Board selection help!

First up, if youre planning on going into more complex terrain a few things immediately.

I know people are going to say you can ride anything anywhere, and its true. But it assumes your skill level. The people who can ride any board anywhere are either riding really badly but dont care, or have extremely high skill level and control.

You can take an artifact down a black diamond and have no problems. But youre probably pretty solid. For your average rider you will be washing, you will be having problems dealing with being thrown about by the terrain and you will feel extremely uncomfortable trusting the board at any real speed. You can still do it, but for most people its not going to be within the boards (and by association) your comfort zone. 

This shouldnt be a deal breaker. We all adapt to our boards and we all adapt to the conditions on our boards. Its not like the board snaps like a twig or it simply refuses to ride down that diamond. But maybe you might feel a little more reluctance to head that way in future, or maybe you dont quite open the throttle as much as youd like. It not that it CANT be done, its just that its not going to be as fun doing it as you might find on another board. Then again, maybe instead of just charging the diamond you decide to spend your time using the bumps and side hits instead and take long lines across the face of the mountain instead of bombing it. 

As i say, we all find a way to adapt to the conditions and you can ride literally any board anywhere. Its not a deal breaker. Just dont fall under the impression that youre going to be just as comfortable bombing black runs as you might be on a stiffer board with solid edge hold and dampening. Its just not going to happen. The decks you listed, all of them, are built for cruising and buttering. That means lifted contacts, soft flex, likely some kind of detuning (or youll do it yourself if you become a railrat), less surface area, shorter effective edge and no real dampening. Instead of smashing through choppy conditions youll get bounced by it as the board will naturally ride over the bumps thanks to the nose being reverse camber. Its just one of the effects, great for pow, shit for chop. 

And these effects mean that at speed youre going to break your line on most decent bobbles that you might just blast through on a board thats built for those conditions. Instead youll get bounced, hit another bobble, lose a bit of your line, get bounced again, and voila, the board will slide out on you because your edge hasnt really locked back in. So to counter this youre going to require pretty good balance and a decent ability to read those lines and pre-empt those bumps to keep yourself on your line and in control. 

These are skills you will learn as you ride more in those conditions of course, but this brings up the next question: will you bother? We tend to gravitate to the things we find fun and avoid the stuff we find challenging. So why bother learning how to deal with crud and shitty terrain when you could be having fun doing what the board is meant to be doing, buttering, mucking about on jibs, lapping the park and cruising. Since success is going to come easy in those areas, you might gravitate to them and maybe spend less time on the "difficult bits" of the mountain.

Its not an issue in the grand cosmic scheme of things. You can neglect what you like, you can enjoy what you like and you will find that the board and you can be happy as pigs in **** all day just cruising about. You might even enjoy the challenge of taking it down double blacks and seeing if you can conquer them on your artifact or whatever you end up picking up. But just know that boards are made different at the end of the day for a reason. They have strengths and they do have weaknesses. You can adapt to their weaknesses fine and where you dont adapt no ones exactly forcing you to ride the whole mountain. I hate mogul fields. I dont feel a burning need to be able to ride them. Its something i deal with if i have to, but otherwise i avoid them. It makes me a worse all round snowboarder, but its not like im training for the olympics here...  

So the upshot of this massive post is really this. If you want a board to butter around and cruise the flats then sure, theyll all do it. But if youre trying to find a board that does all that and ALSO lets you cruises diamonds, then youre going to have to acknowledge that the board has limitations that you will have to overcome (and it takes time and effort), or youll have to find a board that balances the two features you want. 

If you want more stability, maybe then drop the reverse camber and head to something flatline? Seems like youll get a bit more pop and a bit of a longer edge? Could be an alternative without too much sacrifice. If however youre after the softest butteriest board then stick with what youve listed (with the crush or even the kink maybe replacing the machete).
