So my friends and I are trying to decide which to go to, Sierra or Northstar, and was wondering if you guys can add some more stuff for us to consider in our decisions. So far we've got:
Sierra Pros: closer to us (from Berkeley), less gas $$$, less driving time Cons: $54 (compared to Northstar - $44 with Safeway lift ticket) Northstar Pros: my friends think that Northstar > Sierra, cheaper lift ticket Cons: further away, Vans Cup hosted there this weekend I'm guessing that the Vans Cup will have Northstar packed, which is why I kind of prefer Sierra. Any input? Oh, and how're the conditions looking for this weekend? Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, didn't know if this should go in the meet-up forum...but since I'm not really meeting up with anyone, I thought it could go there. Input appreciated! |

Sierra is a bit smaller, but has some better terrain in my opinion. It's generally a bit steeper then northstar (aka flatstar). You can head over to lookout mtn at northstar which is pretty decent, and generally isn't too crowded.
For this weekend, i would suggest sierra. As you mentioned - with the contest going on, it's going to be nutso. Burton is also doing an on-snow demo, so that's going to add to the crowds as well. Sierra might be a little more crowded then usual - as anyone with a double-whammy pass that doesn't want to deal with northstar today will be there as well - but I think overall Sierra is going to be a bit more enjoyable.

What the hell?! I don't even look at trail maps because I thought I knew the mountain. I just took a look at the online trail map and found out there's a whole area of blacks I've never been on!!! I always thought look-out mountain was serviced by the Vista Express (to the right of the park), mt. pluto was arrowhead express and comstock frontside. How are these blacks? In general I find Northstar to be too easy (some decent terrain and nice hidden spots, but just too easy), but some new terrain would be great. It looks like it'd be way less crowded (almost all black diamond and out of the way). Damn, I need to hit that next time I'm there. |

They're wayyyy steeper then the rest of the mountain. Very nice.
It's definately a lot less crowded. The only way to get over there (without hiking for 20 minutes) is to take the Tahoe Vista Express lift - and stay to the left. You'll see the signs for lookout mountain.
When you follow the signs - you'll come to the "lookout link" tow rope. Kinda just pulls you over to there.
When you get off the rope - you'll be on the "martis" run. Just take that to the bottom, and there's a lift.
It's pretty nice over there. It's overall steeper then the rest of the mountain. There's spots on other trails that are steeper - but these are consistantly moreso.
Only problem is, on really deep days - it doesn't always open on time. When I was there during the last series of storms - they were talking about lookout opening 3 hours late that day.

Also - there's areas of gladed trees that are REALLY nice.
Some of the completely natural trees are a bit thick to ride in, but the gladed areas are pretty nice.
The terrain is generally less manicured over there - so it's not uncommon to find drops, trees, big rocks, pillows, etc.

You mean the Tahoe Zephyr Express? The Vista Express is the park lift on the other side of the mountain.

Oh yea, I realized I never addressed the original topic... I personally like Sierra's terrain, but I have yet to find a black that isn't littered with moguls. So I'd say Northstar.
