of regulations/laws. And like I said before, they would be open to lawsuits without insurance. |

It's leased from the forest service. If they're not leasing it... theres no possibility of holding an organized event there. But everyone (general public) does have access to public land. So you can go up there with a few buddies. just can't use the facilities. |

It says they breached their contract to upgrade the airport because then they would be breaching the Air Traffic law or whatevers standards.

As part of the bankruptcy, all the Mammoth Lakes councilmembers ought to be removed and prohibited from running for office again. Don't sign contracts, change your mind and breach them!

"real" snow?? I know Mammoth doesn't get the really fine fluffy stuff... but come on... They get storms that dump over 10ft at a time... I'd say they get alot of real snow.
