ran into this recently and started wondering if there's a performance benefit or horrible decrease if someone went ahead to do this with their SNOWBOARD...anyone have any comments? it seems like an insanely good way to save cash...

it's really not too difficult of a task, and you can do it yourself.. you just have to have the right tools, basic skills, time, and patience. a board will tend to come out slightly softer than when it was a solid piece, but it doesn't change it drastically or anything. I got my good friend a capita charlie to split, brand new, and it came out amazing. he had the help of a carpenter friend, but the skills required are nothing extraordinary. the kits from voile make it easy.
if you are really confident, split any board. if you aren't totally sure, try an old board you don't necessarily care too much about, or find something at a thrift store to practice with. or if you just want it done for you, $100 is a good deal to have it done professionally if you ask me. also... splitboarding is awesome. you can get to amazing places like this, from our last trip : ) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Splitboarding is the sheez! I don't feel comfortable enough with my tech skills to have actually split any of my old boards, but I did some tinkering on an old s-series deck to add karaoram clips, move the tip/tail clips and generally tighten that baby up all the way down the line, which made it a much better board after I had a couple years on it. Turned out real good ![]() -b EDIT: I also follow these guys on fb and they do damn fine work, if you have something nice you want a professional to set up |

it physically hurts me to watch him cut the board in half. almost like watching people getting kicked in the nuts. i would be freaking out doing that to a brand new board. i guess confidence is key.

watching the drilling is like a saw movie. No no no dont do it then screaming is all you hear. he is all like "you could measure it. i like to wing it" the board is just screaming. but i would like to get into that stuff. i should do it to my board with a cracked topsheet. dont use it anymore. might as well

I took them, haha. the group of people in the last photo is not us, just a separate bunch of skiers. yes I took those on my powershot. the beauty of nature does most of the work!

Interesting idea. Since the bindings are so different than cross-country skis, can you really treat it like skis comfortably? Really like the photos Spenser!

spenser, those pics are amazing! (what settings did you use!?) man, now i'm even MORE tempted to get sports basement to do it for me...
regardless, anyone have any idea if your board takes a performance hit or is it pretty much the same?

F5.0, 1/160, iso 100 on the one of the ridge overlooking the ocean, and f4.0, 1/500, iso 100 on the black and white one. the fisheye one in the little meadow was on my gopro.
